Jack Aubrey
QUOTE (Sonatine @ Sep 20 2009, 04:05 PM) Another great facet about that movie is that it used old-school sfx as opposed to the rather tedious & relentless cgi rubbish we get these days. Very true! They are the most spectacular practical effects I've ever seen. Those and the animatronic T Rex head from Jurassic Park are absolutely magical! RUSHHEAD666
QUOTE (Jack Aubrey @ Sep 23 2009, 10:50 AM) QUOTE (RUSHHEAD666 @ Sep 23 2009, 12:36 PM) QUOTE (Jack Aubrey @ Sep 20 2009, 07:42 AM) My wife and I were discussing these last night and I thought I'd post it as a poll here just for the heck of it. I'd have to go with Big Trouble In Little China followed by The Thing and then Escape From New York. If you haven't seen BTILC and are looking for something different, funny, and cool, then by all means check it out! Hey Dave! Great thread!! John Carpenter is my favorite director. Good news dude if you love Blu-Ray. "Big Trouble In Little China" is now out on Blu! I sure wish they would release "Escape From New York" next! I have to go with that movie as my favorite Russell Carpenter movie. That is excellent knowledge by the way on the "Elvis" thing. I forgot about that one. Here is some Carpenter knowledge for you. Did you know that John wrote "Eyes Of Laura Mars?" Good movie. When I first saw this thread I thought it was "Name Your Favorite John Carpenter Movie." That's easy. "HALLOWEEN" of course. Yeah, I knew about Laura Mars. As regards the "favorite John Carpenter" movie poll, do you want to start it or shall I? I've seen all of his movies and I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. Right now it's Prince of Darkness because 1. it's one heck of a great concept and a fantastic story and 2. it's a lesser-known movie and I like to root for the underdog. In second place for me is In The Mouth Of Madness I know it didn't get very good reviews, but I still like it because it's the closest we've ever come to getting a good H. P. Lovecraft movie and I've been a Sam Neill fan since Omen 3, which was the first R-rated movie I saw in the theater. My second was Excalibur, another fantastic movie! Hey buddy! I like the Carpenter Poll idea!! I think you should do it! I might skip a film! Would "Body Bags" count? He did the opening skit at the gas station? Also he did two of those shorts for that Masters Of Horror series! Crazy shit! I figured you would know about "Laura Mars." You have excellent taste in horror! I have all of those movies too! I love "The Reanimator." Funny story for you about "Evil Dead." Today at work we were visted by a small shoe company looking for distribution services. Possible new business for us. We are in the distribution of footware and have a small trucking company too. Anyway the C.O.O. of the company comes into the office. He says, "hi I'm Bruce Campbell." My eyes lit up like a Christmas Tree and I instantly mentioned "Evil Dead" and "Army Of Darkness." They dude chuckled and told me that he gets a lot of that. I bet you like those Sam Raimi movies too. "Quick And The Dead" just came out on Blu-Ray too! Back to Carpenter I must say that "Prince Of Darkness" RULES! You can't go wrong with Donald Pleasance in anything he does! I really enjoyed John's remake of "Village Of The Damned" too! I bet you know that Hayden Christensen is the paper boy on the bike in "In The Mouth Of Madness!" Let's get that Carpenter Poll going!! Time for me to kill a bunch of Bandwidth! LOL Anyway I'm rambling! I love "Excaliber" too. I actually still have that movie on HD DVD! Cheers!

H. P. L.
Escape from NY. The Thing close second. BTW, did you know that they had to translate "Snake" in the italian version, but they couldn't go for the real translation, "Serpente", it was too long and didn't fit, so everybody in Italy knows Plissken as... "Hyena"!! "Call me Hyena!!!" was our catchphrase back in high school... little did we know...
