Although I too am a newbie to this forum, I have been a Rush fan for parts of 4 decades beginning way back in 1978. I would have to agree with the other poster who stated it would be a good idea to begin your collection with some of the live albums, and I'd heartily recommend Exit... Stage Left to start. The album was recorded at several different venues on the Moving Pictures Tour in 1981 (my first Rush show - Tucson Community Center, Tucson, AZ) and is an excellent sampling of their older stuff through the Moving Pictures album. How can you go wrong with that? Take a close listen to live Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato - preferably with the lights off, eyes closed and NO distractions. Go on, give it a try...
