thestand
So, I guess I should give some background info. I live... *looks at avatar* Lake George, NY. My family has a close friend that, until this year, I thought was just some creepy guy that plays a cowboy. The guys name is Bill Mckay, but since about 1940, he's gone by "Wild Windy Bill McKay". What I didn't know about him was he played the part of a guitarslinging cowboy on many movies in the 40's and 50's. He also played guitar, piano, and accordian with Roy Rodgers for awhile. OK, so today my grandfather, whom I live with, said we would drop by Bill's house after I got off work. When we get there, he has a guitar out. Cool. After about an hour of banter and going through old pictures, he tells me... he's gonna give it to me. Give. GIVE!!! Not sell, give. Oh. My. God. The guitar is an Epiphone, and according to Bill, he purchased it NEW in about 1938-9ish. He says that he remembers the date because in 1940, he entered the army, and he couldn't bring the guitar with him. The body is natural, and has pickups that were either new or installed in the 40's. It's just... mindblowing. The best day ever. Just thought I would share. Oh, and hopefully pics to come.

thestand
Let me say, this has been an amazing month for me, music-wise. I've gotten a new... everything! Bass, guitar, Chapman Stick (see other thread). Well, my camera is nowhere to be seen, but this one is exactly like mine, with a few exeptions. Mine is in much better condition, and mine has a crazy out-of-body electronics system. http://www.archtop.com/PageMill_Resources/38trbl.jpg

I know exactly how you felt when you were given that, because my grandfather gave me his Gibson L-42 right before he passed away. It's my most prized possession now. You still have to post a pic if yours when you get a chance.

CygnusX-1Bk2
Wow. Nice piece if yours is in better condition and has electronics. Because of the era it is probably pretty valuable (aside from the high sentimental value). I imagine it is very warm sounding. Very nice!

thestand
Alright, here's 2 shots of the guitar- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/thestand/git1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/thestand/git2.jpg And he also gave me the original case... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/thestand/open2.jpg And the electronics were acting up today, so I took a picture of it on my desk, with, oddly enough, TRF in the background... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/thestand/tinkering.jpg Sorry for the crappy camera... no flash, and it's 1130, so you see where the lighting problem comes in... Indica
Nice vintage guitar!!! Is it heavy? A lot of guitars I played in that era were nice solid heavy wood. Yours is in great shape for a guitar that age.
