I feel like I covered both interpretations. If I'm basing my rating on the inherent quality of the song without any external context, than Closer to the Heart rises. But if I hear a great song 3000 times, then I want to hear another good song more. And like I said, I rated the songs based on how much I want to hear it vs the other available songs In all honesty I'm just assuming the reason every single constantly played radio song has dropped over the years is for that reason. But for whatever reason, on the day I made these ratings, Closer to the Heart was a song I wanted to hear slightly more than the one under it, and sightly less than the one above it.

I created a ranking of songs based on whether, all things being equal, I would chose song 'A' or song 'B' to listen to. As I can replay every single note from heavily played songs in my head, they are less likely to be chosen by me to listen to at any given moment than they otherwise would be. So they drop in the ranking. If I were creating a more objective (is that possible?) list of 'best/important' songs, the list would be vastly different. I'd have In the Mood a hell of a lot higher, Red Barchetta would be top 40 even though I like dozens of songs better, and I'd have all the hits higher than I currently do. Tom Sawyer would be number one. That's not this list. But I get your point. And it's true that Closer would be much higher if I made my list your way. EDIT: I should add that for whatever reason the overplayed songs on the radio seems to make a weird difference for me versus overplayed by me. If I were a radio, then my top songs would certainly be horribly overplayed. No idea why that makes a difference.

So I know it's great, but I have so many ahead of it now. Probably first Rush song I memorized. Marathon builds beautifully, but nevertheless it's a middle song for me. Cold Fire rocks, but the lyrics keep it in the middle. It's clever, I'm not knocking his writing. I just get bored with most relationship songs. New World Man, like Closer, was ubiquitous on the radio, so it suffers. Possibly the first song I memorized after Tom Sawyer and Closer to the Heart, though. Passage used to be my second favorite off 2112, and I played it constantly. But it's so silly. I can't move it further up.

Well, now you've done it! Actually your opinion seems to be common. Kid Gloves is only okay or outright disliked by so many. It's in my top 5. Overall. Out of every Rush song. I don't know why I love it so much, but like I said. I'm an outlier here. Same goes for Countdown. But it's only top 35. Body Electric is top 45. I'm fine with where you have Halo Effect. And Lakeside Park is bottom 25 for me- so we differ the other way there.

An incredibly silly set up, but to their credit their is zero attempt to make it seem plausible. The point is to have fun, and do they ever! Term has gifted us Tribbles, while cultures built off of stereotypical mob gangsters, ok corral shootouts, etc. All contrivances for a fun episode. I loved everything about this episode. Best song: Chapel. Runners up: Kirk/Una duet Some sad songs, great voices, and funny moments. Quibble: please let Ortegas do something.

Permanent Waves finally loses a track, and odes it one more by losing two. I really like both songs, every single song I really like now. These have always been neck and neck so it's appropriate they're back to back. Power Windows loses a second song, the last place holder for most fans. That was true for me at one time, too. But it's actually a great song. Snakes and Vapor both lost two more. Looks like the end point for some of these albums will happen fairly soon. Not much to say, really. I doubt I killed anyone's favorite.

Unpopular opinion... Starting now: Tears is probably the most boring song they ever wrote. And yet I like Rivendell. So what do I know. :)

The instrumentals, but none are YYZ or La Villa, so no argument. I really like Making Memories, but this is correct. It's simple, but so nice. The Necromancer drags, and I might agree, but come on. That work Alex does is phenomenal. Much higher on that alone. It's really enough to save the whole thing

You said you had some troubling information for us. You were right! Manhattan Project is a great song, building to one of my all time favorite moments. Way too low

Anthem used to be my favorite off Fly By Night. It's not just maturity making the overall impact of the message weaken, it's also the fact that every mix tape/cd I made of Rush way back when had Anthem. It's overplayed. Tom Sawyer will really feel that effect. It's not even top 4 off moving pictures for me. It used to be top rush overall decades ago. Slightly over played. Spirit of Radio and Closer to the Heart are also affected.

A lot here would change right now. I know these change day to day, but the day I did this list doesn't match me today much at all. We tap into Power Windows for the first time with Mystic. Initially my favorite track off that album and it's star has really fallen. I think the effects that first drew me in don't work on me anymore. Still a good song, but last off that album. But it's better than a few I have higher, at least in my opinion today. I have the Pass a little better. It's never been a big favorite like for so many. It's good, but just middling good. Lock and Key, Hand Over Fist, Open Secrets, War Paint, Wish Them Well are all average Rush songs for me. Normally I'd put Mystic above all of them. Losing It I like much better than this, so I don't know what I was on about the day I did this list. Maybe I'd listened to it too much around that time. MMB is an instrumental. It's excellent, and sometimes it's higher just because S&A has problems, but most instrumentals fall below lyrical work.

I look forward to catching up to you, I'm out of town so I don't have access to my lists. Until then, I will say Before and After is way too high, Chain Lightning is way too low, And Fountain is fantastic. I love how each part of that song of another stage in life. Especially the humor in how teens are portrayed with Didacts and Narpets, and most of all the very early adulthood of No On at The Bridge. But no hate, this had been a lot of fun!

Wish them Well is of course great. Every Clockwork 'real' song is great. That whole album is the best since the mid 80's at least. I took great for killing off Caravan first (bu2b2 doesn't count), but something has to be first. No bad track. I am fine with you eliminating good songs now. That should be all you have left.

It was also my brother's favorite, at least back in the 80's. No idea now. I'm not saying that effected me, but who knows. We're opposites in every way, so maybe his love for it left me no choice. :)

The third of three critical songs off Snakes. They are each eminently listenable, and really help counter the albums weaknesses. I really don't like how the vocals were done on this album (or on Vapor Trails). The instrumentals made the album stronger than it might have been. Hope I dropped only because it excised Geddy and Neil. TMMB is just barely in my top 100, and MalNar is in my top 80.

I have Armor and Sword in almost exactly the same place, it has a lot going for it but it never really kicks in. It needed to build in to something more instead of leveling off.

No worries. I'm just kidding with my objections to others. My reasons are my reasons, but it's not a right or wrong thing. I'm the guy who just removed Red Barchetta, I can't throw stones.

My fault- if we do this again it will change. Chemistry has also risen inexplicably. It's not that good. It will drop. Looking back I've placed several songs lower than Chemistry. That's just wrong. Where's My Thing is a great song. But it's not YYZ or La Villa, and instrumentals have to be much better than this to go higher. Show Don't Tell one I got right. It's a middle song deserving of a middle spot.

You're absolutely correct that you made a mistake with Digital Man. :) Songs not called Working Man from that first album just can't be this high. There's no room with all the superior songs. Need Some Love might rock, but anyone placing this anywhere outside the bottom 20 loses me when they complain about lyrics. Not saying that's you, just saying I have no time for Dog Year lyrical disdain when accompanied by affection for Need Some Love. Madrigal is a fine sedative, I'm assuming you've placed it so high because of its usefulness as a sleep aid. I used to have Nobody's Hero a lot higher than I do now, but it still hovers around the middle, I assume. I haven't checked my list yet, so I'm just guessing.

Time and Armor are both middling songs placed in the middle- I like them and I could readily interchange them with a couple dozen songs up or down. Hope is a very nice instrumental, but it's barely a Rush song with the essential absence of Neil and Geddy. It's this high because I really like it a lot. It's this low because it's lyric-less, Geddy-less, and Neil-less. Roll the Bones is a terrific song that would be much much higher if not for the rap. I like that they tried rap, I applaud artists taking inspiration from every facet of human creativity. It's good to grow, even necessary. But the lyrics in the rap sound painfully like a 40 year old police officer going undercover in high school as a "cool kid" showing the other kids how cool it is to stay in school and stay away from drugs. It's Michael Scott relating to the youth. Go ahead and rap, but do it in your own voice.

Territories is the best song off Power Windows and 21st on my overall list. Sometimes it cracks the top ten. It's the song that at 15 summed up my idealistic view point on my world view. So it's meaningful to me. Cut to the Chase is the best song off Counterparts. It's risen over the years to get there. I have it 36th overall. Totem's in my bottom 30 and Red Lenses is in my bottom 20, so if anything you let them live too long. I have Alien Shore a lot higher, but it's not top 60 even, so no complaints there. None of this round of 5 lies anywhere near where I have them. I expect a lot of hate for one of my recent five songs as well.

But they still throw those first album songs up high. That says more about our expectations of Neil than it does about the lyrics themselves. In any event, the music here is good enough to raise it. The lyrics keep it in the bottom half, though. Bravado, The Garden, Halo Effect, and Presto are all simply nice songs. Music is nice, lyrics meaningful. Honestly the songs aren't higher because the music doesn't lift them for me. Middle of the pack Rush songs are still great songs. They readily shift 20-30 spots higher or lower with the songs around them on any given day.

Very nice instrumental track. It's 109th on my list, virtually the same, actually exactly the same since you have two feedback songs left. Take them out and this was 109th for you as well. If I rate these again it will probably drop, since I do like words and this isn't La Villa Strangiato. But right now there can be no argument from me.

It's no slight on Caravan- I absolutely love that entire album. But I'm in the zone where I like all the songs, and as Clockwork goes I like all the others more. 3 Clockwork tracks are in my top 40, of which 2 are top 20 and 1 is actually 4th overall.
