  1. QUOTE (The Owl @ Jan 11 2010, 04:52 PM) Reading "Lifting Shadows" right now..... Intresting factoid discovered #1: Charlie Dominici's LAST show with DT, was as an opening act for Marillion on their FIRST with new singer Steve Hogarth. small world eh? I was at that November 14, 1989 show intending to buy a Marillion shirt, but you can guess what happened. Rather annoying (and surprising) to see "Dream Theatre" on the marquee of the old Ritz too. Had no idea they were opening. I only discovered Dream Theater that summer through "The Spirit Of Rush" fanzine. The updated book was a very good read. First time I read it since getting the first edition 2 years ago.
  2. QUOTE (snowdog2112 @ Sep 23 2009, 04:26 PM) QUOTE Unfortunately, I honestly don't think they REMEMBER whether or not it was ever played. This is a good point. Sometimes when the band is asked something about their history and they're kind of vague about it some people always assume they're just being coy or don't want to talk about it. The reality is that I'm sure most serious Rush fans and certainly the ones who care enough to collect bootlegs and look at old concert dates and setlists know FAR more about their history than they do. It's not like they sit around listening to their own live albums or anything. There have been several times when I've heard or read one of the three even refer to songs as being on the wrong albums and such. Plus, they said around the TFE tour they had never played Natural Science before then just as one example. There's nothing wrong with that, they just have a different perspective about it. They'd have to be really self-important types to be able to tell you about what their various setlists were and so on. I'd bet a lot of money that they couldn't tell you for sure whether certain songs were performed even on recent tours with any accuracy. I always think about this when people talk about what may still be in their "vault". I don't think they dodge the issue, they simply don't know what all exists for sure. I've read that Neil basically had to ask for help in finding that Auburn Hills video from 1994 so he could put a clip of his solo on Anatomy of a Drum Solo on there, they also said at the time that they simply got the clips from Don Kirschner's show for the R30 DVD off the internet, and someone in another thread talked about someone recently showing Alex a copy of that 1976 Passaic show with the implication that it was new to him. I'll bet that if someone went up to them and asked "Hey, is there any chance that the footage from the Pinkpop Festival from 1979 will ever be released?" they'd probably not even know what you were talking about. There's an interview on youtube with Geddy and Alex talking about the old stuff on the second disc of R30 and they had clearly forgotten all about some of that stuff until Geddy's brother dug it out. I think the people who assume they just have this vast library of stuff (video anyway) that they know about at their fingertips that's waiting to be released are just assuming too much. Absolutely! At this point, the band isn't the 24/7 concern of yesteryear that some of us more dedicated individuals would like to believe. Thankfully, Geddy (and/or the rest of the band) had the forethought to not toss whatever material was there so it could be "found" later. Imagine being the one to go through there and discover what might be there....
  3. QUOTE (mankad89 @ Sep 20 2009, 03:01 PM) I still think the song is pretty disjointed and pretentious. and very naive and embryotic, but I LOVE it.
  4. This is awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing. A lot of this stuff is new to me. I think that Frankfurt '79 gig is a gem too, though it's been a few months since I've heard it. I should pull it off of the shelf
  5. QUOTE (Pags @ Aug 18 2009, 12:36 PM) The answer is yes. I have seen two Rush tribute bands. The first one I saw spoiled me for all others, but the second one I saw was also very good. Check this out. Power Windows Tribute Band snippits To see them play is the key. They have so much fun on-stage, are very energetic and interact with the crowd, and individually they are VERY talented musicians who play the shit out of these songs. They make it look easy. This past February I went to see them with a very critical friend of mine who's a hard guy to please. He was blown away. I was really looking forward to that Power Windows show in February, but got an email saying it was cancelled and they were working to get another venue. never heard another word. Where did they play? I've seen Power Windows 10 times over the years. I've seen a band called 2112 once, Hemispheres once and another Rush tribute band (can't remember the name). I won't say what I thought of them. I will say that I like Power Windows the best by far because they really get the vibe and it comes across. They will also play some obscure stuff and they remember that the band didn't break up after Signals (a definate plus for me)
  6. Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit Dream Theater....
