  1. According to SFX, Universal have got the rights to Alfred Bester's classic 1955 novel. A quick primer: Gully Foyle is the last remaining survivor of the Nomad, a merchant spaceship attacked in the war with the Outer Satellites and left drifting in space. Seeing a spacecraft named Vorga, he rejoices thinking he will be saved. The Vorga however passes him by, leaving him to die. This callousness triggers a consuming rage in Foyle that transforms him. Vengeance becomes his mission. Jury-rigging a repair to Nomad's engine, Foyle crashes onto an asteroid covered with the wreckage of other crashed ships and inhabited by the offspring of the wrecks' marooned crews. These odd descendants, dubbed the Scientific People, tattoo a Maori-style mask onto Foyle's face. I've not read the book myself (its on my to read list, I just haven't got around to it yet) but, if done right, looks like it could be good.
  2. managed to get hold of Ringers last night and took these two screen caps: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a222/jazzbass2112/alphaville/Ringers/ringers002.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a222/jazzbass2112/alphaville/Ringers/ringers001.jpg. Geddy talks about being a fan of the book and how he's reading it to his daughter as well as talking about Rivendell. You also get brief snippets of Rivendell and Spirit of Radio. The film itself isn't too bad considering it was a low budget effort. Some of the fans are a little irritating (particularly the overly gushing fangirls - even my cringed at them and she's a fangirl herself ). The celebrity interviews are good as are the cast/crew ones. Best of all are the interviews with Brian Sibley, who wrote the Movie Guide. He walks a good balance between being a fan and a critic. Its worth a look if you're into LotR.

QUOTE (2112-Rob-2112 @ Mar 19 2006, 07:32 AM) QUOTE (JohnnyBlaze @ Mar 19 2006, 02:01 AM) QUOTE (2112-Rob-2112 @ Mar 19 2006, 02:21 PM)only movie of his i had to turn off..was once upon a time in mexico..it wasnt beacuse of him..i thought he made that movie halfway decent..but if it wasnt for him that movie wouldof been even more horrible then it already was..and when i turn off movies in the middle thats a bad sign..beacuse i usually never do that. I've only walked out of the theater once before and it was a Depp movie....CRY BABY. It was horrible. I think we didn't even stay for half. Other than that I'm hard pressed to think of any other Depp movie I DIDN'T like. However, I refuse to see Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. I think I'd compare it (& him) too much to Willie Wonka & Gene Wilder. yea its not as good as the first..but its still good...if depp can play willy wonka i think he can pretty much play anything. Personally, I think that the new version far outstrips the original. The original was so sugary that I can almost feel my teeth rotting as I'm watching (and the less said about 'Cheer Up Charlie' and 'The Candyman Can' the better). Tim Burton, on the other hand, brought a slightly twisted edge which I think even Roald Dahl would have approved of (and he despised the original).

  20. Excuse me for being lazy, but I'm just going to post the comments I made on War of the Worlds from my (under construction) SF/Fantasy site Alphaville2001. (I should point out that this review is from someone who is a big fan the original H G Wells novel, the original film but is not particularly a big fan of Tom Cruise or Steven Spielberg.) QUOTE (Alphaville2001) Even while I was writing the synopsis above, I was struck by how truly awful the premise of this version was. The plots holes I must confess that, when I heard about this film, I had many deep misgivings - all of which were justified. I really do think that this is the worst adaptation of Wells' novel (and I do include the TV series). To me, the film was trite, predictable and overly sentimental. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise and the best thing that can be said about him is that he's not Keanu Reeves. Justin Chatwin is a typical annoying American teenager that only seems to exist in films of this sort. Dakota Fanning seemed to show signs of rising above all this but is hampered by the fact that she is given to do is scream and whine. Miranda Otto is wasted as she is merely there to show how abysmal Cruise's character is as a father. The acting honours go, not unexpectedly, to Tim Robbins but he is hampered by playing a part rather than a character. However, the film is visually stunning. As a long time fan of H G Wells, it was nice to actually see a reasonable depiction of the tripods. The visual effects are everything you would expect from Spielberg when he has a large budget to play with. Unfortunately, this does not stop the film from being dull and rushed. As a Wells fan, I'm still waiting for a version to match up to Jeff Wayne's musical adaptation.
