  1. (I feel like this may be a stupid question...) I was showing my father how the Soundhound app on the iPhone works, and can even recognize songs if you hum or sing them. Since we are both Rush fans, I sung the beginning of Tom Sawyer, which the app recognized and returned as one of the results. However, neither of us recognized the preview that Soundhound provided. Here's the link: http://www.soundhound.com/?t=1bbedc36fe9be3f8eaf29f8c50f306b6 Anyone know which version this is??
  2. Anyone planning on picking up Weightless on Tuesday? I just discovered AAL and I will definitely be spending many hours listening to it...
  3. They'll take a year to get back into the studio, find they've lost half the tracks they've recorded, pump out a couple more songs and release it with 6 tracks, coming in at just over half an hour. Then they'll call it quits.
  4. I'm not too worried about there not being growls. I enjoy them but Damnation is one of my favorite albums. I'm excited to hear the new stuff.
  5. I'll admit I haven't really been keeping up on Rush news for a while. But now that the tour is over, I still haven't heard a word on anything Clockwork Angels related. I assume it's still coming out?
  6. QUOTE (King Whompus @ Jul 24 2011, 12:26 PM) QUOTE (reani14 @ Jul 24 2011, 01:36 PM) now people, Amy wine house was in shape. need i say more! But Neil's blood type isn't cocaine.
  7. QUOTE (Earthshine @ Jul 16 2011, 05:47 AM) QUOTE (FallTempest @ Jul 15 2011, 01:15 PM) QUOTE (Earthshine @ Jul 15 2011, 06:03 AM) Overrated and immature band. *IMO you mean. Immature? Help us out here. I have a hunch that maybe you haven't got your facts straight. And overrated where?? Not on TRF thats for sure. I think they get as much or perhaps not enough recognition IMO. Well, they just sound like they try to make their music as complicated as possible. The whole drama with Portnoy showed immaturity also. Kids really. They can't play much more than what they play. That, and covering other bands. I doubt any of them can play classical or jazz with the exception of Rudess. I doubt Portnoy could play Rite Of Spring on timpani or Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra on snare drum or timpani for example. Or read a Basie or Ellington chart arrangement. I don't think Myung could play Cherokee or Four. I doubt Patrucci could play McLaughlin's Guitar Concerto for Orchestra or solo over rhythm changes modulating into different keys using chord scales. They really need to go back to school or go and take lessons. Them's are different strings, man.
  8. Love the cover, love the song, love the video! The Hunter may be the album I'm looking the most forward to this year up there with Heritage.
  9. If their new album is anything like BC&SL I would have to jump on the "getting sick of dream theater" train too. Not only do I hate the cover art for both albums but BC&SL just didn't do anything for me, outside of maybe the shattered fortress. But I will have to disagree with those who say ToT isn't any good...Stream of Consciousness is actually the first DT song I ever heard and still one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. The whole album is fun to listen to in my opinion but I'm more of a metal fan anyways so I can understand how a lot of people wouldn't like it.
  10. It's good. It definitely, as many are saying, has a classic DT feel and sound to it but with a fresh taste. Unfortunately, I can't help but feel like there is something missing in the song structure or just the general flow of the song. I think they should have included Mangini in the songwriting process. But it's still pretty good I guess.
  11. Mastodon is definitely coming out with a new album sometime this year. Also, according to the Tool website, they are not expecting their new album until May 2012.
  12. Must have been quite a drum solo.
  13. QUOTE (The Owl @ Apr 13 2011, 09:23 PM) QUOTE (In A Tidewater Surge @ Apr 13 2011, 10:58 PM) What album should I start with if I want a more atmospheric one? Been meaning to give Opeth a listen Depends... - Are you apprehensive about the growling vocals, but not entirely dismissive? If so go with "Watershed" or "Damnation" If you are fully accepting of the growls and welcome it, I'd go with "Blackwater Park", probably their best overall, and Produced by Steven Wilson. If you are entirely dismissive of growling vocals, then you'd still Try my first recommendation... I was at one point entirely dismissive of Opeth just because of the death growls, but I actually gave them a try ("Ghost Reveries" was the first album I tried out actually), and the music was so fantastic that I could have kicked my own ass for being so dismissive of this band for so long............. and eventually the growling vocals grew on me and I can actually enjoy them... Plus Opening the door to Opeth opened the door to other bands with harsh vocals that I would have otherwise dismissed as well, groups like Mastodon and Between the Buried and Me. Couldn't have said it better myself.
  14. SWIM TO THE MOON!!! The whole album is great, but this has got to be one of the greatest songs ever written.
  15. Am I the only one on this thread that thinks Black Clouds was nearly absolute rubbish? The only good songs on there were The Shattered Fortress and maybe Wither, even though Shattered Fortress was essentially a mash-up (but it was good) and Wither wasn't really that exciting, but it had more good moments than Nightmare to Remember and Count of Tuscany. The vocals on both of those felt bland and uninspired to me, and the "growling?" (I'm not even sure what you would call it) from Mike ruins the whole experience for me. A Rite of Passage is OK, but I can't even make it through Best of Times without falling asleep. There's just not a thing on the album to make me want to listen to it all the way through.
  16. *insert something actually Dream-Theater related*
  17. I'd much rather hear something the band is behind 100% than something they wrote because of what their fans expected of them. Can't wait for the new album!
  18. QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Mar 3 2011, 06:16 PM) QUOTE (Oracle @ Mar 3 2011, 08:07 PM)So after much forethought, I'm deciding to get into Dream Theater. I'm looking for five albums to start me off and I need recommendations. Fire away! Scenes From A Memory Awake Octavarium Images and Words Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence I personally like Train of Thought and Black Clouds and Silver Linings just as much as Images and Words and Awake, but those 2 albums are generally considered their best. Systematic Chaos is good too but its a bit repetitive so if you're just getting into DT, it may be a little boring. Scenes From A Memory is one of my top 5 albums of all time, so I'd recommend getting that or Awake first. A Change of Seasons EP is mostly covers and one 20 min long original so I wouldn't start there. I'm not familiar with their other albums. Hope this helped. edited for spelling I cannot concur more with this post.
  19. Coincidentally, I just recently heard Queensryche for the first time on the radio. I've been meaning to check them out for some time now. Great stuff!
  20. QUOTE (MMCXII @ Feb 28 2011, 12:24 AM) QUOTE (Kenneth @ Feb 28 2011, 01:17 AM) How you people enjoy this mess of "music" is beyond me. sorry, this is "Tool Fans Unite!"... I think you're looking for "Tools Unite!"
  21. QUOTE (The Owl @ Feb 9 2011, 06:18 PM) Dream Theater's New Drummer has been announced ........ Details At this point, that was exactly what I was expecting!
