  1. This should be a poll At any rate, hands down 80s Rush for me. It's hard for people to get past 70s Rush, but I do it by basically think of them as different bands... since they're completely different in every decade, hell, even in the same decade (ex. PeW and P). But yeah, a poll with 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s would be interesting, except 70s would have the highest number of votes and it would gradually go down until the 00s, and thanks to CA, the 00s would beat out the 90s... Just my opinion.
  2. QUOTE (Spoutnik @ Jun 17 2012, 02:16 AM) WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST SOUNDING RUSH ALBUM EVER: "Power windows" Sound fantastik!!! WHAT WAS THE LAST DECENT SOUNDING ALBUM? "Counterparts" Every instruments sound great on that album! Bring back Kevin Shirley the caveman! Huh. Well, I came in here to say what was said in the first reply xD PoW is definitely the best produced, and CP was the most recent album to not sound like balls. But of course you already knew that didn't you?
  3. QUOTE (Cyclonus X-1 @ Jun 19 2012, 06:43 PM) 1) Subdivisions 2) Limelight 3) The Necromancer 4) Jacob's Ladder 5) Tom Sawyer 6) Freewill 7) Fly By Night 8) Distant Early Warning 9) Chemistry 10) Red Barchetta The Anarchist is knocking on the door. Chemistry already there and The Anarchist maybe moving in? I've heard MP so many times I can't even listen to it anymore but I'm glad a lot of people still get enjoyment out of it, it's a great album. Permanent Waves is a different story
  4. Yeah it can be pretty daunting since there are SO MANY good songs. I had to leave off Earthshine and Between Sun & Moon This is a pretty ever changing kind of list deal, but a lot of the ones I have up have been on my rotation for a while besides Limelight and Hemispheres, but I mean, c'mon, it's Limelight & Hemispheres! I like seeing all the CA stuff sneaking up in peoples list. The title track is one I've really been digging, as well as The Anarchist, but it'd be hard to knock anything off my list, even Totem edited to say I also like seeing Animate, Ceiling Unlimited, Available Light, etc. showing up. There were some I expect to see (Hemispheres, 2112, etc.) but there are always some surprises.
  5. QUOTE (Snaked @ Jun 18 2012, 11:36 AM) "Paul is dead" Pure gold.
  6. QUOTE (The Vigilante @ Jun 19 2012, 02:34 AM) 1.. Cygnus X-1 book2 .. loved listening to this tune as a teenager and still to this day im in awe of the arrangements..great with headphones 2.. Witch Hunt .. Have always liked the atmosphere of this tune nothing like it 3.. Natural Science .. the clarity is unreal.. Love those trippy Rush tunes 4.. Territories .. as a drummer you cant but help digging the rhythmic feel of this song 5.. Analog Kid .. Really like this one live .. the move me u move me chorus always gives me goose bumps just beautiful power 6.. Chemistry .. another very rhythmic track that i enjoy anytime 7.. Show don't tell .. one of my favorite commercial Rush tunes very catchy 8.. Scars .. another track that always has me tapping on countertops 9.. By - Tor and the Snow Dog .. Song is alittle dated sounding but when they do it live pure bliss for me.. Alex's guitar the way he makes it sound and the way he shreds does it for me 10.. Ghost of a chance .. Rush doesn't have any ballads per say .. But this song to me just flows and is beautiful in a hard rock sense..Alex lead part is awesome All great song choices
  7. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jun 19 2012, 01:10 AM) QUOTE (GUPower Windows @ Jun 18 2012, 10:07 PM) I really don't think 1,000 people's opinions combined proves that the overall consensus that VT is average. It does prove that's how RateYourMusic members feel though. This conversation is stupid Anyway, I love all 3! The only Rush album I really don't dig is I said it. If you're able to completely dismiss 1,000 people's opinions, you must really not like what they had to say. And they didn't say it was average:; some loved it, some liked, some didn't like, some hated. All I'm saying is that it's the 2nd lowest rated album among all Rush albums, where over 1,000 people voted on each album, which includes hardcore fans, casual fans, non-fans, etc. Some people REALLY don't like what those results show and want to dismiss them at any cost. They're entitled. It changes nothing. Of course if YOU love the album, who cares what everyone else thinks, right? Bahaha man you really like making assumptions don't you? 1. I didn't dismiss them, I said it's how the RateYourMusic members feel. 2. "which includes hardcore fans, casual fans, non-fans, etc." How do you know this? Oh yeah, assumptions. 3. "Of course if YOU love the album, who cares what everyone else thinks, right?" Why you gotta be so hateful I never said I was dismissing someones opinion and I can see where people have issues with VT. I'm not deaf to the mixing/production. well, 1,000 people out of the over 338,00+ people who bought it (looked up some numbers on album sales. the 338k is from 2007 so I'm sure it's gone up some since) isn't a good overall representation. That 1,000 people aren't even 1% of who owns the album. That's what I'm getting at.
  8. Simple enough. Top 10 Rush songs, any album, that you personally enjoy. They may not be the 10 best Rush songs, but 95% of their music is genuinely awesome It's pretty much impossible for me to rank these, but these are the 10 songs I just can't give up listening to. *Totem (T4E) this song pops into my head all the time lol *Grand Designs (PoW) kinda synth cheese but the production on PoW is some of the best, not to mention the solo... and the popified chorus. *Bravado (RTB) There is a live bootleg I think is the best version, but idr which one *Chemistry (Signals) synth bliss. Sector Box Set Remasters make Neil's drums pop more, etc. so the everything doesn't sound so compressed. Lyrics are a little bit lacking, but they all contributed. The solo is one of my favorites. *Limelight (MP) I'm usually not judgmental, but shame on you if you don't like this one *The Pass (Presto) Just a well written moving song. I think it's definitely one of their most touching. *Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (Hemispheres) the for reals song of the list, which is probably as long as all the others combined xD not really, but it's just magnificently crafted. *Between The Wheels (P/G) Alex is my favorite member, annnd this song is just awesome. *The Weapon (Signals) the P/G DVD/CD version so beastly. The Rush Sector Box Set made this song finally pop too. *Where's My Thing? (RTB) topping it all off with my favorite instrumental. They're ALL superb, but the live solo for this on their Madison Square Garden bootleg from [april?] 1991 is just ridiculous, not to mention them messing around on the opening. It's insane. Opinions/Lists of your own?
  9. QUOTE (treeduck @ Jun 19 2012, 12:32 AM) QUOTE (The K Man @ Jun 19 2012, 12:27 AM) I don't hate Presto; I just think that just about every other Rush album is better. I'd still give Presto a solid 3 stars out of 5. I've got to admit Presto, while I think it's an ok album and there's some good songs on there, it's my least favourite, bar Feedback. The weak production doesn't help either. It really...uhh...I guess soft is the word for it. I don't think I've ever really even listened to Feedback, but I really don't like covers. Presto is in my bottom 5, but it's kind of hard compete with everything around it. The only album really close to Presto is RTB, and I think it's definitely more consistent. Bottom 5 isn't even that bad since I still rate P 4, RTB & T4E 3.5. FBN is a solid 4-5 for most people, but it's definitely not my thing. I used to love 70s Rush but post MP stuff has me captivated. I've been into every phase of Rush xD bottom 4 Presto RTB T4E Fly By Night RUSH
  10. QUOTE (The K Man @ Jun 19 2012, 12:27 AM) I don't hate Presto; I just think that just about every other Rush album is better. I'd still give Presto a solid 3 stars out of 5. The only track I really don't like on Presto is War Paint. Some songs are cheesy (Chain Lightning, etc.) but it's pretty consistent unlike the previous effort, HYF. Second Nature kills it for me. Absolutely. Completely. Kills it. I can deal with War Paint. I'll quit changing the subject. I'm surprised people are so iffy about S&A. I didn't really get into it at all until about 6 months ago, and it's been on regular rotation (some songs, not the whole thing) ever since. I really like The Larger Bowl though and I can see how that doesn't do it for a lot of people.
  11. QUOTE (The K Man @ Jun 19 2012, 12:17 AM) I like all three, but Vapor Trails is probably near the bottom of my Rush album ranking (ahead of only Presto, the debut and Test for Echo), and Snakes and Arrows doesn't quite crack the top 10. Clockwork Angels is still too new to fairly rate or rank, but I am pretty sure I will put it ahead of VT and S&A. I also don't understand all the Presto hate... People say it's always lacking balls, so does everyone want balls?
  12. QUOTE (ak2112 @ Jun 18 2012, 07:22 PM) Vapor Trails is far and away the worst album the band has ever released IMO. Pure garbage (and I'm talking about the songs, not the mix/mastering). I try and listen to it twice a year all the way through and every time its pure torture. Clockwork Angels and Snake & Arrows however...pure genius! The Songs are garbage? I like 11 of the 13 xD This leads me to assume you've never heard T4E. Dog Years/The Color of Right/Carve Away the Stone. I love Totem, Time & Motion, Virtuality, Limbo and Half The World. Oh, and Driven, Resist & Test For Echo I still think VT is quite a bit stronger than it's given credit for. The mixing is bad, but I'm not seeing the songs being bad.
  13. I really don't think 1,000 people's opinions combined proves that the overall consensus that VT is average. It does prove that's how RateYourMusic members feel though. This conversation is stupid Anyway, I love all 3! The only Rush album I really don't dig is I said it.
  14. QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Jun 7 2012, 11:31 AM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jun 7 2012, 11:11 AM) People have complained about how Rush have done things forever. I've done it plenty - wishing they released albums more than every 5 years instead of endless touring, taking apart their music bit by bit and over-analyzing everything, etc. Some decisions of theirs I really agree with, and others I really don't. That's the thing though. Rush doesn't care. They do things their own way, whether any given fan likes it or not. They don't cater to how I or how anyone wants them to do things or thinks they should do things. That's how it should be. Similarly, if I decide to grab a copy of the album a week early because I can, knowing full well 150% that I'm buying the CD the day it's released anyway, why should anyone care how I do things? You can say yes but it's still wrong, that's not how Rush wants it done! So? They don't respect my personal wishes and I don't respect theirs. I apologize if I'm too big a fan of their music to resist. Stick a big piece of chocolate cake in front of your eyes and don't take a bite if that's your choice. Some of us aren't as strong. If they really didn't want it downloaded a week early, they shouldn't have licensed it to Classic Rock magazine knowing they'd be arriving at people's doors a week early because they knew full well the second it was in anyone's hands it would be all over the internet. It was a miracle they kept the album under wraps as long as they did. And even if they did manage to prevent a leak until the day it was released, that still wouldn't stop the people who would only download it and not buy it. I'm not in that category. I'm buying it ASAP Tuesday morning. Seriously, what's the BFD? If you want to deprive yourself for the sake of morality and wait till June 12th, go for it - totally valid point of view. Some of us can't wait. In the end we're really big fans who can't contain our enthusiasm. Is that really that bad a thing? Is that really a bad thing for Rush that it has such wildly enthusiastic fans who would chance a download because they can't wait to hear their new music? Call it rationalizing and justifying or whatever if you must, but I'm telling you, no one who's downloaded it and who's been enjoying the hell out of the new album for days is going to feel bad about that because you've decided to deprive yourself of the new Rush album a few days longer than the rest of us. Why should we feel guilty for our enjoyment if we know in our hearts we're not ripping off the band since we're getting the CD anyway? Would that make YOU feel better since you think we're cheating somehow that at least we feel bad or guilty about it? The OP certainly thinks we should feel guilty. This has to be the most eloquent rationalization in this thread......but it IS a rationalization nonetheless. Ask yourself: If you were busted for downloading the album before you had legitimately paid for the artist's work, and you were in a court of law and offered to the judge "well I was gonna pay for it next week"....do you honestly believe you would get a "not guilty" verdict based on your intentions? Deep down we all know we shouldn't get the album without paying for it, but many of us do it anyway. We just don't believe that we're going to get caught because it's the Internet, they can't find me, Rush doesn't care, etc. I don't think the OP intended a "guilt trip" for anyone....he's just calling attention to the fact of what people have openly admitted on this board to doing, regardless of the justification given. And personally I think it's pretty sad that matters of simple morality are open for debate....self-denial continues to be most underrated and undervalued. You and OP really like your high horses don't you?
  15. QUOTE (SchemingDemon @ Jun 5 2012, 10:12 PM) I wanna see the reasons behind why those who gave it a 1 chose that. I'm genuinely curious I'd assume it's because they think Rush went downhill after Neil Peart joined the band
  16. QUOTE (UltimoGuitarist @ Jun 5 2012, 04:12 PM) QUOTE (phoenix87 @ Jun 5 2012, 04:44 PM) Who ever voted it as their worst album, must not have ever heard Presto. This. Seriously? Oh, you're both serious.
  17. QUOTE (ThinkingBig @ Jun 5 2012, 09:52 PM) QUOTE (Terrapin @ Jun 5 2012, 09:17 PM)Absolutely dreadful "Producer" Why is he a producer? Who is he? Why are the Rush boys putting their collective faith in this compression happy, grunge loving idiot? Terry Brown anyone? Every "producer" since has been a mistake, hence the continual search. Perhaps Terry is the Watchmaker... Couldn't be any worse. He's good enough for my favorite musicians, RUSH. What else is there? You're not hiring him. It's not your band. It's not your studio or your album. You're not affiliated with RUSH in a creative or professional manner. Your opinion on their staff and collaborations is meaningless. Irrelevant. And quite moronic because you think it matters what you think. This.
  18. Definitely one of my favorites so far along with The Wreckers and The Garden. The only track I'm really lacking appreciation for right now is Wish Them Well... but we'll see what happens. I knew after the clips this was going to be one of the better ones.
