Due to finances I may be forced to sell my PRS CE24.

To replace it, I'm thinking of building a replica of one of these 2 Strats that Alex used. I already have a replica of Alex's white Hentor Strat and I can build close replicas of either of these.

Pick your favorite.

Which ever one sounds better is the right answer. I couldn't care less if it were Big Bird Yellow with cigarette burns all over it. As long as it has the tone!

It's impossible to know which would sound better though cause I'm gonna build them from parts.

Either will have the same neck, bridge, wiring, and pickups so the main difference will be color and cosmetics.

How much for the PRS?

I've been watching ebay and early models like mine have been going for around $1400.

It's a 1994 alder body/maple top in near mint condition. The thing resonates like a violin.

What pups did he use in that one? And where did you get the pickguard?

Bridge pickup is the same Bill Lawrence L500 he used in the others. The red & white guitars had a cream color pickup and the black guitar had a black one with a black mounting ring. The single coils were stock 70's Fenders with black covers on the red & black guitars, white covers on the white one.

I'm gonna get another L500 just like I have in the white one for this guitar. I have some great sounding black single coils from a PRS SE EG that I'm gonna use in it too.

The pickup switch will be from a 3 pickup Les Paul Custom so I can use all 3 pickups with the one toggle.

The pickguard I'll get from here but it's going to take about 3 weeks to get it:

http://www.pickguardheaven.com/

I'm going to cannibalize a Floyd Rose Fender Strat I have for the other parts.

The only detail that won't be correct is that this guitar won't have a matching red headstock like Lifeson's did.

I love building these things.

Alex should commission me to build the whole set for him!

Hentor is a name Alex made up. All three of his Strats were normal late '70's Fenders.

He changed the necks, pickups, bridge, pickguards, and switches on them. He actually started the Floyd Rose super-strat thing before anyone else.

Hentor was a nickname for their producer on the GUP album, Peter Henderson.

I got all the parts ordered for the new Distant Early Warning Strat on Saturday. I even found a pickguard that was in stock. I should have it all done by the first of next week.

Here's a mockup of how it'll look.

I just studied all the pics and videos I could find and researched old interviews in Guitar Player magazine.

The necks were made by a Candian company named "Shark" but they are no longer in business. I've never seen one of their necks come up for sale but I'm always looking.

All done!!

This was a lot of work routing for the switch, routing the recess for the Floyd Rose, and routing out the pickguard. The pickguard was only cut for a single humbucker, I had to rout the single coil holes.

OOAAAGHHHH!!!!! Droool drool1.gif

anyway i had a discussion with some friends about how powerfull the Bill lawrence sound is, Dimebag Darrel also using one too, right into an amp head.I suppose this pickup does cover wide range of tones well.

i think it`s gotta be my new G.A.S alongside a BOSS CE-5 unit

i`ve been wondering what`s the sound differrence between the double/single bladed pickups and those with poles?

Dime used the L500XL which is a very powerful pickup. Alex used the L500 which is less powerful but has a really nice tone to it.

I got both of mine on ebay. There's a store in Florida that has a limited stock of L500's from the 1970's and they're the same ones Alex used. The sound of them just nails Alex's tone.

The red guitar's body is made by WD Music and the neck is from my Japanese Strat. I'm going to eventually get another neck for the red one so I can put my MIJ Strat back together. I'd like to find a neck just like this one though.

if i have limited budget, that i have to choose, which one should i get?

i think i would need one that can cover heavy, yet still have sweet character when i need it. is the XL can still be great for playing rush?

I personally haven't used the L500XL ( I have an aversion to very high output pickups, lower output gets better tone for me).

The L500 can get very heavy sounding but can also do warm and clean. It really depends more on the amp.

I'm considering selling this one but I don't know what to ask for it.

It plays and sounds great but it's a little redundant since I have the white Hentor. I recently bought a black PRS CE24 and it fills the spot that this guitar did.

Anybody want to make an offer?

Here's the full specs:

Body- Alder, made by WD Music

Neck- Fender, made in Japan, 21 fret, headstock is color matched to the body

Pickups- Bill Lawrence L500, 2 PRS single coils

Controls- One volume, one tone, Gibson 3 way toggle (bridge/bridge+middle/neck)

Bridge- Original Floyd Rose with locking nut

Pickguard- mirrored

Tuners- Generic chrome sealed tuners

Case- Fender molded hardshell
