  1. It's not implausible but given the out-of-time sequences of Lost I can really see more of Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun" in Lost. With the abrupt start of the series with Jack in the belt buckle compared to Severian's near drowning at the beginning of that book and all the subsequent odd time events there...and the whole idea that there are more than one Jack/Severian completing their journey's and staring over at the beginning. The cast of characters that move in & out of Lost is much more like "BNS" that Dark Tower.

That book is complex & difficult but I can see flashes of it in that show, more so than King's books. Really we'll have to wait and see but to me there's more Severian in Jack than Roland.

It's not a History of Middle-Earth type book. Christopher essentially took the tale of Hurin in all it's various forms & made one cohesive story; he fleshes out the story in more detail. It's pretty well done & I enjoyed it but if you know the story then it's nothing new.

JRR has said that there's essentially 3 tales that are the heart of the Silmarillion: Beren & Luthien, The Tale of Hurin & The Fall of Gondolin. Since he's tackled Hurin I would not be suprised to see Christopher attempt the same with the other two.

I figured he already has tackled these w/ "Lost Tales." (Excepting Beren and Luthien.)

You have probably read those, as have I. Some of the more complete works that exist in scraps are informative and entertaining. I think his son has mined them for all they are worth, and is just scraping the dregs for more cash. Either that, or he is just repackaging what already exists, for the same aforementioned purpose.

Yeah I've read Lost Tales and basically everything Tolkien. Without doubt part of Christopher's motivation is the fact that loser fans like me will vacuum up anything new coming out of Middle-Earth and the cash rolls in. On the other hand I would like to have the Fall of Gondolin gone over from scratch and made into it's own stand alone story. I think that story has potential for great drama and with the way he did Hurin you don't really have to know any of the back story or have read the Silmarillion (although most who buy that book already have) the way he's filled in the story.

Anyway my loser geek dream would have been for Tolkien (JRR that is) to weave the Silmarillion and all that pre-history into LOTR so there could have been one big all-encompassing volume.

  6. I tried Stone PA for the first time last week and I'm hooked, loved it. Next for me is the IPA and if I'm up to it the Ruination. Years ago at a campfire someone passed around Arrogant Bastard... ohmy.gif ...that shit was undrinkable to me. I don't know if I'll ever be able to work my way up to it. But it won't be from lack of effort!

[soapbox]What's the deal with all these flavored beers and stouts? Chocolate? Cranberry? Blueberry? (Blueberry, for the love of God!) Stout should taste like stout, ale should taste like ale, and beer should taste like beer. Stop putting sh*t in it. What are you, a bunch of girls? If you have to flavor your beer, then go back to drinking Coke (if that's not too harsh-tasting for your delicate sensibilities) you're making us regular beer, ale, and stout drinkers look bad![/soapbox]

Edit: I'm not trying to pick a fight here, I simply don't get it. However, I honestly believe that any man caught drinking a fruity-flavored beer/stout/ale should have to mow his yard in a dress or something like that.

laugh.gif But chocolate is not a fruit, your honor...

It's supposed to be FUN. I like an unflavored stout as much as the next person, but chocolate works, I think. I haven't tried the blueberry, that would be kinda weird. I do like the idea of mixing the chocolate with raspberry lambic, though. Damn, I feel like I'm being accused of drinking Zima with grenadine. laugh.gif

This talk of flavoring and concocting reminds me of this beer I tried at Goose Island (a big Chicago brewpub) a number of years ago. I think it was a bock, but they used casks that were used to make Jim Beam. I'm not a whiskey drinker, period, but I really liked what that twist brought to the beer. What do you think of that one?

That sounds pretty good. I'd try it.

Off topic a little but the Lexington Brewing Company makes an ale that is stored in freshly used bourbon barrels and makes a damn fine drink.

Amazing movie. One of the best I've seen. Almost on the level of V for Vendetta, I'd say; the two are similar and yet much different.

Children of Men is a great film I think. It's one of those that seems to require multiple viewings in order to catch all that goes on. I think it's waaaayyy better than V for Vendetta, I was so looking forward to V but it left me underwhelmed and fell a bit flat for me. I may have to give it another go on DVD.

I don't think Rush has a single overrated song. no.gif

I agree with that. Most people stopped caring about Rush after the mid 80s. From then on it was just the hardcore fans left, and most people seem to really hate the work they put out since. If Rush put out a country record, many of the hardcore fans would tell you it's great because it's Rush. But most people in the world dont view things that way, and to them Rush has been a garbage band for a very long time now. Doesn't matter to me, I still like most of those albums aside from T4E.

It's music and people are going to have opinions. We all fell in love with Rush's music at some point or another, and when you build a deep affection to a band and their music, it becomes much easier to like music you may not normally have liked. I don't like lite rock at all, yet I still like Presto and RTB. If those exact albums were put out by another band I would probably hate them, but ive found a way to like them just because it's Rush. I hate both of those albums for at least the first 10 listens, but I grew to like them. If they werent from Rush I wouldnt have gotten past the first listen.

I don't know if music fans in general feel that Rush is a garbage band since the mid-80's but I agree with alot of your post.

I listened to HYF after a long time yesteday. What a beautiful piece of work. The music is so dynamic and there's such beautiful song writing and deeply moving lyrics. A very heartfelt and contemplative record. A lot here don't like it. For some reason lately, I too have tended to skp this album a lot, but I feel I'm missing out! It's a very poppish sounding record by classic Rush standards, but also very colorful and with good range. The whole record has a really dynamic and deep personality.

Listen to the lyrics of Second Nature. Absolutely beautiful. Talks so much about social bonds and the distances between us. The lyrics cry out for a more compassionate and generous world. Brings tears to my eyes sometimes.

I love HYF. Think there's some great songs on there for the most part (a couple I can't stand but that's OK). I'm glad they decided to get away from the synth sound after it & I agree with their saying that it was they were looking for in that synth period. I listen to it a lot.

Better than RTB by a mile...oh & Presto too.
