  1. new album is a GIGANTIC step up, easily their best since Six Degrees. they sound very refreshed, like they had more creative control over the band. The songs don't drag, the drumming is inspired, the influences aren't worn on their sleeves as prominently. It does have a bit of a heavier/darker edge to it -- parts are incredibly reminiscent of Awake (which is a perfect album, so that's a good thing). I've only had one full listen so obviously i still have to do a lot more listening to take everything in. Lost Not forgotten might be the most amazing thing I've heard all year.
  2. lost power, and cable shortly thereafter. and our generator just happened to fail on us as well (perfect timing, right?). NYSEG claims we'll be lucky to have power back by next weekend. Not much damage from the storm though, just a ton of trees and wires down. While the storm was happening, it didn't seem that horrible though -- about the same magnitude as a heavy summer storm. Everything's fine up at school.
  3. this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98zq9bsX-Sg also this: which is so well-produced and heavily layered that it's hard to think it's from 1972 (most of the rest of the album is the same way)

  5. stormy songs for the stormy apocalypse LOLOLOLOL! i'll start with the obvious, Jacob's Ladder: the not-quite-so-obvious, Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Queen's The Prophet's Song doesn't have to be about storms per se, just hsa to sound stormy

  9. can't really remember much of anything about any of them, tbh.
  10. QUOTE (Tommy Sawyer @ Aug 25 2011, 09:56 PM) How about Wish You Were Here? That would be much more appreciated by me as it is THE *best* Pink Floyd album! The Wall lends itself more readily to 5.1 mixing -- far more stuff going on in the music and other sounds on that album. WYWH would sound cool in 5.1 but it wouldn't be as monumental.
  11. QUOTE (yyzyy @ Aug 25 2011, 07:26 PM) I dunno, but after all the recent song snippets and 'On the Backs of Angels', I'm not really looking forward to the album as much as I thought I'd be. Given they're only a minute or so long, but the only one that even remotely sounds awesome to me is 'Breaking All Illusions.' Everything else is, for lack of a better word, "BLAH" Hopefully this isn't this case, but if the snippets are any indication of the album, I think I might be disappointed. what we've heard of the album so far is more musical, energetic, original and inspired than anything Dream Theater has done since 2002 (with the exception of a couple songs/parts of songs). i don't easily get excited over new releases, but even i can hardly stand the anticipation with this one. To each their own i guess, if you prefer your Dream Theater bland and boring you've always got Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos to listen to
  12. newest clip, from Lost Not Forgotten: all i have to say is holy. shit.
  13. QUOTE (metaldad @ Aug 24 2011, 02:33 PM) QUOTE (tangy @ Aug 24 2011, 11:49 AM) i keep waiting for a change in sound big or small now that MP is gone and just don't hear one yet from the new live material or the snippets from ADTOE. Same problem for me. I also want to add that i think it Sucks they are doing a Drum Solo . Really ? A f-n drum solo ? Not 2 extra songs, a drum solo. Well, they just hired one of the best (if not the absolute greatest) living drummers, so obviously they want to showcase his skills. Mangini is accomplished enough that he doesn't have anything to prove, so it's almost 100% definitely the band's decision to include a drum solo in the program. Don't see what's so horrible or off-base about this, it will probably only last a tour or two anyway. Plus, Mangini is of such great musical and technical caliber that he can actually keep a drum solo interesting.

Honestly, the best the whole band (especially James) has sounded in years, and they look so much happier without Portnoy on stage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdBeeph0aFM You know, the backing vox sound better. Did they implement some new vocal effect? yeah, they got rid of portnoy

  17. dayummmmm, 7 years? i barely knew how to use the internet that long ago! congrats
  18. perhaps a better thread title would be "songs you are intimately familiar with". if you listen to a song that it's "tough to tell" enough times, you'll still end up being able to identify it quickly. likewise, most of the "signature opening" songs have saturated pop culture and radio, which is why they are so easily picked out.
