  1. those who will say "who cares, it's rolling stone"- stay out of my rant thread... ok, lifeson...98th out of 100. really?!? i don't read the magazine, but saw it in the bookstore and wanted to see how off they were. glad to see at least he made there list. but fooking bonnie rait, and mike campbell are higher up than alex. not to mention slash and willie f-ing nelson...how about joni mitchell? yes i am biased. but i also am a fair person. prince and mark knopfler are not better guitarists that lerxt. if you think so, you should get your head examined. or go work for rolling stone. what bothers me is that all the young kids who pick this mag up would be turned on to such "talents" as J mascis and Nels Cline before alex based on rolling stone's garbage of a list. as a rush fan, i don't mind the lack of respect from national press...but DISRESPECT is an entirely different ballgame. oh and how about derek trucks (who is higher than both randy rhoads and carlos santana)? what the hell is wrong with people? at least they had hendrix at #1...and jimmy page right up where he belongs...no stve vai? no eric johnson? Steve morse or steve howe? NO...not god enough. but: jack white and ron ashton yes! i'd like to see a pole from guys taken at guitar shows across the US and see how different their list would be. even players who are not rush fans give alex credit for being pure awesomeness.... SUCK IT ROLLING STONE. if i got your magazine as a gift i would recycle it. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/10...arists-20111123
  2. QUOTE (ytserush @ Nov 5 2011, 10:04 PM) In a weird moment of karma, I had just gotten back from the store and was about to put the DVD on when I noticed it was already on VH 1 Classic. I paused for a second before going right to the bonus features and watching the concert after that. I wasn't there, but I'd imagine this DVD (although trying very hard) doesn't not even come close to capturing what it was like to be there. I can't even believe what I'm watching on this DVD. (I mean I like Neil's DVD and all but this is just insane!) from the store with the TM dvd?? wtf?
  3. AARRRHHHHHHHHG!!!! It was on yesterday (nov 4) and i didn't hear until today- will be on again, but who saw it 'round here?? wadda ya think?!?
  4. QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Nov 3 2011, 02:47 PM) There was a bit of a trainwreck on the performance. Neil missed a cue or something. So they borrowed a piece of music from an earlier part of the song and inserted it over the trainwreck. In the finished edit, you'd never know there was anything done unless you were at that show and remember the miscue. or perhaps you see it on youtube...
  5. QUOTE (youngoldman @ Nov 3 2011, 01:25 PM) Nice title for Alex's solo. My son and I saw them at The Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, SC back in June and I liked Alex playing a 12 string acoustic for his solo, and when he went in to the intro of "Closer..." the whole place just erupted and sang most of the song with Geddy. (I do wish he would just go out there with his electric and shred for a few minutes.) ya- at least the shred intro to lavila.

  7. QUOTE (RUDT @ Oct 30 2011, 06:59 AM) Who cares about those little funny videos. Rush's music is serious, don't let that spoiled by videos. We have enough videos during the concert who is 3 hours, they should also think of remove those back screen videos forever tell us how you really feel broseph! i agree!
  8. amusingly and appropriately titled: "O'Malley's Break" thought there was a thread about what it shold be called back when they were touring. just saw the title on the iTunes info. can't wait!!! one week! at least for the CD for sure.
  9. if freaking Guns and Roses gets into the rock n roll hall of fame, before RUSH...i know the RR HOF is a joke and we all see the irony of the BEST rock band ever not being inducted, but guns and roses?? how about the cure??and who the bloddy hell are: he small faces? (they even changed their name to just: "the faces"... i have never been so proud to be a cleveland native when they announced the time machine tour filming- but this new set of inductees for the rock hall makes me want to
  10. people who don't like perfect songs...
  11. QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Jul 26 2011, 11:20 AM) Maybe the reason it's taking so long is that Alex and Geddy are arguing about how many layers of guitars to have on the final release. Better that than arguing about keyboard layers!
  12. QUOTE (Dobner has assumed control @ Jul 3 2011, 07:27 PM) Yes the fellas definitely dabbled in drug use. But you know what? A toke or two of Mary Jane never hurt anyone dude- have you ever seen "reefer madness"??
  13. anyone who votes for hemispheres should have their head examined.
  14. QUOTE (Scars @ Jul 1 2011, 07:09 PM) ONLY two? I think if given the option, I'd be dumping half the setlist... OUT: Faithless Workin' Them Angels The fact that S&A has 3 songs yet Fly By Night, Caress Of Steel, Grace Under Pressure, Roll The Bones, Test For Echo, and Vapor Trails don't even get touched ticked me off. So to compensate for at least some of those albums, I'd put in Test for Echo and Dreamline. dreamline??...
  15. QUOTE (Drummerrobin @ Jun 29 2011, 05:50 PM) Hemispheres for me.
  16. QUOTE (drbirdsong @ Jun 30 2011, 09:05 AM) QUOTE (trenken @ Jun 29 2011, 12:16 PM) QUOTE (StellarJetman @ Jun 28 2011, 10:51 PM) John Petrucci. Well yeah, obviously he destroys both of these guys, but I think its more appropriate to compare Eddie and Alex because they are fairly similar and closer to each other in terms of ability. Neither of them can touch Petrucci though so thats not a fair comparison. He can rip a solo and absolutely bury Alex and Eddie all day, but he also knows how to keep it simple too when it needs to be. You rarely see that in quitarists with his skill level. They usually just shred all the time but he has a lot of feeling in his playing. He has a lot of the same qualities as Alex but he's a far better technical player. Watch this. I clicked the link and watched all 7:18 of it. Well, watched a bit because I had to close my eyes so I wouldn't dismiss it as hair metal noodling. I kept waiting for the brilliance and didn't find it. The man is talented and technically proficient and incredibly boring. I'll always like guitarists like Alex Lifeson or Steve Howe or even Keith Richards more than guys like that or Eddie Van Halen because they have soul in their playing. It's just my opinion and we all like what we like, but I think without soul and a little bit of blues the electric guitar sounds cold. shredding in general sounds cold to most. i am with you. i wsa just comparing paul and yngwie to JP. buckethead, gus g., joe satriani- those guys can flat out SH A RED... but i'd rather hear lifeson or jimmy page too. let's face it shredding is not for the faint of heart

JP is a great player, but his band is on the boring side IMO. saw them open for maiden last year...ho-humm is my lasting impression. if you're looking for pure shredding with flavor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj3ec2cCaJw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES1RypBww_g&feature=related
  18. QUOTE (InvisibleAirwaves13 @ Jun 29 2011, 03:28 PM) Eddie was a Rock Guitar innovator. He is the reason Hair bands got so popular and thousands of young boys went out and bought a guitar to try and learn how to play like this amazing musician. Alex matches Eddie in feeling but is a far more skilled guitarist. Lerxst is innovative in Prog Rock circles and because his phrasing and soloing are so difficult is the reason those boys sold their guitars on eBay! This is truly Apples and Oranges... I have to give the edge to Alex for his continued innovativeness and longevity. Eddie inspired me when I was young...Alex has inspired me all my life. End of line.... yes, but as much as EVH influenced guitarists as a player- he did even more so as an innovative guitar designer!

Fail No, he didn't fail there. He's saying that while Eddie has more technical skill, Alex is a better overall guitarist because of everything else he brings to the table. His post explains all that very clearly. Maybe YOU failed for picking out that one sentence instead of reading his whole post. Well said!
  20. QUOTE (druid13 @ Jun 28 2011, 02:28 PM) Flea...great tone? Ha ha ....and those guys you think 'no one cares about'? Are you kidding? Talk to some bass players outside of rock and prog and see if they don't care about them. Steve Harris...great tone? ....come on. "great" is a debatable word. but recognizable is not, and when anyone with half a brain hears steve play, they know right away it's him. ask geddy what he thinks about steve harris. how many players on that list still tour and have millions of hardcore fans?? hmm? crickets.... delta bravo you are.
