That had to be the worst tour they've ever done. That whole era needs to die and stay dead. Power Windows, Hold Your Fire and Presto are three really bad albums. WRONG! I'm not exactly in love with HYF or Presto (but both are cool), but PoW is a classic, IMO. yes, yes... i saw all 3 of those tours...not to mention countless others... why the hate?? I don't really see how anyone could listen to FBN-MP and think that the music didn't start to slip a little with Signals. I've struggled with describing this for a long time, but at some point in the 80's, music in general seemed to get lighter, almost "bouncy" (for lack of a better word), in a way. Song structure changed, songs began to sound more processed. Rush had changed every album, but at some point they seemed to lose their fire. If you can't hear a difference, I don't really know what to tell you. All bands do it. They hit it big and lose the hunger that got them there. This is one of the most ridiculous arguments. All bands do it. They lose the fire and start playing lighter, more commercial sounding stuff. Many of them make some sort of recovery, but never really get back to the magic of the old days.

SHUT UP. i dont know hoe you could think that!! those albums are packed with Rush "moments". and i would love to hear Prime Mover done live now.. and i really hope the give Power Windows some representation this time around. Ah, my first "SHUT UP". Good one. Are we no longer entitled to opinions here?
  3. Just for the hell of it, my "Dream" setlist would look something like this: (BTW, since it's my dream, I'm going to suspend reality a bit and completely ignore a bunch of albums, basically just sticking to realistic time limitations, and picking the stuff I'd like to hear if I got to pick the setlist for one show. Oh, and also sticking with the Moving Pictures/Time Machine thing. My Time Machine would basically just take us back to a better, vanished time.) 1- Bastille Day 2- Anthem 3- Best I Can 4- Beneath, Between, Behind 5- Entre Nous 6- Freewill 7- The Analog Kid 8- Afterimage 9- New World Man 10- Kid Gloves 11- A Passage to Bangkok 12- The Trees 13- Tom Sawyer 14- Red Barchetta 15- YYZ/drums 16- Limelight 17- The Camera Eye 18- Witch Hunt 19- Vital Signs 20- Rivendell 21- Losing It 22- Subdivisions 23- 2112 (Overture/Temples) 24- Cygnus X-1 (complete) 25- Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (complete) 26- A Farewell to Kings 27- Circumstances 28- The Spirit of Radio This may not be exact, but it would be close. I don't care anything about a drum solo, but I understand that it gives the boys a break, and in this setlist, Neil gets his break a few songs later, but YYZ already works and I didn't want to add another song just to accommodate a drum solo.

  5. QUOTE (Joshua @ Jun 10 2010, 08:13 AM) The unlikely official rumoured setlist speculated to be rehearsed and considered to be bogus.... or something. Far Cry The Analog Kid Time Stand Still The Pass Time And Motion Caravan BU2B Vapor Trails A Farewell To Kings Jacob's Ladder Marathon --------------------- Tom Sawyer Red Barchetta YYZ Limelight The Camera Eye Witch Hunt Vital Signs Freewill Malignant Narcissism Drum Solo Hope 2112 Overture/The Temples Of Syrinx/Grand Finale ---------------------- Bastille Day Subdivisions The Spirit Of Radio If this were the actual setlist I'd need to change underwear at least 3-4 times during the show. Far Cry is such a great opener, with the use of the pyrotechnics and all. Anyone who hadn't seen Rush before would know they were in for something special. Having A Farewell to Kings and Bastille Day in there would be a dream come true.
  6. Bastille Day Best I Can A Farewell to Kings Cygnus X-1 (complete) Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (complete) But Kid Gloves would rock, too, as would Something For Nothing.
  7. Bastille Day A Farewell to Kings Best I Can (Ha! Like they'd ever play this one! I just love the guitar, though. It's really tight and direct and I love the solo)
  8. QUOTE (Todem @ Jun 2 2010, 11:15 AM) QUOTE (moedrabowsky @ Jun 2 2010, 10:55 AM) QUOTE (Todem @ Jun 2 2010, 10:41 AM) It's for the fans....what's wrong with that? And if you think it's a money grab...grow the f**k up. If it's "for the fans" why not give it away? Of course it's a money grab. Just like R30, Snakes and Arrows Live and the Time Machine Tour. They want to rake in as much cash as they can before they're done. I don't blame them, but don't act it's some kind of magnanimous gesture to their fans. Someone certainly needs to grow up. It works both ways...and I am not thinking it's a gesture of epic proportions. They finally realized...we want them to do this.....because if we did not they would not go to the expense to produce it. I don't have any problem with a money grab in this context. As long as they are playing long shows and giving the effort they give every time out, who cares? With the setlists and the length of the shows we've been getting lately, I feel like I'm getting my money's worth at the show.
  9. So many of my favorite bands release every show, let alone every tour, of course most of those bands change the setlist nightly (I'd love for Rush to do that). The Dead, Phish, Pearl Jam, Mule, Wilco, Umphrey's, Dylan, Bright Eyes, Felice, etc. These bands not only change the setlist nightly, but some will go 5-6 shows (or more) without repeating one song. I've got at least 100 Pearl Jam shows, probably 50 Phish shows and I don't know how many Dead shows, so I sure as hell want as many live shows from my favorite band (Rush!!!) as I can get.
  10. QUOTE (GeddyLeeRoth @ Jun 2 2010, 11:40 PM) QUOTE (Xanadude69 @ May 28 2010, 10:13 PM) If this really is the setlist, I will have to splurge and buy a ticket after all. But I am not believing anything until the firs show of the tour. They are playing all of MP , Jacob's Ladder, songs they've "never played before", AND this tour is billed The Time Machine Tour, and your holding out because of the set list? I was amused by that as well. I didn't need to know anything but "Time Machine" tour and I was ready to go.
  11. QUOTE (jesse2112 @ May 30 2010, 01:09 AM) QUOTE (amish_ashaman @ May 30 2010, 01:00 AM) If they really wanted to show us they meant business with this "Time Machine" thing, they'd open with Bastille Day. I really don't see how it ever fell out of the rotation. me too awesome opener as heard on Different Stages and ATWAS Both are kickass sets. That would be a REAL Time Machine...getting to see a show you never thought you'd be able to. ...Like Maiden did with their Somewhere Back in Time tour last tour. They played an all -80's setlist and didn't even hint at playing anything written in the past 20 years.
  12. If they really wanted to show us they meant business with this "Time Machine" thing, they'd open with Bastille Day. I really don't see how it ever fell out of the rotation.
  13. QUOTE (EmotionDetector @ May 29 2010, 09:56 AM) QUOTE (amish_ashaman @ May 29 2010, 02:42 AM) Anybody who likes any of the newer stuff more than the FBN-GUP era has no idea what they are talking about and probably prefers Van Halen with Sammy Hagar, Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio (I love Dio, but in the context of Sabbath, he ain't Ozzy), AC/DC with Brian Johnson, Metallica after Master of Puppets, Iron Maiden after Seventh Son, 90125 over Fragile/CTTE/Relayer/TYA, etc. Re-read your post again... Perhaps it is YOU who doesn't know what you're talking about. Are you really sure about that? I'd welcome you to put that to the test. Go ask long time hardcore fans of every band I just mentioned and see if they agree with me. Every band has a golden age and it's never that hard to pick out. BTW, I know I'm new here so y'all don't know me or anything and can't know the tone of my message. Yes, this is really my opinion, but I'm kinda just messin' with you.
  14. I knew y'all would love my last post. Haha. Everyone's got an opinion, right? Yes, that is my opinion, but I did intentionally go a little strong to the hole with it.
  15. QUOTE (greg2112 @ May 29 2010, 12:01 AM) The crappy period is from Hold your Fire through Roll The Bones. PERIOD. Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Hemispheres is probably my favorite Rush, but I've probably spent more time listening to Fly By Night than anything else. The guitar solo in Best I Can is one of my all-time favorites. The last verse in Anthem has been a personal "anthem" of mine for 25 years. I'd love to hear more of that snarling bass we heard in By-Tor and the Snow Dog. Rivendell is the first song I ever sung to both of my boys. I sang it as a lullaby for both of them and they love it to this day. That said, I love everything from FBN through Signals, but I also really like Grace Under Pressure a lot. Then they fell off the edge and started sucking. While I do like Dreamline, I think most of RTB is garbage. Snakes and Arrows is the best album they've done since Grace Under Pressure. Anybody who likes any of the newer stuff more than the FBN-GUP era has no idea what they are talking about and probably prefers Van Halen with Sammy Hagar, Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio (I love Dio, but in the context of Sabbath, he ain't Ozzy), AC/DC with Brian Johnson, Metallica after Master of Puppets, Iron Maiden after Seventh Son, 90125 over Fragile/CTTE/Relayer/TYA, etc. You like what you like, okay, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. If a friend who has never heard Rush before comes to you and wants to hear some Rush, you don't play Stick It Out or Roll the Bones. You put on 2112 and say "Now that's Rush!"
  16. QUOTE (Solitudeix @ May 25 2010, 07:57 PM) QUOTE (roadqueen @ May 24 2010, 03:03 PM) Geez if you HAVE to convince anyone to go see Rush forget it, we don't want em there. Time off from work, transportation arrangements, and $$$... Not everyone I know who likes Rush wants to take the necessary steps to put those 3 things together unless they feel its worth it. Some people I know wont go to a show in Montreal at night if they have to work in the morning, let alone in another city without a car to take them there (because here in Montreal you do not need a car to live happily if you work in the city). Add in the day off afterwards (certain folks I know would not be paid for said day off) and it changes things a bit. Starts to be a bit of a hassle for those not as devout as I am. I'm right there with ya! I live in Memphis and St. Louis is as close as they are coming to Memphis. The show is on a Sunday and I have to work the next day, so we're driving back home Sunday night after the show. Not to mention that I don't know anyone who is a hardcore Rush fan like me that lives around here. My friends that I used to go to shows with (and who are also big Rush fans) have moved away(we're all in our 40's now and doing the family thing). So yeah, there is some sacrifice involved. Such is life in the real world.
  17. QUOTE (Mara @ May 26 2010, 07:47 AM) Come on, give the guy a break! I for one love the "Evening With Rush" format. Opening acts, for me, are usually just an excuse to take my time getting to the venue. Either that, or it seems like I'm going just for the opening act. That said, some recent shows I've seen with good openers were Matisyahu opening for Les Claypool, Dr. Dog opening for Wilco and The Felice Brothers opening for Bright Eyes.
  18. Okay, this is my first post...I'll try to make it a good one! Neil clearly says "old songs". That makes me wonder exactly what he considers to be an "old song". Those of us that were around in the 80's when the Rush sound changed and got significantly lighter and less intense, might consider an "old song" to be Moving Pictures and earlier. That has always been the cutoff for me. For the longest time, I generally thought of the first three albums as the "early" period, 2112 through Moving Pictures as the "classic" period, and everything from Signals on as the newer stuff. Now, I might include Signals and even Grace Under Pressure with the classic period. For the record, I hated Grace when it first came out. It took me years to warm up to it. IMO, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire and Presto all stunk. Roll the Bones was a little better, but by that time I had lost hope that Rush would ever write really good music again. Snakes and Arrows is the best thing they've done in years. So again, my point is, what does Neil consider to be the "old" stuff? I remember before the S&A tour, they had said they would be retiring certain material. For that tour, they pretty much junked Power Windows, Presto, Counterparts and Test For Echo, and also seemed quick to abandon the material from Vapor Trails, playing only One Little Victory and Secret Touch. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see them continue that trend here, especially since the original press release stated that they would play Moving Pictures, new material and stuff from the classic period. They generally don't mix it up too much from one tour to the next, and they generally keep to playing a lot of the same songs. If they play the 2 brand new songs, keep a couple of songs from S&A (Far Cry and MalNar), OLV from Vapor Trails (I think they really like that one), and then focus on stuff that they have had in their rotation from the classic period, they could end up with a set list that looks something like this: (This is a mix of the S&A setlist and the original Moving Pictures setlist with a few tweaks to focus on the classic period and still mix it up from the last tour. If you look at the last 4 tours, there are some patterns and trends.) 1- 2112 (Overture and Temples) (this was the opener on the original Moving Pictures tour) 2- The Analog Kid or maybe something from Grace Under Pressure (this replaces Digital Man) 3- Jacob's Ladder (I personally think it will come early---this is the slot Entre Nous had last time) 4- (open) 5- Freewill 6- Caravan 7- BU2B 8- Far Cry 9- Circumstances or The Trees (I wish they'd play both) 10- (open) 11- Dreamline 1- Tom Sawyer 2- Red Barchetta 3- YYZ 4- Limelight 5- The Camera Eye 6- Witch Hunt 7- Vital Signs 8- New World Man (they seem to alternate this and Subdivisions) 9- Natural Science 10- Malignant Narcissism/Drums 11- (open)(something acoustic, to give Neil a break---Different Strings is a song I keep hearing in these conversations) 12- A Passage to Bangkok 13- The Spirit of Radio 1- One Little Victory 2- (open) 3- (open) (If I had to guess, I'd guess that LVS will be the closer, as it was on the original Moving Pictures tour) 27 songs, fewer surprises than many people would say, a couple of "oh crap, not this song again" moments, and 5-6 slots for actual surprises. Neil could be talking about songs on Moving Pictures in his comment. If so, those 5-6 slots could be filled with stuff they normally play anyway (Xanadu, Closer To the Heart, Roll the Bones, Between the Wheels, Distant Early Warning, In the Mood, etc.), but I think we'll get at least one more good surprise in addition to what we already know., but I'm not looking for anything that will be too much of a shock. I seriously doubt they'll dust off something really cool and unexpected like Bastille Day or A Farewell To Kings, though being an eternal optimist, I just might bring an extra pair of underwear just in case they do.
