  1. IMPORTANT: Read this before posting ratings (It should also help clear up any questions about others' ratings) (I'm talking to you, Segue!)
  2. Hardly magic, but not quite mucous either. http://www.therushforum.com/index.php?/topic/90908-the-rating-thread/page__st__20#entry3385288
  3. My Led Zeppelin and "evolution of guitar" t shirts.
  4. Rush - Presto (1989) Show Don't Tell: 11/15 Chain Lightning: 11/15 The Pass: 12/15 War Paint: 6/15 Scars: 9/15 Presto: 9/15 Superconductor: 8/15 <Anagram (For Mongo)>: 5/15 Red Tide: 9/15 Hand Over Fist: 5/15 *Available Light*: 13/15 Overall rating: 7 (Mediocre/Good) The end of the synth era, and the beginning of... mediocrity. There may only be 4 songs on here with a grade of "mediocre" or worse, but there are also only 4 songs with a grade of "very good" or better, and all of these can be found at the beginning or end, making the middle of the album very tedious listening. Still, there are 4 tracks on this album that I will regularly go back to, saving it from total condemnation. The piano-based ballad Available Light once (but no longer does) held a place in my top 5 Rush songs (no small feat) and The Pass remains a favorite of the band (and with good reason). However, an album where a 7 track stretch has no songs with a 10 or above is going to get a mediocre grade unless the rest of the songs are all-time greats, which is not the case with Presto, so a 7 it is.
  5. Rush - Grace Under Pressure (1984) Distant Early Warning: 13/15 Afterimage: 12/15 Red Sector A: 12/15 The Enemy Within: 12/15 The Body Electric: 11/15 Kid Gloves: 13/15 <Red Lenses>: 10/15 *Between The Wheels*: 14/15 Overall rating: C (Very Good/Great) This marks the end of a "transitional" period in Rush's sound, one to a more keyboard-dominated sound. As such, many fans hate this release; however, the chilly atmosphere and bleak lyrics place it among my top 5 Rush records. Highlights include the grinding, metallic Between The Wheels and the "poppier" Distant Early Warning.
  6. King Crimson: Larks Tongues in Aspic (1973) **Larks Tongues In Aspic, Part 1**: 15/15 <Book Of Saturday>: 8/15 Exiles: 11/15 Easy Money: 12/15 Larks Tongues In Aspic, Part 2: 14/15 Overall rating: E (Great) (If you take the average you'll get 12/15, which would be a C at most, but the two best tracks are also the longest, and clearly featured, and bookend the album to make sure it starts and ends on high notes... a perfect example of how things like track listing can strongly affect the grade of an album)
  7. Red? Hmm... *King Crimson - Red (1974)* Red: 13/15 Fallen Angel: 14/15 One More Red Nightmare: 13/15 <Providence>: 10/15 (It's good but I'd still say it's by far the worst track on the album) *Starless*: 15/15 Overall rating: E (Great) ...Do I even need to link to yours?
  8. Me It's good. Though I would never think of calling it great (mostly because of those two suck jobs at the end)
  9. The / means "bordering on". B is Very Good, C is Very Good/Great and D is Great/Very Good. Follow the link in the instructions (second post), the album ratings aren't my original scale
  10. 3 quick and easy partials: *Yes - Close To The Edge (1972)* *Close To The Edge*: 15/15 And You And I: 15/15 <Siberian Khatru>: 14/15 Overall Rating: 10 (Olympian) Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans (1973) *The Revealing Science Of God*: 14/15 The Remembering: 10/15 <The Ancient>: 9/15 Ritual: 12/15 Overall rating: B (Very Good) Yes - Relayer (1974) **The Gates Of Delirium**: 15/15 Sound Chaser: 13/15 <To Be Over>: 11/15 Overall rating: D (Great/Very Good)
  11. You forgot... Overall rating... http://www.boldsky.com/img/2013/11/28-cowdunk.jpg Well, I can't see it... but judging by the image name it's spot on :ebert: Shows up for me...hope everyone else can see it... It shows up for me too. Odd... now it's showing up for me.

  14. I generally discourage using the average score to figure out the overall rating, since it doesn't take into account long chunks of filler, etc. (For example if you averaged it out W&W would probably be closer to an A but since all the filler is concentrated on one extremely tedious stretch it automatically gets docked)
  15. Hey Segue... there's a new thread in GD dedicated to album ratings/reviews, check it out. It even explains in depth the 15 point system, so that you can finally understand it.
  16. Last few (partial reviews) for the day: Rush - A Farewell To Kings (1977) A Farewell To Kings: 12/15 ***Xanadu***: 15/15 Closer To The Heart: 11/15 Cinderella Man: 13/15 <Madrigal>: 9/15 Cygnus X-1: 13/15 Overall rating: D (Great/Very Good) *Rush - Hemispheres (1978)* *Hemispheres*: 15/15 Circumstances: 14/15 <The Trees>: 13/15 La Villa Stangiato: 14/15 Overall rating: F (All-time Great) Genesis - Wind & Wuthering (1976) Eleventh Earl Of Mar: 12/15 One For The Vine: 7/15 Your Own Special Way: 8/15 <Wot Gorilla>: 6/15 All In A Mouse's Night: 8/15 *Blood On The Rooftops*: 13/15 'unquiet Slumber For The Sleepers...: 11/15 ...in That Quiet Earth': 12/15 Afterglow: 11/15 Overall rating: 8 (Good/Mediocre) (For what it's worth an EP with just Eleventh Earl and the last 4 would probably get at least a B) (Full reviews will come later... too tired now)
  17. I always wondered what the heck this picture had to do with the name of the album. I think I read that they were trying to get the least trippy photo possible... which happened to be Lulubelle III the cow. Nothing to do with the name of the album I think (though some of the subsections of the title track were named for it)
  18. This one's for you, Narpski Yes - Going For The One (1977) Going For The One: 12/15 Turn Of The Century: 13/15 Parallels: 13/15 <Wonderous Stories>: 12/15 *Awaken*: 14/15 Overall rating: D (Great/Very Good) After a three year break, Yes decided to re-enter the studio with Wakeman back in tow. The result was an album that, at least for half it's duration, brings back an element rarely found in Yes's previous 3 studio releases: fun. Indeed, all of the band members seem incredibly "energized" on this album, and the results include the singles Wondrous Stories and Going For The One, found "too commercial" by some but which are just fine by me; meanwhile, Turn Of The Century is a beautiful piano/acoustic ballad, Parallels is a wonderful church organ-driven rocker and Awaken is one of their greatest sidelongs, complete with a quiet, hypnotic midsection that may pass one by on first listen but which eventually proves to be one of the greatest "meditative" passages in Yesmusic as it builds to a huge, bombastic finale. Overall, this is perhaps the last "classic" Yes album, and undeniably one of the high points of their career.
  19. ^^^ Thinks that Presto is better than CA
  20. Taking a break from reposts: Rush - Rush (1974) Finding My Way: 11/15 Need Some Love: 5/15 Take A Friend: 8/15 *Here Again*: 12/15 What You're Doing: 9/15 <In The Mood>: 4/15 Before and After: 9/15 Working Man: 11/15 Overall rating: 8 (Good/Mediocre) Rush's debut is not very much like the rest of their career, instead betraying another influence: Led Zeppelin. Indeed, while not comparing in quality to their work (or where Rush would be in just 3 years), it's simply rock played loud and fast (and sometimes loud and slow). Of course, this isn't my favorite type of music, and as a consequence I get a bit tired of it after a while (Maybe that's why I like Here Again so much, as it's much more downbeat and introspective than the rest of the album), but overall it is a mildly enjoyable listen, and a decent start to a great band.
  21. Oh yeah, and an explanation: *asterisks* denote best song <angle brackets> denote worst song italics denote standout tracks blue text denotes "lowlight" tracks within an album Weighted as such: 15: Flawless 14: Near flawless 12-13: Great 11: Very good 9-10: Good 7-8: Mediocre 4-6: Bad 2-3: Awful 1: Beyond awful (Parenthesis) denote a rating which is, for various reasons, effectively meaningless. Italics denote a rating which, while still meaningful, is highly ambiguous. Album ratings are hexadecimal, meaning that 1-9 are in normal order, but it progresses upwards from A to F and then to 10. Album ratings are not required and are less structured than song ratings, but the same modifiers apply to them apart from blue-highlighting. (These are effectively the same as John McFerrin's, explained here)
  22. Mr. Not thought that the ratings didn't deserve to be among the clutter of spam... so here they are. Starting it off with some reposts: King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969) 21st Century Schizoid Man: 14/15 I Talk To The Wind: 12/15 *Epitaph*: 14/15 <Moonchild>: 7/15 The Court Of The Crimson King: 13/15 Overall rating: D (Great/Very Good) Where it all began... I think this one is a tad overrated, and Moonchild is kind of dumb (the last 10 minutes at least), but it is an exemplary album either way. Standouts are the haunting Epitaph and the loud, manic 21st Century Schizoid Man. King Crimson - In The Wake Of Poseidon (1970) <Peace: A Beginning>: (7/15) *Pictures Of A City*: 14/15 Cadence and Cascade: 10/15 In The Wake Of Poseidon: 12/15 Peace: A Theme: 9/15 Cat Food: 12/15 The Devil's Triangle: 13/15 <Peace: An End>: (7/15) Overall rating: C (Very Good/Great) Some see this as a carbon copy of Court, but I think that, while this is effectively true of the first side, the second side has enough of its own identity to somewhat pull it out of the lofty shadow of its predecessor. The (rather pointless) Peace tracks, alas, bring this album down just a tad, to a high C rather than the low D that it manages otherwise.
  23. No, it started on Driven. Geddy said in a T4E era interview that there were 3 tracks of bass on that song.
