    Hmmm... I'm not sure if these would be the perfect fit for a CD, but looking through Rush's catalogue, these would definitely be my choices for Neil's best lyrical accomplishments (in alphabetical order I suppose):

     

    Afterimage (Loss)

    Armor and Sword (The volatile nature of personal convictions)

    Between the Wheels (The volatile nature of entire societies)

    Circumstances (Well, different circumstances lol)

    Entre Nous (Interpersonal understanding)

    Faithless (The importance of finding what's right for yourself)

    Freewill (Obviously)

    Resist (Personal struggle)

    Scars (Significant events and their impact)

    Territories (The insignificance of possession)

    The Pass (Not giving up)

    Witch Hunt (Mob mentality and the consequences of ignorance)

     

    Honorable mentions: The Spirit of Radio, The Trees, Time Stand Still, Vital Signs.

     

     

    It seems I actually picked quite a few different from you tongue.gif But I think your list works really well as a "theme", it seems to have quite a few songs from around the same era, not just of music but of Neil's thoughts. I just picked the strongest messages regardless of any coherent time period biggrin.gif

    I don't sacrifice ranking to avoid seeming unbiased. For instance, I definitely would rather listen to most of Power Windows before most of Vapor Trails, and my list reflects that.

    The intro to Faithless is dark? It sounds really upbeat and "springy" to me. Do you mean Spindrift or another song?

     

    Edit: Also, a third done with the list and you're still only at 5.5/10? Do you not particularly care for Rush music? laugh.gif

    Cheeseball song with a cheeseball concept, good thing it has that awesome synthy PoW instrument sound to save it big time. The ending guitar solo makes for one of the most memorable Rush moments. 6.5/10

    Ha, well I respect his list just as much, and his idea. Glad you're enjoying mine. Keep in mind though, it's just mine, and I know I'm going to spark some controversy here and there, but I'm trying to focus on just how much feeling the song has, how much it means, the atmosphere, and the way the lyrics fit the music, as well as the complexity and difficulty of the music, and ultimately how much the song can actually mean to one person rather than so many, but at the same time how the song can mean something to many people.

     

    I think Deckiller's list is based around his favorites rather than my way of ranking. Of course, biases are falling into my list, but I don't think they're as present as they are in Deckiller's.

    For me, I sometimes find something to disagree with in your break down of a song, but when I look at the actual placement you've given for that song, I'm often right on the same page. There hasn't been anything crazy yet, nothing with more than +/- 5 error in my mind.

     

    As long as you don't put Middletown Dreams within the next 50 spots, I'll stay on board laugh.gif

    I like this song a lot, but that's just me. It's very similar to The Twilight Zone, I guess...especially in the sense that both songs have gone to the Twilight Zone of the Rush repertoire. It's a nice little song with a decent intro, spooky verses, and a haunting bridge.

    That haunting bridge is the highlight of the song. But because everything just kind of falls flat...a lot of the song is just forgettable. Some people are turned off of this song because it's "decent," some because of the lyrics, some because it's just part of the Snakes And Arrows album. But really, this is not a bad song...it's above your average song...just not above your average Rush song.

    That bridge is definitely worth listening to...it's the only thing that saves this song from being placed in the bottom 30. The fact that the spooky verses kind of build up to this bridge is very neat, and the strings in the background are great too. It's just unfortunate that this bridge kind of just flows by because of the rest of the lackluster song.

    Good News First is the third best track on Snakes and Arrows.... unsure.gif

    Uh, no. You can't just say that about anyone you don't like and expect it to go over. EVH has plenty of emotion in his playing. If you want to see emotionless, maybe something like Yngwie Malmsteen would work. But not EVH. Maybe he's just playing too fast for you to hear laugh.gif

    I guess it's just a different opinion. I don't feel anything when EVH plays

    Well, I'm a musician and can feel what he puts into the music, the difficulty and emotion. Maybe that's the difference?
