  1. This thread has encouraged me to check out those first 3 albums.
  2. One that has yet to be mentioned: Clouds Taste Metallic by The Flaming Lips.
  3. I believe the story is that Arthur Lee encouraged Holzman to check them out, but he saw a few (4?) performances before deciding to sign them (and IIRC, that was the band that was Elektra's first smash band).
  4. Feeling thin and sounding thin are 2 different things. I just played bass in a band last night with 35-90 strings and there was no lack of bottom to be found. Yes, I base this on my experience and some will say the opposite, but for me I don't chalk up that Wal sound Geddy had to his strings. I wonder if it was in the EQ. I also think the MK II was worse than the I (based on RtB boots, I wonder if he had the tone completely rolled out on that bass). If it matters,
  5. There is a video on YouTube of someone playing Grand Designs on an MK1 using medium Rotos and it still had that twangy sound. IMO string gauge has nothing to do with it.
  6. October 19, 1996 in Albany, New York. My vote would probably be for versions after March 1980 on the PeW tour, 1981 renditions, TFE renditions, and the 2008 SnA versions.
  7. If you mean Stephen Bladd, I would just like to say that he is probably one of the most underrated drummers in rock. RIP J. I will be listening to the music you helped give life to at least for the next few days.
  8. Weird. I thought it was the Eagles reuniting in 1994 that started this.
  9. YES! I am more interested in specific years from this set, and this is nice to see.
  10. Out of these choices, Signals. Other good albums from this year are I Advance Masked, Iron Fist, and Shuttered Room.
  11. While I am still watching this, I wonder if that is where the songs come from? If so, it would be nice to have that recording! He says the recorded songs are from Reno, the show just prior to the clinic. More proof my hearing is tanking, or I can't pay attention worth a lick.
  12. While I am still watching this, I wonder if that is where the songs come from? If so, it would be nice to have that recording! Also, I think his drums sounded better here than any of the recordings from this tour captured.
  13. Count me in as a fan of I'm the One as well. Maybe my favorite song on this album.
  14. From this list, only Overkill would get my vote. As one poster referenced as being released from the year in the OP, Reggatta de Blanc might take the cake. I can't believe I forgot about Damn the Torpedoes and the Long Run. I also need to check out The Fine Art of Surfacing as well.
  15. I agree that there are some musical similarities. I think some of the music on A Trick of the Tail is close to what Rush was doing and would end up doing. The solo on No One at the Bridge is very Hackett-esque and a lot of Neil Peart's drumming approach was similar to Phil Collins'.
  16. Turn that frown upside down because you can still be with just a little work. If that work means liking the song this thread is talking about, that won't happen. Then again, I like Heresy and Neurotica.
  17. Then I am not a true Rush fan.
  18. A Steinberger L-2. I would hardly call it ridiculous. I DO wonder what those would sound like using the neck pickup only (probably like a non-wood Precision).
  19. For all the progressive bands Rush gets compared to, I think Genesis is one they have a lot in common with. From 1973-1980 they put out some superb material. Count me in as someone who is a major fan of at least some of their catalog.
  20. Props on the Capricorn! This would be hard, but Stay Clean would be on there somewhere. Beyond that, it is a toss-up between a number of tracks from Overkill and Bomber.
  21. Depending on the date of that Police show you caught, I have a recording if you want it (but only the second night seems to exist).
  22. Is that Matthew Caws in your pic next to Neil? No, it is Beck Hansen. Sorry for the confusion.
