  1. QUOTE (Sir Lerxst @ Oct 1 2011, 06:09 PM)Whilst I agree that the vocals didn't amaze me, there were other things that caught my attention more, such as the guitar sound in some songs. Agree on the guitar sound. The sig Les Paul Alex uses on the first set sounds really good. The sunburst Les Paul sounds terrible on MP and Caravan.
  2. QUOTE (D3strukt @ Sep 30 2011, 03:15 PM)Actually, their tours are relatively freaking short. Compared to ACDC who are older than them TECHNICALLY play harder, also their last tour was 18 months long. The compromise to that is, that they only play for 2 hours. ... and play only 4 chords.
  3. QUOTE (SeamusWiles @ Apr 24 2011, 03:27 PM) I'm no audiophile, but the album was recorded over 30 years ago... I'm not sure what some people were expecting. Why should it matter when it was recorded? Some of the best hi-res/5.1 releases I own were originally released in the 70's early 80's. I'm more amazed when I hear modern releases that actually sound good in hi-res and 5.1.
  4. QUOTE (Mandalorian Hunter @ Apr 15 2011, 05:27 PM) QUOTE (ak2112 @ Apr 14 2011, 04:20 AM) MP was recorded in analog amd mixed/mastered digitally. Even though thats the case, this DVD-A falls FAR short of other DVD-A's of older albums that I own. Two that come to mind are the Eagles Hotel California and Fleetwood Macs Rumours, both of which pre-date Moving Pictures and both of which blow it out of the water in terms of audio quality. The more I listen to this new Moving Pictures, the more disappointed I feel. This is not a knock on Rush but I do feel like they need to get someone else other than Chycki to remaster their albums. Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree comes to mind. All of PT's albums sound amazing on DVD-A and the remastering of King Crimsons albums that he did sound just awesome. This new MP is a major sonic bummer for me, though I hope all the new remasters come out in DVD-A...I just hope Rich Chycki isnt the one mastering them all, though I have a sickening feeling he will be There's some hints we might be getting 2112 from SW. Source please.
  5. QUOTE (hughes&kettner @ Apr 15 2011, 11:20 PM)Band was great, no real glitches at all- they NAILED spirit of the radio- were a little(tiny teeny bit) tight for a while after that- but still sounded superb. they really hammed it up tonight. From looking at all the youtube vids and listening to all the comments on the boards it does seem they were on fire that night. Though they seemed to have had a little glitch in Presto during and after Alex's solo. Neil get's a little behind, but they recover nicely. Just wonder if they'll try fixing it.
  6. Have heard OM2, and it was an attempt to recatch a past glory. Plus most of it is filler, which is nowhere to be found on the original. Just my opinions though. I know some say that the story on the original wasn't finished, so they needed a part 2 -- I disagree. The story ends in tragedy, much like 2112. Both individuals fail in their attempts, which should convey to the listener (or reader) the one element they both struggled against. Which was big government, a higher ruling class -- whatever you want to call it. Sort of like Shakespeare stories, but from the perspective of the opposite social class.
  7. QUOTE (moltenlava @ Aug 8 2008, 09:24 PM)QUOTE (grand phil-nale @ Aug 8 2008, 04:57 PM) Got all the DT albums. I have to listen to an entire album before I make any judgements. DT is stuck in a major rut, and are in real need of a producer, but sadly Portnoy's ego will never let that happen. Well, I guess the follow-up question would be....Why do you keep on picking them up? If you don't think they've done anything interesting in years, then why do keep on listening? You say that you have all the albums. I usually don't purchase discs for bands that I think aren't doing something exciting. Two out of the last four DT albums have been alright. I'll give the detractors that. Six Degrees and Systematic Chaos aren't consistent releases. But, ya gotta think, these DT albums are like 70+ minutes long. And, the average piece is what, 10 to 12 minutes long? So, even on alright album, if you walk away with two or three pieces that you dig, you're still a winner. But, the other two releases this decade were better than just alright. Train of Thought and Octavarium were damn solid. I think I'm finished. Done the same thing with others bands in the past. With Queensryche my ending point was Tribe. After the brilliance of Promised Land, it was saddening to hear HITNF, Q2K and Tribe. It's the same with Scenes and all the DT albums that have followed it.
  8. QUOTE (moltenlava @ Aug 8 2008, 04:02 PM)QUOTE (grand phil-nale @ Aug 7 2008, 05:36 PM) DT has not put out anything remotely interesting in years. You probably stopped listening to them long ago. I think the absolute best examples of songwriting in the DT catalog are on two recent recordings. Train of Thought (2003) and Octavarium (2005). And, I've been listening very, very intently to PT's body of work, so I'm just as qualified to compare them as anyone else who knows both groups inside and out. And, I see absolutely no difference in the 'quality' of songwriting between any of the three 'big guns' of Progressive Rock/Metal. Those being: Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and Opeth. All three are on the absolute top of their game this decade. The only paramater that DT stands above the other two is on the musicianship. And, this says a lot because both PT and Opeth are really great bands....Word from Wilson is that there will sometime in the next year or two be a collaboration of members of all three outfits. Got all the DT albums. I have to listen to an entire album before I make any judgements. DT is stuck in a major rut, and are in real need of a producer, but sadly Portnoy's ego will never let that happen.
  9. Porcupine Tree for sure. DT has not put out anything remotely interesting in years. In recent you get Muse rip offs, more vaudeville piano, and vocals by an ego inflated drummer that are so bad (Dark Eternal Night a good example), you start to wonder why no one else in the band speaks up. Porcupine Tree started out as a solo experiment of Wilson's. The first few albums are out there, and would not be everybody's cup of tea, but everything from '95s The Sky Moves Sideways to current are all great albums that I highly recommend.
  10. QUOTE (The Owl @ Jul 12 2008, 08:06 PM) QUOTE (Gompers @ Jul 12 2008, 06:00 PM) QUOTE (priest_of_syrinx @ Jul 12 2008, 10:30 AM) I got Lightbulb Sun in the mail yesterday. Great album! So now I have... Signify (2 disc) Stupid Dream (2 disc) Lightbulb Sun (2 disc) In Absentia Deadwing Fear of a Blank Planet No live CDs? You have to get at least one. Warszawa! Cool... I'm all about this thread! Coma Divine is a better live album. If you like FOABP -- get the Nil Recurring EP. Also, if you are a fan of Floyd, The Sky Moves Sideways is a must have.
