  1. Funny you say that because the same thing happened to me in front row. Alex was always making eye contact with me so at one point I was yelling "backstage passes"....(I was young haha) and he just started laughing and shrugged his shoulders or something. Then later in the show Geddy came over in front of me and my friend started pointing at the Expos baseball hat I was wearing and Geddy winked at me. Never forget that one! Wasn't Geddy an Expos fan before he was a Blue Jays fan? Seem to recall Warren Cromartie in the Signals credits or something.
  2. As a Rush fan of 33 years or so, I always wanted to meet the band but never did. Can any of you share your stories or personal impressions of meeting the band? I would love to hear even brief encounters in meet and greets and such. A Neil meeting story would be awesome as those are so rare. Edit: I haven't actually met the band, but I have exchanged a few words from the front row on Power Windows tour.

  4. I know right. It's all subjective. If you put all the technical players at the top, people will complain where are the feel/style players and vice versa. I do feel that the early "pioneers" tend to get over-rated just a bit. I find guys like Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and such way too high on these lists, but I can understand why. They were great for their time and they paved the way for those to come.
  5. As a drummer, let me just say Rolling Stones top 100 drummer list was beyond ridiculous. Probably as ridiculous as the guitar player list.

  8. I gouged out my eyes when I first read the stupid threads and posts here. That's why I'm always angry and don't take a blind bit of notice when people ask me to stop. In all fairness, there are tons of stupid threads and posts on every message board I am a member of.......and that is a lot. Comes with the internet unfortunately.

  11. Isn't it funny they were never able to capture that production ever again? MP sounds better than every album that came before or after it. The blu ray HD version thingy is unreal.
  12. SnA would be a fine record to listen to on a trip to West Virginie or something. Backwoods, inbred, folk music:) haha I was so disappointed when that record came out. The teaser we got from Far Cry had me all excited for a return to prog Rush with maybe some keys returning as well, but alas. Irish shanty folk tunes with a Rush twist. ugh!
  13. Force Ten is awesome. Second Nature, Lock and Key, and Turn The Page are the mediocre ones in my book. The first three songs, Prime Mover and Mission are the real quality songs. I find HYF much like SnA. Half of it is really good.....other half.....not so much.
  14. Moving Pictures for me and it's not even close. Look, Hemispheres is a great prog record, but Moving Pictures is the pinnacle and Rush at the top of their game in every area. The only reason a lot of people under -rate it after all these years is that it has been played to death both on radio and on the concert stage. If most people could go back and hear it for the first time again they would be doing cartwheels.

  17. Between Sun and Moon = Alex channeling his inner Billy Gibbons. I think of ZZ Top when I listen to his guitar work on that for some reason. Great song. I would love to hear Neil's take on the lyrics as it seems to be one of the most misunderstood. It's been a while since I analyzed it, but I seem to recall that I thought it was a take on the creative unconscious or universal mind. Kind of similar with what the Police did with Synchronicity. I always thought that the subject was a little strange coming from Neil giving his stance on religion and such. Pye Dubois wrote the lyrics. http://www.cygnus-x1...ounterparts.php Says in the liner notes that Peart also helped. A collaboration. Anybody else got a take on the lyrics to Between Sun and Moon? Can't really make sense of the Why The Sun? line. How does that tie into creative unconscious? Maybe I'm off base and it's just a song about celestial wonder? Also, I wonder if "bonfire lights in the mirror of sky" from Between Sun And Moon is the same thing as "wilderness of mirrors" from Double Agent. Seems to me these two songs are discussing the same subject somewhat. I think I remember reading Neil say something to the effect that Pye was a little more abstract in his writing, and Neil brings order to Pye's disorder. I am guessing this was one of Pye's more impressionistic lyrical offerings, outside of "Force Ten". As to the wilderness of mirrors line, I think it was explained in the tour book for the CP Tour, I would have to dig my tourbook out and refresh my memory. And musically I think this was inspired by The Who, but I see the ZZ Top thing too. Thanks! I looked up the CP Tourbook and here is a quote from Neil: "Wilderness of mirrors" is a phrase from T.S.Eliot's "Gerontion," and was also applied by former CIA counterintelligence chief James Jesus Angleton to describe the world of espionage-hence the twist on "Double Agent," reflecting the clandestine workings of dreams and the subconcious. Disinformation or intelligence? Let the mirror decide. Reflections in a wilderness of mirrors; a kind of theme. Not reflections in the conventional sense of looking back -- certainly one can also reflect upon the present and future -- but more in holding a mirror up to our hidden selves, to human nature and its doings in the world, and to the tradgedies and inspirations of everyday life. Heavy stuff, I suppose, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun with it! That's the secret, if there is one. Looks like my interpretation of the lyrics was pretty darn close. The secret workings of the subconscious mind.
  18. Grace is overrated imo. The other 4 and Snakes or Hemis are my top 5. Hemis>Signals what a f***ing run. I like Snakes myself. Better than anything that came before it all the way back to, and maybe including, GUP. Yep. I enjoy most of it quite a bit. CA is a giant compared to it. On Snakes the songwriting is tighter, and the sound is great. I hope Nick produces their last album CA has too many tracks for me that blend in together. Snakes each song is distinct from one another. Lyrically its better too. The concept in CA is very thin to me. In fact if I didn't already know it was a concept album I wouldnt think rhe songs thematically related. I can appreciate that, but disagree on the "blending" part. To me, each song is distinct, but I respect your take. In terms of a concept, I've could give a rip about it. I want badass songs Ill say this, SCOG and Halo effect are two of my favorites. In fact they seem so maligned ill vote those as two more underrated songs. They're both great. SCoG is a rocker, and Halo Effect's lyrics are actually pretty moving. When I hear SCOG I remind myself that when i hit 60, my life ain't over. Ged defies age on that puppy The reason I love CA, and Snakes, is they're both guitar albums. They rock harder than any album since Signals. Nope. VT is heavier than both. Also, how is Snakes heavy? A few tunes are, but MANY songs feature acoustic guitar parts.
  19. Snakes is way towards the bottom for me. It's about half of a good record. Folk elements are the last thing I want from a Rush record.

  23. There are tons of disposable radio tunes, but The Pass isn't one of them. So in other words, that's not what it means to you. No in other words it may be more of a straight ahead, non prog song by Rush standards, but it is a well crafted song, with great lyrics and a timeless message. Countless people on youtube talk about the goosebumps they get from The Pass. Comparing this song to disposable throwaway Pop music is just wrong. Everybody has the right to their opinion, but I bet 95% would disagree about it being disposable. Slim expressed an opinion (granted, he couched that opinion as if it were fact, but that's just his schtick). The question asked was, what does the song mean to you? Slim said what it meant to him. To suggest he's wrong about that is silly. I didn't mean he was wrong. I did say right in my post everybody has their own opinion, but just that he is in the extreme minority and was hoping he would explain in more detail why this song should be lumped in with mindless, repetitive, bubble gum lyrics, disposable pop tunes. But you also disagreed that "the Pass is a disposable formula radio tune" is not what the song means to you. Remember that? I said, "So in other words, that's not what it means to you", and you disagreed. My bad. I am the thread starter so my thoughts were posted right off the bat.
