  1. BTW, this slipped by me and maybe a few of you, but Roger Waters latest piece of work, a 3 piece opera named Ca Ira, was released last week.
  2. QUOTE (anagramking @ Oct 12 2005, 10:15 AM) As I said before, I've usually had discussions about Nirvana with people that did not like Rush. But here, I got to hear from Rush fans, and that's cool. Damn, I understand that they changed it. I get it. But do you guys like the changes that happened? Is it good that soloing is frowned upon today? I agree that soloing for the sake of soloing is silly, but to not really have much, if any, of it at all, that's another story. Test, I never said I knew why he did what he did. But he wanted that aura reserved for the prematurely dead, and even alluded to it in interviews. That indicates planned and twisted, I think. One doesn't need to be a shrink to see that part. To understand the other stuff, a degree would probably help a lot, of course. And he did admit that Smells Like Teen Spirit was a ripoff of the Pixies, by the way. Many who heard the song for the first time never would have made the connection, becasue they didn't know much about the Pixies, if anything. And that's where this "revolution" exploded, off this one pilfered track. One would hope he cut the Pixies in on the proceeds, but I doubt it. As for music for the boomers, that's an entirely different thread. I just made the observation of what a lot of them went through in the bad times of the late 80s to mid 90s, in response to what you had said about them earlier. But what I figured I wanted to listen to, back in the 80s, was stuff like Rush. Grunge seemed so incongruous with what Rush (and prog) was about, and I wasn't going to get into it, no matter how popular it got, and no matter how much the musical landscape was changed by it. Personally I do enjoy the depressive nature that the music brought out. I was never the biggest Nirvana fan, but Nirvana did open the doors for a lot of bands to incorperate that style into their repetoire. It is a lot easier for me to connect to music that more resembles the way I feel, and a lot of the times, that gloomy, depressive sound really speaks volumes. If you dig deep enough, there is a lot of incredibly beautiful, albiet depressive music out there, a key example could be Still by Nine Inch Nails, which is probably the one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life. Though thats a different topic. While Nirvana's sound may not be my personal favorite among the artists in that era, they get some respect from me for allowing artists who followed the chance to add that sound and become big enough to continue to make music.
  3. TONIGHT ITS LCD SOUNDSYSTEM I saw them back in May, and it was seriously the best show I have seen all year. I cant wait for tonight.
  4. The Nirvana conversation was moved to its own thread
  5. The Nirvana conversation was going so well, it was decided to split it up into its own topic to get more people involved. You can continue the conversation here... http://www.therushforum.com/index.php?showtopic=10763
  6. I dont think Nirvana itself was BS at all, it was a new style of music that definatly had an originality to it not seen before. What was BS though was the countless bands that tried to rip Nirvana's sound for thier own personal gain. There were countless grunge bands that followed in Nirvana's footsteps that gained public recognition that wouldnt have otherwise even been on the radar had it not been for them. Nirvana wasnt BS, they just inspired a great deal of it. Its a little hard now I guess to recognize Nirvana for what they did when you look at what happened in thier wake.
  7. He wasnt the one that changed it persay, he was the one that gained the noteriety of changing it though. Music in general was on the move and his sound just happened to be the sound of what was emerging. What he did though was bring a disinfranchised way of thinking to the mainstream, a way of calling out all the pop music and hair metal on the bs that it was. After Nirvana, people stopped paying attention to hair bands. I had also heard his first attempt involved raping a mentally retarded girl and ODing on herion on a train track, hoping to get run over. That way he wouldnt die a virgin. The train though switched tracks and he was never run over.
  8. The story behind his first suicide attempt is even worse. As a person, I dont think Cobain was that great, but credit has to be given for what he did do to change the musical climate.
  9. A lot of current country is that way. I cannot say what older country was like becaue I havent heard any of it, but most of the new country is just like most of any other kind of popular music coming out today. It's just trying to appeal to as big an audience as they can to sell more records. Now interejecting some personal opinion, I have to go with hip/hop as my least desired musical taste, there is just nothing I get from that. I am so far removed from the whole hip/hop way of thinking that even what is supposed to be good hip/hop does nothing for me. There is still a lot to be said for writing your own music to go along with your words, not just stealing another persons beat and mixing it up a bit.
  10. Music is a constantly growing idea that will never stay put. I am finding it harder as I learn more about music, to say that any form of music is definitivly bad. Sure there are forms that I dislike, but I cannot classify it as being universally bad. As long as anyone gets anything positive from the experience of listening to some kind of music, then I find it impossible to place my name on the validity that it is bad. If I were in a company whose credibility was on the line for my thought, I would be fired for placing my opinions over what is real. Therefore I cannot vote on which form I believe to be the worst. I dont think there is a worst. Every form of music, no matter how much my personal distaste, is in some way valid if it appeals to no one else but the person making it. -- To me, Emo is a new trend in music and in social interactions. It is a way of thinking and acting in todays youth, an analogy to the hippie generation, or generation X can be drawn along the same lines.
  11. Nope, none at all. I was kinda interested in seeing what they were going to do to explain the guy under the tunnel, and that is one weird story. I have to admit I've only seen the new episodes and the last 2 or 3 of the previous season, I fell in the category of people thinking it was a Survivor ripoff. But these new shows are good. I wonder when they will start to explain about the boy, I kinda wanna see that storyline progress.
  12. Santa man dont pontificate with zeal today or in Nevada, fire him to the Queen I say.
  13. Well, tomorrow is a big one, the Download Music Festival is coming to Mountain View. Its gonna start at noon, and will go on till about midnight, there will be a lot of incredible bands there. The lineup includes... The Killers Modest Mouse Arcade Fire The Doves British Sea Power HIM Mindless Self Indulgence The Lovemakers Ambulance LTD. Every Move A Picture Extra Action Marching Band --- There are a lot of bands here that I am excited about seeing, including Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse and The Killers. I am also most pleased that The Lovemakers and Every Move A Picture have been included on the bill. They are a couple of local San Francisco bands that are really starting to build steam, EMAP is a personal favorite right now.
  14. QUOTE (D-13 @ Oct 1 2005, 03:28 PM) Kasabian (REALLY GOOD) NIN-with Teeth Heart-Greatest Hits Very nice choices, kudos on Kasabian as well. I've seen em 3 times this year so far, closest was an arms reach away from me (I think I did a review of them somewhere). Nice to see another fan of them, they are going to make it really big soon. I think the new NIN album was more meant to be heard live then in studio though.
  15. I WAS going to see Nine Inch Nails tonight, but due to medical reasons, the show was postponed until November 19th. Thats just as well. Depeche Mode are playing in San Jose on the 18th, and I know Trent has some ties with the members of DM since before he put out his first album. Maybe, possibly, a guest appearance at either show by either Trent or DM? One can dream
  16. I dont know why, but neither can I.
  17. QUOTE (liquidcrystalcompass @ Sep 27 2005, 12:28 AM) QUOTE (rickyrob @ Sep 26 2005, 12:19 PM) Why aren't Vardis in there??? Have you seriously spelt Linkin Park wrongly, or was this a typo error? Linkin Park stands for nothing. They are not musicians, only players in the realm of marketing. I've listened to that crap before and they are simply not talented musicians at all. They are part of this downfall of music that we are all going through. Why doesn't any band solo anymore. It's because of bands like Linkin Park that have no musical talent. They should be ashamed. Its the whole numetal scene, it made rock bland by comparison to what had come before.
  18. QUOTE (BSG @ Sep 26 2005, 09:05 PM) I don't care if I catch flak for this, but I absolutely LOATH System of a Down. "BYOB" is easily the most repugnant, obnoxious, unlistenable song I've ever heard, and the rest of what I've heard turns my stomach to an equal degree. So take THAT, you young whipper-snappers! <Shaking my cane at you.> Dont worry BSG, you're not the only one that feels this way. I dont know why, but I have just not been able to take them seriously at all since I first started hearing about them in early high school. I never was into any of the nu-metal scene, and thats what EVERYONE in my grade was into.
  19. QUOTE (Indica @ Sep 26 2005, 06:37 PM) QUOTE (Moonraker @ Sep 1 2005, 11:31 AM) QUOTE (Indica @ Sep 1 2005, 01:31 AM) QUOTE (Moonraker @ Aug 24 2005, 03:54 AM) Heh, already traded my two SOAD tickets for 2 GA NIN tickets. I decided to go for the Download show since there will be 6 bands, Quality>Quanity Heh, that was the idea. Never was that big of a SOAD fan to begin with at all, though I am sure they put on a hell of a show. Mars Volta was really the only driving force in buying those tickets. I saw S.O.A.D and Mars Volta again last night and this time we had 8th row seats. The first time I didn't have good seats and it didn't sound that great but this time I have to say that Mars Volta rocks!!! I kept hearing some Zep Influence but that's not like a bad thing because they do have some unique songs. I'm gonna have to get that CD. Oh yeah Indy, I saw MV last June and it was beyond words. They have a very strong future ahead of themselves. Glad you enjoyed it
  20. Way too many bad banads left off. Some good ones included. Its kinda hard to do a poll for the worst band ever, as all the choices are biased towards what the author thinks sucks and doesnt.
  21. Ohh, its been a few days off. I think I will go see Every Move A Picture tonight.

  23. Runaway Train. Definatly my favorite. Grace To Grace isnt far behind. There are a few tracks though I just cant get into on this album, The Angel's Share is one of them.
