Hemispheres question

Hey gang--Something about which I've always been curious:

My first copy of Hemispheres was on cassette. I completely went nuts over the music on it and bought it on CD after a couple of weeks.

I noticed immediately that between the first and second "movements" of CygX1Book2 there was a gap on the CD...something like 4 seconds. That gap was not on the cassette, nor was it on the vinyl (as I was to discover later).

Does anyone have any idea why this 4 second gap was "inserted"?

I wonder if it's because the cds are re-mastered.

I have an original first pressing / release of Hemispheres on CD, and the 3 second gap is there... looks like the gap was present on the initial transfer to CD... must have been added at that time (mastered to CD)...

Here is a snapshot of the section from the cassette:

Here is a snapshot of the same selection from the CD:

From "chord to chord" the CD selection is @ 2 seconds longer than the cassette... Cassette is 6.649 seconds in length (highlighted section) and the CD is 8.766 seconds in length (highlighted section).
