BREAKING NEWS!!!

The New York Islanders have called a news conference for Thursday afternoon where they are expected to announce Neil Smith as their new general manager and Ted Nolan as head coach, TSN has learned.

Nolan worked as head coach and director of hockey operations for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2005-06, his first bench job since being fired after winning the Jack Adams Trophy with the Buffalo Sabres in 1996-97.

I always questioned why the Sabres let Nolan go. It would be nice to see what he can come up with.....

From ESPN:

Do you think it will change in the U.S.?

Cherry: I don't think so. It will be very strong where it's strong. There will be some places where hockey outdraws basketball. But like I said, I can't see people in West Virginia picking up hockey.

So, Edmonton's Ryan Smyth -- best mullet in hockey?

Cherry: Yeah he has, I have to say. I hope the Lord doesn't get mad at me, but when he gets it all fluffed up and they get a nice close-up of him, he looks like Jesus [laughs].

What about Barry Melrose?

Well, Barry slicks it down so much. I don't think Jesus would have all that gel on it.

____________

The funny thing is that I have been to West Virginia on several occasions to watch hockey.

The Red Wings will not offer netminder Manny Legace a new contract before July 1, leaving both parties free to explore other opportunities.

The Bruins are low on netminders! sarcasm.gif
