  1. I've heard a number of complaints that Picard suffers from slow pacing... I couldn't disagree more. The deliberate pacing reminds me of a show like Better Call Saul, where the story has room to breathe and offer the attention to detail that Discovery so badly lacked as it haphazardly skipped across the touchpoints it needed to hit to stretch the plot.

No, it seems that Picard is paced perfectly. And Patrick Stewart is absolutely CRUSHING IT as an actor.

I think im gonna cancel Disney and sign up for CBS all access

  2. The first episode gets an 8.5/10 from me.

I love the deliberate pacing. I love that there is actually a message and heart to the story. I love the feel that Patrick Stewart has brought back to Jean Luc. The small glimpses of 24th (25th?) century aesthetic we saw were visually on point.

There was a little bit of ham fisted exposition to get the story set up, and that compounded the discomfort of the interview scene. I felt like that part could've been handled better. It's a lot of background to establish, and I wish they could've established it more clearly and gracefully.

But outside of that misstep, I loved it. I can't wait for more.

This reviewer was not so kind

Can Star Trek: Picard recover from its bafflingly bad premiere?

  3. With the show launching in about 12 hours, I'm getting very excited. I'll be staying up tonight to watch the moment it goes live.

Season two has already been ordered, and will be including Whoopi Goldberg, presumably reprising her role as Guinan. It's also been hinted that season two could involve Worf or other TNG castmembers. Also encouraging is that season two's showrunner is a throwback to the 'Berman era' (90s) of Star Trek, who wrote and worked on some terrific episodes of Voyager and Enterprise.

Despite the doubts, I'm feeling confident that this is going to be the show that sets up Star Trek's return to glory.

are they releasing the whole season or is it a one episode a week thing?

  4. Neil Peart family ‘on board’ with a St. Catharines memorial

Neil Peart's family is enthusiastically supporting plans for a memorial at Lakeside Park, honouring the famous drummer who grew up in St. Catharines.

As thousands of Rush fans from all over the world continue to add their names to a petition calling for a statue or plaque to be built at the park the band made famous in song, Peart's nephew Jason Howe said the family has discussed the idea and are "fully on board" with such plans.

"They think it's a great honour," said Howe, a St. Catharines resident.

As of Sunday afternoon, more than 22,100 people had added their name to a petition calling on the city to honour Peart with a plaque or statue at the Port Dalhousie park.

  5. Saddest part to me isn't even that he died, but what he had to endure while alive. He loses his first family within a short timespan and then barely gets time with his second before being stricken with freakin' brain cancer. WTF. :(

Yes. He was blessed in so many ways and got to live a life most of us could only dream of. On the flip side, he endured some of the worst tragedies life could dish out.

I shed a few tears the first couple of days.

  6. One might consider this good news but it still makes me sad.

In the wake of the death of drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, who passed away on Jan. 7 after a three-year battle with brain cancer, Rush’s music has seen a massive surge in streams and sales. According to Billboard, streams of the band’s songs rose 776 percent in the U.S. and sales have increased well over 2,000 percent.

While Peart passed away on Jan. 7, news of his death broke on Friday, Jan. 10. According to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, between Jan. 10–13 on-demand audio and video streams of Rush’s catalog increased to a combined 24.53 million, up over 776 percent -- compared to the previous three days – which garnered 2.8 million streams.

The power trio’s most-streamed song (between Jan. 10-13) was the 1981 Moving Pictures hit “Tom Sawyer,” with 2.83 million streams boosting some 305 percent compared to just 698,000 streams between Jan. 6-9.

Sales of Rush songs climbed over 2,300 percent to 19,000 from 1,000, while the group’s album sales leaped over 1,800 percent to more than 6,000 copies.

Billboard also reports that Peart’s death will have an impact on next week’s charts and will likely see their best-of collection The Spirit of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974 – 1987 enter the Billboard 200 chart.

In other related news, Peart’s death sent fans scrambling to dig deeper into his lyrics. According to Billboard’s LyricFind U.S. and LyricFind Global charts (which ranks the most searched song lyrics), Rush dominates the top 25 with 23 songs in the global chart and 18 out of 25 spots on the U.S. chart. It’s no surprise the top search was for “Tom Sawyer,” but other songs on the list include “Limelight,” “The Trees,” “The Temples of Syrinx,” “The Garden,” “Losing It,” “Closer to the Heart,” and 1984’s “Afterimage,” which has the chill-inducing opening line “Suddenly, you were gone / From all the lives you left your mark upon.”

  7. GREAT tribute page from Hudson Music. Very long with many, many people weighing in with personal accounts of Neil. Well done Hudson Music!

    https://hudsonmusic.com/neil-peart/

    Fantastic and humbling.

I love this line from Michael Hoff

"A quote I read just after his passing sums it up succinctly: “This man is your favorite drummer’s FAVORITE DRUMMER”. I can’t think of a better way to sum up his influence on so many…"

  8. Neil Peart statue pitched for Lakeside Park in St. Catharines

Kelly Edgar says he enthusiastically added his name to an online petition calling on the City of St. Catharines to honour Rush drummer Neil Peart.

The petition — launched on website change.org by St. Catharines resident Tony McLaughlin following reports of Peart's death last week — calls on the city to commemorate his ties to the community by erecting a plaque or statue of him at Lakeside Park — a place the celebrated lyricist immortalized in song.

As of Monday afternoon, the petition had garnered nearly 9,000 names.

"Neil spent a lot of his youth in Port Dalhousie as can be heard in the famous song he penned 'Lakeside Park,'" McLaughlin wrote in the petition, calling such an initiative "an amazing tribute."

  9. Heavens yes, Ged and Al knew. Just as Queen were told by Freddy. No way were they disrespecting Neil in that manner. It would be "hew to the line of right, and let the chips fall where they may". And so much the better for us all, imho.

Unless Neil cut off complete contact with Geddy and Alex, the both of them absolutely did know. This would have also meant that Neil's wife and daughter would have not been in communication with either of them as well. Drummer Mike Portnoy mentioned on social media yesterday after the news broke that he was aware of Neil's health issues. If he knew there is no way Geddy and Alex didn't.

It would be like not telling your brothers and sisters. No way would he keep it from Geddy & Alex.

They knew. A friend of mine is a roadie for a pretty popular classic rock band and a lot of people in that circle knew. He told me on the down low a few months ago. It was a gut punch even back then but I had hoped that Neil could somehow pull through.

  10. Grateful to see that I'm not the only prodigal returning here today.

Those who remember me know that I was by turns amused by, challenged by, and enthralled by Neil's words. I will forever be thankful I went searching online for clips of Neil's appearance on Politically Incorrect, all those many years ago. That search is what led me to this place and some of the best people I've ever been honored to call friends.

I love you guys. You all know who you are. Thank you for making my life immeasurably better.

Rest in peace, Neil... I am just shocked and saddened...

Virtual group hug, you guys. :rose:

this is a sight for sore eyes

There's something reassuring in knowing this community exists, as it seems so many of us had the same thought on hearing the news...

It has definitely brought a lot of the TRF family back together. Weddings and funerals... :(

  12. In this one of many possible worlds,

All for the best or some bizarre test?

It is what it is and whatever,

Time is still the infinite jest

The arrow flies when you dream,

    The hours tick away,

    The cells tick away

The Watchmaker keeps to his schemes,

The hours tick away, they tick away

The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect,

So hard to earn so easily burned

The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect,

So hard to earn so easily burned

    In the fullness of time,

A garden to nurture and protect

In the rise and the set of the sun,

    'Til the stars go spinning,

    Spinning 'round the night

Oh, it is what it is, and forever

Each moment a memory in flight

The arrow flies while you breathe,

    The hours tick away,

    The cells tick away,

The Watchmaker has time up his sleeve,

The hours tick away, they tick away

The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect,

So hard to earn so easily burned

    In the fullness of time,

A garden to nurture and protect

    (It's a measure of a life)

The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect,

The way you live, the gifts that you give

    In the fullness of time,

It's the only return that you expect

    The future disappears into memory

    With only a moment between.

    Forever dwells in that moment,

Hope is what remains to be seen.

    Forever dwells in that moment,

Hope is what remains to be seen.

    In the fullness of time,

A garden to nurture and protect

    (It's a measure of a life)

not sure I can ever listen to this again
