  1. Ack! Spell check strikes again! Thanks for pointing that one out -- though I kinda like "What You're Doug" :) I thought maybe the person that transcribed it was named Doug, and is used to typing it.... ;-)
  2. What You're Doug? hahahaha! thanks for posting
  3. Why didn't it matter with The Who? Their music wasn't cut and dry...squared off...and perfect...it had a sloppy quality to it that made them The Who! If you go see them now, they're more like a tribute act than anything else...some of the old recordings of things I've heard were so off the charts unruly, that you got into them more than the bands that played "like the record".
  4. I wouldn't mind a whole album like this... I'll see a Rush cover band if I'm reasonably certain I'll hear something after Signals or Grace Under Pressure. Yeah, I like how they did their own version of it as opposed to a bunch of guys trying to BE Rush... I guess half the problem is that I've heard recordings of Rush tribute acts, and I hate the fact that they are trying to sound exactly LIKE the band...(and I hate people struggling to sound like Geddy...hell GEDDY is stuggling to sound like Geddy these days!) I also got tired of the Floyd tributes, too. Hell back in the day, I used to have musician friends that were all in different bands, and we'd get together on off weekends occasionally, and just jam at things...we got into a Rush mode once and thought we should attempt being a tribute act on the side...until we got into a Yes mode...then a UK mode (that was tough as a drummer) and other things... I have a great CD set of different bands playing old Floyd tunes, but NOT trying to replicate it to the point that you have to listen closely to see if it IS Floyd playing! They take the song, and make it in their own style, which is cool! (album is called A Fair Forgery of Pink Floyd)
  5. Lars Ulrich Easily!
  6. From my seat, as a drummer for a pretty long time...ok almost all of my life... I think he's probably one of the first rock drummers to take things to a different level... I'm not going to say whether he was good or bad, he was the RIGHT drummer for The Who, and he did what was needed for the songs. When you listen back to some of their stuff, and hear what he played, and how he played it, you knew that he was the right guy for them, no questions..... How he would have played for a different band....who knows? But he took that old "four on the floor" attitude, and went up a few notches. I think he opened the door for a lot of guys (Peart included) to not be afraid to experiment, and take things to another level. "Technically" now... I would say that most people that look at drumming as an "art" would look at his style and say he was sloppy, unruly, and just not the best technician there was sitting behind a drum kit....but it didn't matter with The Who.
  7. Been a fan forever...not sure if I'd go....but if they're close, I'd consider it.
  8. Just to add....I HATE cover bands that try to replicate as close to the original as possible...about the only one I ever really enjoyed was The Musical Box (Genesis) doing The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway! I never had the privilege to ever see that live...these guys did it AMAZING-LY! (because Genesis would never consider ever bringing THAT one back...Peter Gabriel be damned!) I'm TIRED of Pink Floyd cover bands...I REFUSE to go see a Rush cover band..so when I see stuff like this, I can appreciate it!
  9. Yeah, no kidding, that guitar solo was cool!
  10. What??????? You met Billy Cobham????? You lucky bum!!!!!! "STRATUS!" "RED BARON!" "BIRDS OF FIRE!!" "INNER MOUNTING FLAME" OF LOVE!!!! Billy blows my mind!!! Incredible. I could type drummers and drums all day. It's sad I could never find a real band but back when I was young I actually did the mature and right thing. I had two beautiful baby girls with a young woman I really did love. I chose to run my dad's business instead of find rock and roll fame. I have no regrets. In today's world my woman and I are done but my two incredible awesome amazing lovely daughters remain. I can't confirm that God truly does exist but still after all of the negativity I know that I am truly blesses. Shit, where is this this post even going? I need to lean to install a filter in my brain, but then again that wouldn't be any fun. Listening to some Johnny Winter. Amazing stuff! Yeah...he did a clinic in my area...what was funny was a few (old) friends of mine from my drum and bugle corps days were there also, and they KNEW him..so I was impressed with that! I'll have to put my autographed pic of him (The Modern Drummer cover) up some day.... Great guy! played like CRAZY! I'm an old Mahavishnu fan, so....
  11. Weckl's great..love the stuff he did with Chick Corea's Elektrik (and Akoustic) bands! Watching one of his instructional videos years back when he was demonstrating his brush work STILL blows me away! Amazing drummer! I think I've only met two great drummers...(the late) Roberto Petaccia (who was with Maynard Ferguson) and Billy Cobham. Both great guys to talk to, they give you all kinds of tips!
  12. Awesome! And you're right. That would fit right on Grand Wazoo or Waka/Jawaka It's just amazing how that would have fit! Kind of like putting two of my favorite bands together!
  13. Grazi'!
  14. Can't find a YouTube kind of link...but do a search on Facebook for the US Army Band "Swamp Romp" playing Tom Sawyer! Great stuff! Sounds like Zappa's band from the Grand Wazoo-Waka/Jawaka era!
  15. Ok...got through it while driving, and except for the odd spot, I'm not liking it... Too long, trying too hard to make a big epic piece, the songs are all spotty, and interlude-y, and stuff starts to sound alike after a while...and that GOD AWFUL FREAKING SNARE DRUM SOUND!!! :fuckinputer: It made me want to drive into the side of a bridge at 100mph!!! LaBrie's got a nice voice, and I like some of the touches he puts on some of the different parts...Rudess's piano parts were nice, but I don't like his keyboard sounds...hard to distinguish where HE is vs. the orchestra, and some of the other stuff..sorry I like "sawtooth waves"....Petrucci's solo's and acoustic stuff here and there were nice. Myung was pretty non existent from his usual self...the drumming itself was interesting, Magnini's a decent drummer...but the snare sound really got into my craw, and detracted from the rest of the drum sound...I probably won't be listening to this one, too much....Guess I just like OLD DT....The past few albums haven't made me drool like they did in the past.
  16. Hemisphere's! Cygnus X-1 close behind, with Natural Science slipping in next.
  17. Was just thinking....if they do this all LIVE...the sound MAY be more palatable!
  18. Ok, starting to finds things I like...was sitting in my car waiting for my wife to walk out of work.... I'm LOVING LaBrie's singing! Three Days is nice...but his voice is really doing a nice job! Brother Can You Hear me, though...starts out like "Bring out your dead" from Holy Grail...but goes into "Bring The Boys Back Home" (more Wall sort of stuff) And I LOVE the beginning of A Life Left Behind! But still...that freaking snare drum!!!!
  19. I haven't seen Mangina play yet but I have seen Portnoy play at least 14 times. Meh. I am sure the new Mike is better. Not sure... I like MP's stuff outside of DT. I like his stuff with Neal Morse, and Transatlantic. His DT stuff was just notes for the sake of notes in a LOT of cases, and I can't stand that balls to the wall stuff...which is why my first listen to this new album isn't sitting well with me... I'm just hoping that I can get past this snare sound. But my issue with MP was he relied upon the double bass stuff CONSTANTLY and it seemed like a lot of his fills were the same thing over and over from song to song. I just don't know enough of Mangini's stuff to comment on what he can and can't do. I haven't really liked the last two albums, so....
  20. Portnoy is a master when it comes to reaching a perfect drum sound No...whatever engineer he's been using (and his tech who does the tuning) has it down... Whomever was MM's tech, and whomever the engineer is needs to be slapped Haha! I thought Rod was being sarcastic with his Portnoy comment. That's yet another great point. You can't blame the entire sound issue on the drummer. The engineer is also to blame. Yeah...Engineer, producer... Most engineers just listen to the drums, place the mic's and go... This stuff is just horrid sounding...
  21. Portnoy is a master when it comes to reaching a perfect drum sound No...whatever engineer he's been using (and his tech who does the tuning) has it down... Whomever was MM's tech, and whomever the engineer is needs to be slapped
  22. Finally got to listen to it a little in my car...maybe the first five or six tunes...right off the bat, I WILL say that listening to it "open air" and not with ear buds IS a big difference...but I will ALSO say...the drum sound is freaking HORRIBLE! Sounds like that triggered crap that they used for Images and Words...That snare sound is just grating on the ears! Doesn't anyone know how to records a snare drum so it SOUNDS like a snare drum anymore?!?!? yeeeesh! Too much gating if you ask me.... Also so far..the fact that one song sort of melds into another puts me into a "just make one big tune" kind of thing. So it's not an album to have in your "random" folder on your iPod.
  23. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/jaminbenb/Cuda2.jpg Barracuda! (Cue Nancy Wilson)
  24. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/jaminbenb/Angel1.jpg One I took on a reef in Key Largo...always liked this one
  25. Er, what? This is anything but formulaic DT. And lots of notes? Maybe relative to many other bands, for DT, this is probably their least wanky album (along with Falling into Infinity) to date, especially when you consider how much material is on this (130 minutes of music). You can count on one hand the number of times they shred on this. I agree. i'm gonna say........and some will disagree. having sat with this album for a while. this is some of the most ambitious music DT has ever made. it is anything but safe. It is Diverse........and has some of the best pure melodies they've ever written. It's amazing what they've done here. Mick As I said...it's my initial assessment, and it's been through ear buds, and incomplete. I need time with it in my car, loud and with the ability to run something back that strikes me with no difficulty. But my first impression is "eh"....
