There's a bar/restaurant that lots of Rush fans met up at a few blocks away from the UC last time they played there... I cannot recall its name, but it was actually a pretty decent spot, and there was a parking garage right across the street where we parked the car to avoid the UC lot and just walked over... You are correct that the neighborhood by the UC has improved gentrification-wise over the past several years, but still can be a bit shady.
