alphseeker
One reports estimates that 800 thoroughbreds die each year in North America because of injuries suffered during racing. 7 more just this past week, here in San Diego. http://msn.foxsports.com/horseracing/story/5824524

Edge of Traction
I'll weigh in, why not? I think that we tend to view thoroughbreds, greyhounds, etc in the same way that we view all 'athletes'. They're expected to do whatever it takes to stay competitive and an unfortunate by-product is that they have a short lifespan, either career-wise or literally, as is the case in the article that you posted. Personally, I'm not a big fan of horse racing, and I love animals, so I wouldn't be bugged if it just went away.
