  1. Would you settle for a medley? Not saying I would—just when you're into it they go and change songs!

    Rush FAQ new book

Im reading now. It is a light ready. I have already learned a few facts I did not know!! ? I believe they meant a light read. It's illuminating.
  3. Without Panacea, maybe! I love Bacchus Plateau, though. :o Uh-oh. That's all right. I don't take it seriously and honestly think it is funny. We are all so different. Having Xanadu in common makes up for any differences, anyway. And there are probably many more. What about Different Strings (the song, I mean, not our differences of opinion)?

  5. Nothing more depressing than a drum set sitting in a museum or warehouse, not being played. Actually, there are tons of things more depressing than that, but it's still pretty damned depressing.
  6. The song? or the experience? I agree with you if it's the latter. No. The former. And why should the fact that you don't like the song disturb me who does like it? You know, I think I'll listen to it right now. Maybe I'll come around. I'm listening to it right now myself. Okay, well, that happened. It's a lovely little tune, I guess, and I can appreciate it on the basis of certain criteria that I don't apply to the rest of the songs on the album, or what I'd like to hear live. That's convoluted, I know, but I'm trying to be not too critical (I like how you're getting me to take responsibility for my opinions!). At any rate, I sort of zoned out, but I did manage to focus on some things. The riff is totally Alex, no doubt about it. Geddy's funking out on the bass a bit (in a slow, sleepy sort of way, if that makes sense). But I did zone out. Double Agent brought me back, got the blood flowing again.

  9. Animate - meh. Stick it Out - bit o' life there. I'm not as fond of it as I once was. Cut to the Chase - still dig it. Cool solo Nobody's Hero - mmmm...no. Between Sun & Moon - there's the Rush Alien Shore - I like it except for how he sings "Shore" (Show-whore, it sounds like, to me) The Speed of Love - don't even get me started Double Agent - different but cool. Nice and heavy Leave That Thing Alone - still growing on me, at a steady but can't-be-denied pace Cold Fire - bit o' life there, too, but a bit in-your-face Everyday Glory - one of the infamous group of does-nuthin' closing songs that I can barely even remember
  10. Not much—unless you're talking La Villa Strangiato... Is that Xanadu the one with the rippling water superimposed over the beginning bit? Yes, and Geddy with his full length kimono and beautiful boots. Oh, those were the days! How I miss them. Is that on Chronicles? Or the R30? D'uh, I guess I could just get off my lazy ass and check for myself.
  11. I'm going to skip it. I've read much more interesting stuff on this forum than in any of the clips I've seen of that video.

  13. lol it was the 80's man.....no one looked good, IMO. Mick That's the "Daniel Boone" era Geddy lid, right?
  14. My eyes would be dry to. Never once has this song ever got me choked up or teary eyed. It's a good song, though highly overrated by many on here and it was just be a complete downer as the show closer. It makes sense as the album closer but as a show closer it will put everyone to sleep just like it did on the last tour. It didn't put me to sleep. I was mesmerized by the screens and the projections. Plus, my wife was right beside me, thoroughly digging it.
  15. I'll have to sign off soon—my band is playing a gig tonight in Hamilton. We don't play any Rush songs, but sometimes I'll throw in a signature Rush riff at the end of a song (something like Cygnus X-1). Any suggestions?
  16. How weird is that. I'm watching Clockwork Angels right now, and the song is Grand Designs. The next song is Body Electric...I'll give it a close listen. Okay...not bad, not bad! Geddy sounds a bit like an opera singer during the 1-0-0-1 bit (how he extends each "one"...), and there is a little boo-boo there before the solo, but I think the song works well live. For the most part, live Geddy sounds much like album Geddy.

  18. And then, instead of Neil and Alex running off and leaving Geddy to say "bye-bye", they should all come forward and take a bow! :) That doesn't work for Neil. He's got to get the hell out of there and back on his bike, and not have to deal with those pesky fans!
  19. And no skipping over the long intro and no cutting verses allowed!
  20. I'll have a listen right now. In that song, the highest notes as far as I know are when he sings "cell of awareness, imperfect and incomplete"--if he can pull that off without fraying people's nerves too much, he's doing great! In Freewill (Time Machine Tour) I think Geddy does a good job—he changes the line "you still have made a choice" to save his voice from the high note, which is definitely forgiveable. The "Each of us, a cell of awareness" bit I think he pulls off quite well—you can tell it's a bit of a struggle, but he does it, and you can hear the crowd roar its appreciation. (I remember that at the Hamilton show my friends and I grinned like idiots at each other). I think if he were to change that bit too much, it would be disappointing, so I appreciate that he makes the effort. Now, in the same show, he sings Time Stand Still, which I don't think works that well (listen to his lines after Aimee Mann's part, and to "Freeze this moment a little bit longer")--I don't think he quite nails those bits—it's not terrible, but it hurts my heart a bit. Update: it gets better as the song progresses!

  22. I wondered what you meant there, too. I agree that Geddy is struggling a bit. I would actually rather he change the parts a bit rather than push so hard. Sometimes his voice cracks a bit at the start of a line, and I think if he'd just pull back a bit it might sound better. But I'm no expert (and have a terrible singing voice myself!). I love it when Geddy sings but I do have to admit I've always wondered why he doesn't tone it down a notch. I don't think he can sing any lower than he is already. As it is, he had already toned it down more than a few notches. No when he's live he does push really hard and try to hit those notes when you can tell he'd be able to go lower. I'd rather he didn't push so hard to hit them and just save his voice. I'm certain he knows he just can't do it anymore, as much as he (and us) would like to be able to. I don't know if it was on account of the fact that he was tired (since it was an encore song) or if it is representative of how he sings it now, but when I listened to Tom Sawyer on CA Tour DVD - he is singing that quite low. Gangster, do you remember if he sang it like that when you saw all those times last tour? It's in the same key, but Geddy is changing a few of the notes: for example, when he sings "what you say about society," he's not singing the high E note on "what"--he's singing that note an octave lower. That's pretty significant! However, most of the song is pretty much the same. Later on, he pulls it off.
  23. For some songs, maybe, but for songs like Red Barchetta, which are in the original key (I believe), he's really pushing hard. Actually, I don't know what the solution is, because people want to hear what they expect to hear, I guess.

    Rush FAQ new book

The guy is a harsh critic. I'd cut the book a bit of slack. I also raised my eyebrows when the author claimed that some of the 70s videos were just mimed (Circumstances and La Villa are clearly not), but I generally thought the book was okay. It's not a history book, after all. It's a dude who loves Rush writing about Rush, and mostly he does it with heart.
