  1. H-D another bit of advice....regarding Porcupine Tree itself.. I notice you have the 5 most recent PT albums...nothing wrong with that all are fantastic...and the album before LBS (Stupid Dream) is similar to those records as well..albiet a bit lighter. However if you plan to go through the PT back catalog I'd advise a bit of caution.. the first few albums are very different styilistically from the PT youve heard...hell PT was not a full band until album 4, mainly Steven Wilson doing all the song by himself and playing every instrument...Musically its great but different from the PT you have, its more of a Psychedellic Avant Guard prog.. I dont reccoment diving right into the first few PT albums right away...instead go for the "Stars Die:Dilireum Years" compilation, or the "Coma Devine" live album for a taster of what PT was like during their first 4 records.
  2. H-D for some frame of reference... Steven Wilson had just come of remixing alot of the first few King Crimson records when he made Grace for Downing...which largly influenced its sound, his first solo cd (insurgentes) is different from GFD....I loved GFD so to each his own I guess.....he is actually in the process of a third solo album now and from the sound "luminol" (a track that will be on the 3rd album) it will be very similar to GFD, very King Crimson esk jazzy prog....but yes veeery different from PT.... Thoug he also has other projects as well you might like Blackfield: Shorter pop-prog...probably the most similar to PT out of all his side projects No-Man: mellow alternative the oldest of his projects even older than PT Bass Communion: Drone bass music...i dont care for this Storm Corrosion: his project with Mikael Akerfeldt of opeth...VERY mellow prog..with an almost krautrock feel

QUOTE (treeduck @ Aug 12 2012, 07:27 PM) QUOTE (The Owl @ Aug 11 2012, 06:21 PM) Excited about the new season... though I have to admit that after moving back to Texas I have followed Houston more than Tennessee.... and can admit that my loyalties have flipped over to the Texans... though Tennessee (and the original Houston team) remain my second favorite team.. ...hey at least I didn't switch to the Dallas Cowgirls. Owl you're a Houston Oilers fan, and neither of these teams are the Oilers. You've got to forget lal this Oilers stuff and throw your support behind THE SAINTS!! I do like New Orleans... 3rd favorite behind Houston, and Tennessee

  9. DK: Glad you finally caught on to why I was throwing barrels at you... You can't beat DK homebrew.
  10. Favorite out of those choices....Floyd. 2nd favorite band out of all time.. But favorite "prog band" I voted for Yes... more on point with the genera, completely vibed prog
  11. Two Things 1. I think one of the reasons that The Hobbit is gonna be a three parter is that they had too much footage shot..knowing Jackson. They probably had around 6 and 1/2 to 7 hours in the can and realized it would be too much for two films and would have to wind up cutting 45 min to an hour (Around 25 on each film) of footage for a theatrical release... Having a third film allows them to avoid heartbreaking edits, and would also allow for three "reasonably length" films (2 hours or so) as opposed to 2 super long films (hovering around the 3 hour mark that each of the LOTR films were)... Though if this is the case I would not expect LOTR-esk extended editions down the road as I would thing there will be less that is cut now that we have 3 films.. 2. As far as Tom Bombadil and Scouring of the Shire go and why they were cut from the film. They would just not work on film, as they did on page...simple enough. - Tom Bombadil is an amazing character in the books, and his meeting with Frodo and Co. on the way from the Shire to Bree is a great scene.... but would utterly stop the film dead if adapted... Not only would it overextend the already 3 hour film (theatrical mind you, not extended) but having your main characters who are traveling from A to B would abruptly stop any sense of pacing you had by meeting this new character, but ruin the tension that the film was building knowing they are being hunted by the Nazgul...As a book reader I miss the scene in the film, but completely understand it not being there. - The Scouring of the Shire is another great scene in the books, that works for said medium, but is utterly a scene you cannot have on film... by this point in the movie you have had resolution, the ring is destroyed, Frodo Lives and is honored, Aagorn is crowned, evil is defeated...etc. To suddenly throw another big conflict in after said resolution as the Hobbits return to the Shire would not work at all, Film is just not the medium for that narrative structure in storytelling, it would alienate the viewer and destroy said earlier resolution, and completely confound the pacing going towards the film's end. - Though both of these scenes were spiritually recognized within the LOTR film trilogy, alot of Tom Bombadil's lines were given to Treebeard in the film, and Frodo's vison when he looks into Galadriel's mirror in the first film is an homage to the Scouring.

  13. QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Aug 7 2012, 09:46 PM) QUOTE (The Owl @ Aug 7 2012, 09:34 PM) For those who like Jon Davidson... check out his main gig "Glass Hammer" great band.. I listened to their last album when it was on progstreaming. It sounded a bit too much like Yes. I've heard that their older albums are much different. Their older albums are much better, Chronomolree and the Middle Earth albums are fantastic...
  14. the following pic contains gratuitous amounts of EPIC... view with caution . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.swillwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Bad-Exterminator-Unit-TeeFury-Shirt-of-the-Day.jpg
  15. Live at the Marquee is very good as well...
  16. For those who like Jon Davidson... check out his main gig "Glass Hammer" great band.. I liked Benoit David... and was actually familiar with him before being asked to join Yes... his regular group "Mystery" is very good as well... and I felt alot of the Yes community of fans were a bit unfair to him... simply for the fact that he was not Jon Anderson.
  17. The thing about the Chaos in Motion release is the less than great quality on the production (both Cd and DVD)... I actually listened to this the other day......but it was the intent of the release. Mike described with Chaos in motion that people should expect a release similar to "Once in a Livetime" and that is essentially what was delivered. Not too much of an issue, but I like single show, good production live releases a bit more...but the Chaos release is still great.. (Petricci throwing in the solo fro "mother" in Surrounded was amazing)
  18. Mostly Autumn has a new album out as well... totally slipped under my radar... http://www.mostly-autumn.com/mostlyautumnrecords/3/products/The_Ghost_Moon_Orchestra/MAOpt201.jpg Unfortunately this group STILL does not have a U.S distributer, but it's worth the extra cost to pay for the import.
