Doesn't the g major have a hold / infinite delay? It sound be possible...I know it is with a simple boss dd3...check youtube for "sound on sound" and there was a vid of dd3 doing it.perhaps g major has something similiar...I don't remember exactly.....but yeah, you could have the delay bleed set, and just quickly switch patches to capture the note...I thought it had a infinite delay in presets..but that might have been the nova system.

Should I buy a 4x12 cab or a 2x12 cab?
jdouglas replied to DifferentStrings89's topic in Making Modern Music
No need for 4x12. 2x12 works fine. And if you need more volume just mic it thru the pa. Even alex is down to just 3 2x12 into those crazy steamtrunk amps and the rest is thru the pa. I like the eminence governer. It sounds a little better than v30 to me, and it's louder at 75w or so if you need more from your 2x12. I'm even done with 2x12s. I just have mesa 1x12 with 1x12 cab stacked, and roland 2x10 on wheels. Plenty loud for even outdoors with volumes set to just 5. Much easier to lug around. I'd like me a lonestar 2x12 on wheels though. -
Guitar Players: GAS early warning - new Lerxst axe

The man has a good point, most of the sig series nowadays are just pickup changes on a guitar that's been around for years (here a bridge upgrade); but the intangable is it is still pretty cool. The 355 was special cause that guitar made some of the best music, can't say same for acxess. But if you are in the market for new guitar anyway, and have the dough, why not. The 355 has held its value well (as I've been unable to score a cheap used one) so maybe the acxess will as well, and then the risk of depreciation is reduced. Clapton has a fender sig series with huge production every year on basically a strat with a boost, and he has a sig 335 and martin acoustic. Even taylor swift has a sig taylor (just ask my neice). Timmons was gonna leave ibanez, then magically he signed and annouce a 3rd sig model...it's just business now. -

QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Apr 20 2011, 09:52 PM) QUOTE (jdouglas @ Apr 20 2011, 10:41 PM) Yeah, 1001 I think the piezo techno is still a WIP, and the probably will be for still a few more years. It's getting there, maybe 90% or so, but it's not perfect yet. I'll tell you one thing, though...listening to a clip on YouTube of "Presto" from a recent Rush show, the piezo in Alex's red LP sounded real good. I actually thought the opposite the 2x I saw them last tour, but I think it was more the lack of eq on it or somethin...just sounded sterile to me...especially the unwound strings. but when his prs crapped out and he played time stand still on the tele, man was that rockin. And I don't even care for that song much. Yup, a RI big Al tele for $1200, i'd total get one of those. ;p -
electronic vs acoustic drums for classic rock?
jdouglas replied to the masked drummer's topic in Making Modern Music
Funny that I'm probably 20 years younger than Kiss. If it's too loud its muddy, the notes become inaudiable, and people move to opposite end of the bar. Yes, I'm aware of the sweet profess pack with 50 probably awesome neil sets, totally worth $40 or whatever, but I'm the guitar player and have my own gear to jones for.....can't someone send me just one set for a td 12 that is great for neil (doesn't have to be even from that pack, just a user created one maybe)? Or how about posting some settings that he can just tweak (start with preset maybe)? If someone asked me for an alex setting I could email them a file, or at least get them close with the right od, chorus, delay settings etc. -
electronic vs acoustic drums for classic rock?
jdouglas replied to the masked drummer's topic in Making Modern Music
I prefer the flexibility of the roland kits. Acoustic drums in the hands of most rock drummers usually equals "too loud" for most situations imo. Btw, does anyone have a professor set in their brain (or any sweet set really)? Can you email me the file with ez instuctions on how to upload it? I'd love to give my drummer a sweet ass neil set from PW or MP etc that you rush drummers have perfected. Pm me if possible. Think he has the td12. -

Very nice looking geetars there vital signs. The signed one is pretty sweet, if not uneconomically, but now that you have it the pain of writing the check is over. Ha. Yeah, 1001 I think the piezo techno is still a WIP, and the probably will be for still a few more years. It's getting there, maybe 90% or so, but it's not perfect yet. So a $10 push pull pot fixes the problem on a $4k guitar? Figures. I was thinking a push pull pot or one of those cool 6 way stew mac toggles would be great on my 339 (and prob the al's too) but I think the classic 57s are 2 wires not 4 correct? I think the 6 way needs 4 wire hbs. Oh well, just a thought, I'm not really prepared to mod a brand new guitar anyway. Yet. ;p -

jdouglas replied to tskidmore's topic in Making Modern Music
That sucks. I wonder if that leads to the "still no guitar" problem with piezo? ;p Yup, pretty much confirms the qc on the 5k guitars is same as 2k ones (why I bought the 339). Of course, the al has many more bells and whistles. I'm sure they will fix the wiring though, lifetime warranty and all, so no worries. It is just a bummer when a new guitar is not near perfect, ebay is full of non perfect guitars (I have many myself), so the joy of buying new is lessened. Anyway, enough of the downer, great scores on the als, and get those pics up please. I'd like to see the signed one for sure. -

QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Mar 30 2011, 01:46 AM) QUOTE (CygnusX-1Bk2 @ Mar 30 2011, 02:35 AM) Ha! Great minds think alike! I have been using Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms for years, at least 10 or more. More thickness, more tension, more tone! Stevie Ray used to play .013 E strings, but he tuned to Eb. I payed with a guy who used .012's. After playing bass more regularly the heavier bottom strings feel more natural to me now. I tried the 10-52s on my Strat, but that extra 3/4" of scale length over the LP really made a difference -- didn't like how stiff those gauges felt. Ended up sticking with the Hybrid set 9-46, which on a Strat feels almost the same to me as 10-52s do on my LP. With that in mind, Stevie using 13s on his Strat, even tuned down...what an animal! I've heard srv started with 13s, but used mostly 12s, and by end of his career was down to 11s....but he is still a beast. I just looked, I only have d'addario 10-46, so not that much different then 9s I guess really. I like the slinky 10 tops but the A string is not good for me. Guess I'm not a beast, ha. -

AL57 is pretty badazz. Is it heavy? How does it play next to your other 2 gibsons. I like the hrf better than 339, but new is fun. Nice to play. I'd like it better if middle position was both hb in series and it had a spilt coil (for the current middle sound) but that is just a nice to have. -

QUOTE (tskidmore @ Mar 16 2011, 10:02 AM) Have you seen the video of Big Al on musicians friend hamming it up with the guitar? http://backstage.musiciansfriend.com/media..._Gibson_LesPaul I hear you guys on the cost and all on this- personally even though I paid less for it, I am more afraid of my vintage HRF than I will be with the AL Axcess. I'm kind of with Al on the utility of this guitar with the floyd, the piezo, and the coil switching. And it doesnt cost too much more than the standard axcess, which is the guitar I play the most right now. I have a tracking number for mine- should be here this Friday! I want pics by Saturday then. Right out of the box, 10meg resolution, not crappy phone pics like I post....and close up too like wacky gonzo porn close. Haha. Guitar porn. -

QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Mar 15 2011, 03:30 PM) QUOTE (CygnusX-1Bk2 @ Mar 15 2011, 04:06 PM) Guitar Center is pushing the new Axcess on their web page. 4 granny is too much for any guitar made before 1962. Period. Agreed. As cool as the Axess is, it's not worth that kind of money. But that's been Gibson's thing lately -- jack the price up on their premium guitars because they think the name alone makes it worth the exorbitant price. And I don't think the QC is any better on the $4k ones vs. the less than $2k ones. Together my HRF, 339, and one of my american dxl strats is still less than or at $4k. Nothing against big al, they sell out for sure, so the demand is there, I just can't do it. Plus I like player's guitars because I'll do something stupid to it sooner or later. -

QUOTE (CygnusX-1Bk2 @ Mar 14 2011, 06:02 PM) I have two friends with 339s and I have played a handful of them. The body is much more accommodating than the full size without giving up any tone. It has that 335 sound. When A-B'd next to my Les Paul Standard through my Fender Deluxe you could really hear the difference between solid and semi hollow in the tone. More pronounced lower mids in the semi hollow. They and all ES models have the "Classic '57" humbuckers, which are based on the classic PAFs from the 50's. Except for the Lucille models which have 490R and 490T pickups, which are based on the classic PAFs from the 50's. Oh, and the ES 137 has a 490R and a 498T instead of the 490T. The 498T is also based on the classic PAFs from the 50's. Whereas Les Pauls can come with either '57 Classics, the 490 series (including the 98), or the BurstBucker variants (1, 2, 3 and/or Pro) which are all based on PAFs from the 50's. Gibson also makes Ceramic humbuckers, "Dirty Fingers", Angus Young and Tony Iommi model humbuckers which are based on hot rodded/modified versions of PAFs from the 50's. Seriously though the variants on these are fairly subtle, like magnet composition or windings, etc. I will point out that ALL of the top of the line models have the Classic 57's it seems. Interestingly they are not the most expensive Gibson pickup, but I suspect the most faithful, despite the inconsistencies of the specs from guitars made in the 50's. I guess what I am not saying very well is that the 339 is a fine piece and I would get one myself when budget and opportunity allow. Yup, I have the 57+ in my 96 black strat with tx specials, that's a nice combo. I listed the 1979 marshall on craigslist too (if anyone is interested). It's all original. I'm just more of a mesa guy these days, and so it gets very little use, plus its heavy as all hell. Ha. ;p. -

QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Mar 13 2011, 06:07 PM) ^^^ That a 339? I've been meaning to try one out for a while now. You have it in your possession yet? Thanks guys....si, been wanting a 339 for while too. Lands on Thursday. GC was matching a sale Sam Ash was having, so the price was pretty low to pass on (plus my new bass player is mgr there). It's in their platuim showroom (so that is the actual pic of one I get), I thought about the white "alex like" one, but the vintage sunburst is just too cool. I think it has same pus as the al-355. Should be fun to play. And I did sell over 1500 of stuff on ebay this week to fund it.....so far it has all worked out well. I love al, but his guitars are clearly out of my league $ wise. -

My cover of the Hemispheres guitar solo
jdouglas replied to Ted Barchetta's topic in Exercises in Self-Indulgence
Keep working at it, you will get smoother with practice. Don't forget the pick slides too, I haven't played that solo in years but I remember it used a lot of neck real estate. Love the tele, not a fan of the amp distortion though, kinda marshall MG w small speaker sounding...but could be the camera mic as well. Anyway, good work, and nice song choice. -

Congrats tskidmore and elvt. I hope they sound as good as big al's. I'm still hunting a 339, maybe I'll ship it to pete to put a floyd in it. Ha. ;p I'm tying to stay displined with spending on equipment, sell stuff before buying other stuff etc. It can get out of control quickly. It is tempting cause my new bass player is a mgr at guitar center, so a potential discount could swing my decision. Must stay disaplined. -
I 've had 2 sets of analog bass pedals from the 70s, since I don't understand midi for crap (although I did have a fcb10101 setup into a g major for a bit). Anyway, olde school analog pedals can be found for less than 300. They usually come with a few sounds, some taurusy some just bass notes; but you can always run them though a multeffect to get the sweep, octaver, wah, and res q, for bit of a taurus sound.

QUOTE (elvtnedge @ Jan 18 2011, 06:33 PM) Alex and gibson agreed 300 non signed guitars a year for 5 years so 1500 in total. Canada is getting 10 of the 50 signed guitars.. 5 of each colour. the signature will be on the back of the headstock Ok, so let's do the math. Gibson gets 1500 x 4000 = $6m Big al gets 250 signatures x 2000 = $500k, and he probably gets a few free ones to give away to family, friends, staff etc. And lastly for tskidmore 1 AL355 + 1 AL Axcess = 1 Angry Wifey. -

QUOTE (tskidmore @ Jan 1 2011, 09:47 PM) Jdouglas- Can always count on a vintage HRF bringing you out! How you been? You're obviously still digging your HRF. Coming up on a year with my 1980 HRF, and I am still loving it- my LP Axcess is the go-to axe these days, but the HRF is always nearby. One of you TRFr's needs to pick this one up so we can keep em in the family. Anybody have any idea on the production numbers on these old ones, they dont seem to come available more than 1-2 per year. Good tskidmore, how u been? I just moved a few towns over so I've been off grid until I get the net up and running again, just been busy with holidays, job, etc. Yes, still loving it. I just restrung it this morning and played it at practice this afternoon, which is rare cause the strats are always just easier to throw in the car. My band calls it "gibby" and it get a norm from cheers yell whenevr I bring it. Ha. I'd like to sell some mid level gear and get a 339 this year, sorta thin out the count some. How's the AL doing? You playing it through the switchblade or triamp? I forget which?? What town are you in again? I'll have to remember it if I'm ever in your area traveling so I can see your rig in person. I was just sorta near pete for a week in new albany ohio, didn't have car there though. I think I emailed gibson asking how many hrf1 were made after one of the guys on ebay said his was one of only 300. I think he was reading the serial incorrectly, and gibson wrote me back saying there records didn't go back that far.....I think. Maybe ask on the gibson forum, someone their should know. I'm guessing maybe 500-1000 per year?? Peace
