Is it really differnt though? It's a pretty old genre and has been around for longer than I can remember. It all depends on what you define as "prog". For example, I think that Radiohead are every bit as prog as Pink Floyd or Genesis etc ever were, but obviously have a radically different sound. It could be argued that bands like Celtic Frost with their tasg of "Avant Garde" metal are prog too. Personally I think the old formulas popularised by genesis and later copied by marillion got a bit turgid and boring. Ultimately it just didn't rock hard enough for me, and that is why I was very glad to discover Rush as for me they combined the best of both worlds. ie the inventiveness of Prog without the bloat and the agression and passion of hard rock. You love metal mate why not admit and drop all this prog hogwash!!
