I saw a few clips of Al doing some Canadian charity event from about '94, '95, '96 with Tom Cochran, and few others and he was really bluesing it up during the "All Star Jam" section. He's also busted out in some great blues stuff during some of the shows I saw on R30 tour. Not to mention the obvious blues stuff on S&A. I also read an article in some magazine many years ago in which the interviewer finds Alex in a room warming up before a show and mentions that he was playing the blues so well he could have been in, John Mayalls Blues Breakers....or something along those lines.
