  1. QUOTE (yyzyy @ Jul 9 2009, 12:17 AM) DREAM THEATER OWNS
  2. The Homing Beacon - A Song For Michael Jackson http://www.bucketheadland.com/ Well, I figured sooner or later, BH would have a tribute to MJ. If you go to BH's website, the intro has the link to the new song. It's understandably mellow, but I really enjoyed it. I was hoping for a new album ( ), but maybe this is just the first song...
  3. I still need to get around to listening to the whole new album. However, I had to chime in and say that I popped in Octavarium a few days ago, and have been listening to it in the car all weekend. The album is f'n strong! It was an album that I bought when it was released, then listened to it once, it didn't really stick with me, so I stored it away. So glad I gave it another chance...because I think it's extremely strong. What do other DT fans think of Octavarium??
  4. QUOTE (Tortoise and Hare @ Jun 26 2009, 01:19 PM) I want Portnoy's HYPER-ENERGY!!! Hare I just want his drumming ability!
  5. QUOTE (Test 4 Gecko @ Jun 26 2009, 04:06 AM) QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Jun 25 2009, 02:17 PM) Look, it's EASY to pin-point a band's most popular record as overrated. You can do that with Kiss's Destroyer too. And let's face it, MP is Rush's most widely popular LP. Frankly it's not even close because mostly it's older diehards (and prog fans) who own 2112. MP was and remains a more widely accessible album. It's more mainstream...has shorter, more radio-friendly songs, contains their all-time most-well-known tune, etc. Still and all there's often a REASON it's so widely admired beyond being a "darling." Now that may not jive with your own tastes, fine enough. You like Coke, I dig Pepsi...so be it. But I think it's generally safe to say that Moving Pictures is only overrated in your own mind, much like nice tits are overrated...or a Porsche Carrera is overrated. You're a legs man...or you dig a Maserati instead. Cool. But Moving Pictures is still the bomb-digity. That's as close to FACT as it gets when discussing Rush-related "opinion." I'll stand by it too. We'll always quibble about the merits of Vapor Trails and Counterparts, but not Moving Pictures. Not really... A band's most popular - in sales terms album - seldom coincides with their best work, and MP is no exception. It may be a competent and reasonably cohesive album, but sure as eggs is eggs it ain't Rush at their best. I remember to this day how flat I felt after first hearing MP, where was anything of the caliber of TSoR? Freewill? Xanadu? LVS? The Trees? Circumstances? By-Tor? Working Man????? Answer - missing. Still you gotta admire the sheep. You know, it's fine that you feel it's overrated. I'll also agree that a band's best-selling album, is not always their very best. But when it comes to Rush, there is little doubt that Moving Pictures is THE ONE that fits both. The problem I have is your line calling people "sheep" for believing in this. I can't speak for everyone, but I can damn sure tell you with 100% confidence that I personally could care less if MP only sold one copy (mine ) or 50 million. It doesn't change what's on the actual record, and I what I believe to be the greatest album of all-time. You could spend years with MP under the microscope, and IMO, you won't find a damn flaw anywhere on it. It's perfect. The lyrics, the music, the songs, the length, and the production. The boys were on absolute fire at the time, and it paid off in the form of this album. With that said, I agree...those other songs you mentioned are absolute pieces of artwork. I love them all, and a few of those happen to be my favourite Rush tracks. However, I've never listened to MP and thought that those were 'missing'. There really is nothing I could change on MP to make it better. That's how much I personally love the record. Just my opinion.
  6. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jun 25 2009, 03:40 PM) Side one of Moving Pictures is "ABSOLUTE PERFECTION." The best album side of all time IMHO. THIS right here is absolutely 100% true!
  7. BTW...easiest poll of all-time. Seriously. I'll give you 7 reasons why MP is certainly NOT overrated: 1) Tom Sawyer 2) Red Barchetta 3) YYZ 4) Limelight 5) The Camera Eye 6) Witch Hunt 7) Vital Signs That should be all you need to realize why it's not overrated.
  8. QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Jun 25 2009, 03:27 PM) Overplayed LEADS to overrated. What's the point of the distinction again? While that may be true for some albums, that does NOT apply to epic masterpieces!
  9. QUOTE (Joesmechanic @ Jun 19 2009, 04:38 PM) QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ Apr 23 2009, 02:49 PM) Funny how that Joesmechanic dude throws "Rush fanboy" at us like it's an insult, and criticizes how much some of us have posted, yet he's posted on another message board for several years. I guess it's okay to get all obsessive about the drums, but not Rush. You and your dumbassed friends here are just that. Fanbois to the hilt. Ooooo!!! Lookie here!! I've got one of Neils drum sticks!! Ooooo!!! I know all the words to the trees! Oooooo!!! I've got every Rush t-shirt from every show....Ooooo!!! Notice I haven't been on this website in over a year. Which is close to the case for that "other" website you're talking about (House of Drumming). I don't post on HOD that much because I usually communicate directly with most I know on there. And who decided to rise this thread from the dead. Yup...another Rush fanboi like yourself. You guys just can't help yourselves huh? Where's that loser smiley when you need it. haha!! Why don't I post much on the net you ask? Because I have a life. Unlike your fanboi's and girls here. I just noticed a new thread about Neil over at House of Drumming if you care to take a look. http://www.houseofdrumming.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6306 Whats even cooler is....our own Peter Erskine (Erskoman) is now teaching your drum god. Good for Neil & how he wants to expand his drumming horizons. BTW...I harbor no ill feelings towards Neil. Neil is the reason why I got into drumming. Hemispheres is what did it for me in the 8th grade. What he does, he does well. Why he's so anti-social is beyond me. Very unlike the overwhelming majority of professional musicians. But whatever. Thats his deal. Doesn't effect my life one iota. What started out as me telling a bunch of close friends on HOD about Freddys B-day took on a life of its own. Freddy has been a close freind of mine for some 26 years now. Freddy personally called me to come down that evening. The only problem I had was with Neils stupid assed body guard Michael Mosbiatch. He's a little prick & a liar. Peter Erskine even set the record straight about what happened that night at HOD when this all went down. Back when you guys thought he wasn't a signifigant person in this whole story. If I ever saw him Michael again, I'd bitch slap his little girl ass into tomorrow. Have a nice life little Rush fanboi kiddies. And BTW...get out a little more why dontcha? Try to pry yourself from your computers once in a while. Theres a whole world out there. I'm sorry...but what exactly is your purpose on this board? Why does it bother you that people like talking about Rush? Did you register on here JUST to let us all know that we are apparent "fanbois" because we post on a site about a band we like? Are you the 'fanboi police'?? Woah...this post is getting too long. I'd better run outside to check out that "world" that you're referring to.

  11. QUOTE (tangy @ May 27 2009, 12:10 PM) QUOTE (EmotionDetector @ May 27 2009, 10:43 AM) Hey Guys, Does anyone know the truth to this: (Source: Wikipedia) Forensic Follies is the twenty-seventh album by avant-garde guitarist Buckethead, currently only sold on his latest tour. It is another album from the Dan Monti production line, and has a similar sound to the more recent Monti releases: Released May 27, 2009 1. Forensic Follies 2. A-Cycle Light Ray Cannons 3. Splinter in the Slunks Eye 4. Under the Sea Scalp 5. Whirlwind 6. Plunger 7. Trunk of the Tree 8. Slunk Shrine 9. Open Coffin Jamboree 10. (I'll Be) Taking Care of Grandpa 11. Three Headed Troll 12. Splinter Dissection 13. Mannequin Molds It says it was released today (March 27)! Any truth to this?? If so...then then it is. I was just checking out the Buckethead TK forum and it appears thats right. A little surprise at the beginning of the tour. Yup...it's now up for purchase at the Store as well. I've heard a few tracks on YouTube, and while they're alright, there are other albums I need to get first! The great news is, I finally added a few more albums to my collection this week. In the mail, I just received: POPULATION OVERRIDE INBRED MOUNTAIN A REAL DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH Population Override is really exceptional. I mean, this album just has such an organic feel. The songs all sound fresh and alive...very cool record! So much fun to listen to! Inbred Mountain is hit and miss for me so far. Some of the songs don't hit me at all (yet, anyways), BUT...it also contains 2 songs that I would probably put in my Top 5 for Buckethead: LOTUS ISLAND and PLASTINATION STATION! Killer f'n songs! The new 'Diamond' album sounds great too. Once I get it back from my fiancee, I will certainly be giving it a closer listen, but all that I've heard from it so far, I really like. 'Broken Mirror' sounds outstanding! I think next on my list is: Crime Slunk Scene, Albino Slug, and Elephant Man's Alarm Clock

  16. QUOTE (metaldad @ May 11 2009, 08:02 AM) my 2 cents with 5150 they became a different band . 5150 is also the best album they did with SAMMY imo. what a lot of people don't know is 3 of the songs on 5150 were written when dave was still in the band. GOOD ENOUGH SUMMER NIGHTS i forget the other one . i saw ED on mtv and those are the songs he said . imo , you can not touch the first 4 albums . DIVER DOWN had way to many cover songs but ED and DAVE really were not even talking to each other anymore. 1984 blew them up and they were bigger than ever. 0u812 had a few good songs, F.U.C.K. had about 2 good songs and BALANCE was crap except for FEELIN. i got into them in 1980 and saw them in 1981[best show i have ever seen] live with sammy it was a joke. sammy never really sang any dave era songs which to me is a joke. ED and AL let him do whatever he wanted . bad move . they should have changed the name of the band if they were going to play 90% new stuff. SAMMY has a much better voice but DAVE writes better songs for V.H. they were never VAN HALEN with sammy . simple as that I agree with some of this stuff. Certainly, comparing the two Van Halen eras is a tough thing to do, because while they had some similarities, they were still two completely different bands. Like Metaldad said, if they had changed their name to something else, it would be easier to look at the strong points of the Hagar-era, which I think get lost in the shuffle, when fans have to pick between an album like OU812 and Van Halen 1. I LOVE the Hagar era. In fact, I'm probably one of the few that really love it as much as I do. However, I don't think ANY other VH album (from either era) touches VH1. I still say VH1 is the greatest debut album of all-time by any band. But Hagar has killer material too. Roth was more about the party / girls / sex songs, while Hagar was the best with the serious songwriting. Their material off F.U.C.K. is extremely good IMO. I think that Hagar's "fun" songs can come out sounding a bit like he was trying too hard. Not all, but some. I think Sammy was at his very best when he stuck to writing the serious material. "The Dream Is Over" and "Pleasure Dome" for instance, are two extremely strong pieces of work, that probably get lost in the shuffle, if you include all of Roth's work. I love both eras. But again, we're talking about two different bands. Like Metaldad said, they should've switched the band name when they inserted Hagar into the mix. Personally, I never compare the two eras. I just enjoy each of them for what they really are...different bands.
  17. QUOTE (metaldad @ Apr 8 2009, 09:47 PM) QUOTE (Rushian King @ Apr 7 2009, 05:22 PM) Given what I've read from Tick the last few years I'd consider him as much as anyone else on these boards, a troll. He's not as blatant as most, but this thread is another example of his behaviour. . this is in the top ten of the most stupid posts i have ever seen here . get a clue Yeah, I agree. While I can honestly say that I pretty much completely disagree with Tick's opinions in this thread, I would not consider him any sort of "troll". He has his opinions, and was stating them with passion. That's not being a "troll" in my books.
  18. QUOTE (baxtrice @ Apr 7 2009, 11:37 AM) Okay, just to be a little sarcastic and lighten to mood here; Raise your hand if you think Nirvana will make it into the RRHOF before Rush. *raises hand* You know what, in 5 years, NIRVANA will be inducted. If they aren't, it's a damn shame. Like RUSH, they belong there. From what I recall, I don't think there are many Nirvana fans on this board, but regardless, NIRVANA was THE sh*t in the 90's. There were other great 'grunge' bands (ie. Alice In Chains, STP, Pearl Jam, etc), but Nirvana had arguably the biggest impact on the Grunge scene. NEVERMIND is incredible, and to this day, still one of the most important albums ever released. It may not be for everyone, but you cannot deny its impact on music. You can toss stones at me all you want...but NIRVANA belongs in the HOF. Oh, and if they make it in, they can't be accused of "attention whoring" themselves. It was well-documented that Kurt Cobain was never comfortable with the idea of being 'popular'. It essentially just happened.
  19. QUOTE (tick @ Apr 7 2009, 10:01 AM) Someone needs to tell me why Ricky Nelson is in the rock hall of fame ? That one baffles me greatly. Lastly. Opinions are what they are, so mine is not necessarily the right one. Even though it is. I'll probably look like a moron here, but who the hell is Ricky Nelson?
  20. QUOTE (metaldad @ Apr 7 2009, 08:32 AM) Maybe they could call it FULLY LOADED?!? [/quote] nah , A LOAD OF SHIT would be a perfect title
  21. QUOTE (tick @ Apr 6 2009, 10:06 PM) QUOTE (WCFIELDS @ Apr 6 2009, 08:16 PM) QUOTE (tick @ Apr 6 2009, 05:24 PM) QUOTE (NeilPeartFan2112 @ Apr 6 2009, 05:34 PM) I'm fairly certain it was what you consider their "good albums" (pre Load) that got them into the Rock Hall in the first place, so I don't really see where you're going with this argument. Their influence on metal is arguably unmatched to this day. Also, Master of Puppets is considered by many to be the greatest metal album of all time. No reason Metallica should not be in the Rock Hall. Oh, and if making crappy albums is what it takes to get into the hall, then Yes should have a one way ticket. They made some really, really shitty albums after Relayer. Kiss, Rush, Yes, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Styx, Journey, just to name a few are not in. Why ? Because they did not become cartoon characters, who attention whored there way in. "attention whored their way in"........ Dude, they are one of the most important Metal bands of ALL TIME. That is a fact....... Yeah so ? Who gives a shit, thats not why they are where they are, and you know it. Read my last post. It makes perfect sense. Examine what your saying for a minute and think hard... The "rock and roll hall of fame" just inducted Metallica.... Say it again. Now say it again. Meditate on it. Now read my last post again. Your trying to give credit to a joke museum for getting something right ? Meditate on that. Its bullshit if you think the reason they put them in is because there astute enough to recognize the brilliance of such an important act. You know its bullshit ! The same jackasses who have Ricky Nelson in, and Rush on the outs. Yup, thats credible ? Is it a little clearer now. I really do appreciate your passion on this subject Tick, I just think your views are a little off IMO. I really respect your opinions here, but I think you're letting your dislike for Metallica get the best of you in this case. There is a huge difference between bands that you want to get in or (don't want to get in) AND who actually deserves to get in. If I was judging who should get in or not based purely on my personal tastes, big-time bands like Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones would NEVER make it into the Hall IMO. I'm not really a fan of either band, BUT I would look like a complete ass if I said they didn't deserve to get in. How could they not? Both have lasted 30+ years, have sold massive amounts of records, sold-out many tours (even to this day), and probably had a huge hand in influencing a number of bands over the years. Also...and I say this as a HUGE KISS fan, all your talk about Metallica being "attention whores", and then following up with how KISS is NOT like that?! Seriously? Who currently has their own family reality series? Oh yeah, GENE SIMMONS. Also, who SELLS their name on EVERY single possible thing out there (ie. Tombstones, Condoms, etc)? Again, I believe it's KISS. You may not think of them as "sellouts" musically, but no band has done more to put themselves "out there" in the media spotlight, and NO musician is more of an "attention whore" than Mr. Simmons.
  22. QUOTE (PuppetKing2112 @ Apr 7 2009, 02:24 AM) I don't know anybody who listens to Load or Reload. For the record, I think those two albums are somewhat underrated and have quite a bit of solid material between them. But that's my personal view, and it's completely irrelevant to this discussion. Well, you know one right here. I'm one of those 'crazy' Metallica fans who actually enjoys those albums alot. Like I said earlier, I'd be willing to hold 'Bleeding Me' and 'The Outlaw Torn' up beside some of their best stuff. I also obviously agree with your second point. I think both albums bring alot of good material to the table. I think there is some obvious filler on each of the albums, but overall, if you take all of the strongest songs from both albums, you could make one hell of a great album IMO. Let's see: 1) Ain't My Bitch 2) Fuel 3) The Memory Remains 4) Until It Sleeps 5) The Unforgiven II 6) King Nothing 7) Bleeding Me 8) Carpe Diem Baby 9) Wasting My Hate 10) Prince Charming 11) Low Man's Lyric 12) The Thorn Within 13) Attitude 14) Fixxxer 15) The Outlaw Torn Maybe they could call it FULLY LOADED?!?
  23. See...I don't know. Maybe I'm completely alone in this one, but how come people hate Load/ReLoad so much? Seriously...I need to know. I understand that they are in no way, as heavy or "thrash" as their first 4 albums, but still...with that aside, you guys can't find one good track on either of them? To me...LOAD is still great. Maybe because it was the first Metallica album that I heard?! Sure, it has a few filler tracks on it, but the standouts more than make up for it. BLEEDING ME and THE OUTLAW TORN are both outstanding pieces of work IMO. They are heavy, epic, and demonstrate some excellent songwriting from the band. Heck, the lyrics are GREAT on these songs. I don't talk about St. Anger, as that was the one piece of crap they made in their career. I will never argue that...it's the one Metallica album I don't own, or ever intend to. Maybe I like Death Magnetic BECAUSE I don't care if it's "trash" or sounds like their earlier works. That crap doesn't matter to me. If it's sounds good to my ears, then I'm happy. I never dwell on the past with any band...so long as I love what I'm hearing, I'm happy.
