  1. MMCXII ;) ;) ;) Best post of the entire thread!
  2. So how do we initialize 2112? 2? TT? ToT? TOOT? TTOHaT?
  3. Old people, lazy people, and inflexible people suck. So does your Mom, that's what led to you after all.
  4. I see no issue abbreviating the album titles. Those are understood on a site such as this. When people start abbreviating song titles, it gets a little annoying, unless it is extremely obvious, like FoL or TSOR. I was looking at a thread and saw MP. Had to look back a ways thru the thread to figure out they were talking about Manhattan Project. What's FoL? My thought exactly :) 19 minutes that remove all doubt as to whether the guys in Rush ever did drugs. Well, shouldn't it be TFoL? And for the record. It is way easier to type AFTK, and everyone knows what it means. When you start abbv. songs, that's when things get dicey. Maybe that's where the line is drawn then? Someone should post up a newbie-key so everyone knows PeW isn't a smelly blaster shot.

  6. I think what the naysayers fail to see is that it's not a "don't use initializations" complaint. Rather, it's about having the common sense to know when an initialization/abbreviation is appropriate to use. Extreme arguments are no argument at all. When you type FBI, NSA or CIA, or IRS, or acronyms like RADAR - these are items in the common vernacular. To initialize any and every proper name is simply ridiculous and only proves one has no filter when writing.
  7. I don't know. Can you change your name to mister vander? I'm tired of seeing mr Well, you wouldn't know this, but those are actually my initials - not the shortened version of the word "Mister" - my first two names being Matthew Ray, hence "MR". The entire handle comes from my "LAN ID" at my workplace of 15 years which is an eight character ID for anyone working there, consisting of the first two initials and the first six characters of the last name. So it's just something I'm used to typing for over a decade. Good try, though. You do realize that this is actually twice as odious to the "hate abbreviations" crowd, right?. Sure do! Just like to keep my posts going!
  8. I do agree with this, hence that's why my title is they're getting "out of hand". I just thought I'd post when I finally saw the Necromancer as "TN". But on a Rush forum, learning a couple dozen or so common or agreed upon initializations of album titles isn't too bad, it's when EVERYTHING gets initialized to the point of uselessness. "I really like listening to S on S. C and C are both pretty good from S as well. I also really enjoy A from C. Not to be confused with A from P/G."

  10. So, maybe I'm just an old fart, but does everyone really need to initialize every Rush title/proper name instead of just typing it out? Is time so precious you can't type Clockwork Angels instead of CA or Geddy Lee instead of GL? Heck I just read a freaking post where the poster initialized The Necromancer as "TN". Really? Perhaps those doing so may one day realize it actually takes people reading these posts more time to translate WTF you mean instead of just typing like a normal human (see what i did there?)

    Rush Sucks!

Their concerts are nothing but sausage-fests.
  12. Received a reply from Andy VanDette at Masterdisk. My question as posed to Andy (well, Masterdisk really): Response from Andy:
  13. Thanks for that. All those open notes are in parentheses - which means they are incidentals, accidentals, or ghost notes (depending on who you talk to) but essentially all mean the same thing - they aren't really "played" or if they are, they're played much softer than the surrounding notes. Knowing Alex's style, I'd venture to say he just let's those open E's ring out from the pull-offs (hence the ghost notes).
  14. My vote was for "Wish Them Well" Freeze. I Think I'm Going Bald
  15. I still don't have this to this day. I gave up a long time ago on this riff and never revisited it. I "cheat" when I do play it - non-guitarist/non-rush fans can't tell the difference, but it's not right. I should tackle this again someday. If I recall, I couldn't quite get the picking right to hit that open E after the fretted D and have it sound smooth. Yeah, I know what you mean! I could never quite get it down either. A lot of people "cheat" on it, I have found, though. The actual lick goes like this: http://i39.tinypic.com/2rxf86s.jpg But, so many people, including me, play it like this: http://i41.tinypic.com/5460sn.jpg One day, I'll get it! By the way, what tab software are you using to get those screenshots from?

That's just it, the first one is what I thought it always was, but according to Alex himself in that video - that is not what he is playing. He never hits that open E (or open B) at the end of each quarter phrase. BUT (a big but) - that is just a "teaser" video. Perhaps he builds on the "lesson" until he shows you the full phrase. Anyone see this video in it's entirety? Can you solve this question? I hate to spend $6 just to learn that the tabs have been right all these years for a song I'm frankly not all that interested in playing anymore...

If I recall, I couldn't quite get the picking right to hit that open E after the fretted D and have it sound smooth. I still can't play it either. I'm guessing it is a mental thing as I haven't tried to figure it out in probably 10 years. I don't think I ever got close either. Another reason is that we've all heard the song a million times and I'd rather focus my efforts on other tunes. Here, let Alex show you how to play it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc209Q9m6x8 My personal favorite is the solo in No~One at the Bridge as it was the first guitar solo I learned to play. :) Holy crap! You mean I've been playing this RIGHT all these years? I always thought there was an open E after the each D note. Stupid guitar Player magazine from the 80's - I think I've believed this for over 20 years now and always thought I was cheating by playing it exactly as Alex show in this clip. Whoda thunk!
  18. By-Tor - Knight of Darkness, Centurion of Evil, Devil's Prince By-Tor in defeat retreats to Hell. Snow Dog is victorious. The land of the overworld is saved again. So clearly he's the bad guy here. I mean he had ambitions of leaving hell (across the river Styx) and doing some evil upon the overworld. Snow dog stops him at the gate (who may not be the good guy cause his eyes were shimmering with hate after all.) So then why is By-Tor the GOOD guy when he fights the Necromancer? Being the Necromancer, did he summon By-Tor who he could not control and By-Tor defeated the Necromancer (whose wraith flew away to darken other lands.) So By-Tor perhaps helped these three travelers unwittingly - just a summoned demon who the necromancer could not control? Did the Necromancer loose the Knight of Darkness on the overworld after all despite Snow Dog's earlier victory? Are these stories reversed chronologically? Perhaps By-Tor was summoned by the Necromancer, then defeated by Snow Dog?
  19. I agree - I already own both as I'm in the process of replacing my entire Rush collection as it's pretty long-in-the-tooth. However, I am in the process of converting the physical media to other formats for various reasons so the question came up. It's purely academic from my viewpoint as I've tested ripping the 96/24 DVD-Audio version and plan to use that as my "master" for transcoding to other formats. I wish I had the money to also grab all the HDTracks even though I can't hear anything beyond 20kHz (likely much less at my age.)
  20. Buried in page three of Google results, I did find this interview with Richard Chycki. Not a definitive answer but it does imply an all-new mastering... http://www.soundandv...01/25/2112-51-0 Still he may be only speaking of the high-res 2.0 streams and not the CD "redbook" included in all the deluxe editions which jives with the opinion quoted in the above post.
  21. Searching continues to come up with nothing. All I've been able to find is an opinion on another forum: http://forums.steveh...d.299870/page-7 I just don't have time to compare waveforms in Pro Tools (not really an accurate assessment anyway) - can't they just release this information when they do press releases? In the meantime, I have an email out to MasterDisk.
  22. I've had my white RTB sweatshirt for a long, long time. My current favorite is the black "Rash" shirt I got with the Time Machine DVD.
