Former singer Charlie Dominici died today.

    RIP

Very sad. Played that first album into the ground for almost three years thinking it would be the only one. Was lucky enough to see Dream Theater open up for Marillion in '89 not knowing they were the opening band until I turned the corner and saw them on the marquee (Spelled wrong of course.)

His three solo album projects are very ambitious and they're good for what they are but the last two are a bit too "metal" for me.

Very nice guy too. Bought an autographed album flat when he was raising money for a move or a tour or something. Think he was also in Frankie and the Knockouts in the early '80s.

But imagine if they passed it off as a 'drum battle' kind of collaboration, could be called An Evening with DT & Mike²

Portnoy's never really been a drum solo/drum battle kind of guy. He doesn't seem to be very creative in that sense. He can do the Exit... Stage Left solo fairly well.

There was never a band like Rush. Geddy Lee doesn’t want to forget it.
It took a series of losses for the high-voiced rock star to confront his personal history. It all came out in his new memoir.

    By Geoff Edgers

Growing up in Toronto in the 1960s, the greasers teased him about the size of his nose and joked that he rode to school on the “Jew bus.”

It was only when he became friends with Steve Shutt — a future Hall of Fame hockey star — that the bullying let up.

While his mother worked long hours at the family discount store, Lee and his siblings were left either with their deeply religious grandmother Bubbe Rose or largely to their own devices.  Lee took to going to rock concerts with Shutt, and one day they both bought bass guitars.  A couple of weeks later, Shutt was at Lee’s house when Lee put a record on and started playing along.

“He’s just playing it. Boom, boom, boom, boom,” Shutt recalled. “And that’s when I knew Ged was going to be a bassist, and I was going to be a hockey player.”

Mary, boggled by the cultural upheaval of the decade, was unimpressed with her son’s musical acumen — and infuriated by his ever-growing hair.

Rather than have a bar mitzvah photo taken of her son, Mary commissioned an artist to create a portrait. In the painting, she could keep his hair cropped.

“She would go into his room with a scissors when he was sleeping,” remembers Susie, his sister.  “And I remember coming after her and grabbing her and going, no, no, no, you can’t do this.”

How did I miss this today? Guess I'm going back to read it.

I just looked at the audiobook version on Audible and it has both Ged and Alex listed as narrators!

That seals it -- I'm getting the audio version. I've got a long drive in December and I'd love to listen to both of them tell the stories.

I'll bet they'll use snippets of the music too.

    Excited for this!

And Cliff Bernstein.  I was hoping for a regular audio version but it looks like it's only available in mp3  so a library might be my best bet because I'm not shelling out $40 for mp3?  I'll keep checking it out from the library.

Oh don't get me wrong, i love BC but truth be told, whilst other albums really got better in time, I don't see that one as a classic. Personal fave, yes. Is it one of their best? No, not remotely.

Don't really dig the first two songs A Nightmare To Remember and A Rite Of Passage but I really dig the rest of it and the bonus disc. But again, this album doesn't push the Dream Theater envelope very far.

the most you can hope for is i think a return to something closer to Systematic Chaos (which i hate) but if your a fan this news should thrill yoiu.

and for people getting excited about rotating sets lists these guys are like 60 how much rotating you think a lot of em would be willing to do, lol

At the very least I'm hoping for more hooks and melody.

Oh certainly he’ll roll the knob off of other projects.

Look I’m interested to hear what they do…but frankly I’d just rather they stuck with Mangini.

I feel bad for Mangini but it doesn't really matter to me. I just hope they lose their by numbers book.

Would have been great if both Mikes were in the band, but hauling around two kits on a tour probably don't make good business sense, but it sure would be awesome to experience.

  8. This is Dream Theater announcing their retirement without Dream Theater announcing their retirement. Was a lot more shocked  a few days ago than I was in 2010. Don't much care about this one way or the other. Whatever works. Feel bad for Mangini (one of the good people.)

I was surprised when Charlie got fired, but understood after hearing him live. I was gutted when Kevin Moore left, but understood after hearing Chroma Key. I was over the moon when Derek got dumped and Jordan joined the band. Mike Mangini was the right drummer for the band in 2010 even though I'd have preferred Marco.

I'm hoping for something ground breaking but I probably shouldn't be. I doubt there's going to be a paradigm shift at this point. Portnoy probably adds another $50 to my next Dream Theater ticket. If they venture out of their comfort zone, it will be totally worth it.

I sent a message to C-SPAN to ask if a reading could be included in their weekend programming, dubbed "Television for Serious Readers."  You can too.

May not be a problem as the dates are already set up unless there are licensing issues with Live Nation or someone else.

    Yes.

I’ve seen him live a couple times.

He was not helped by the dated production on his biggest albums.

Seeing him live was an entirely

    different thing. Loud, heavy, funky.

It helped that Chad Wackerman and Jimmy Johnson were his rhythm section when I saw him at the baked potato.

That must have been special.  Passed on his last few dates playing the Irdium  mostly because it cost more to get to New York these days than than ticket prices there.

I have heard many guitar players – Alex Lifeson in particular – talk about Holdsworth as an influence… And I have never listened to him.

Are there any fans here? Anyone who can suggest a good place to start a journey of discovery?

Anything with his name on it.  Wish I'd seen him live. Almost did in the years before he died. But you figure guys like that should be around forever. Like Jeff Beck.

IOU Live in Japan 1984 is sitting in a small pile of CD's I'd like to get to this weekend.

I just pre-ordered the audiobook, that's probably as close as I'll come to hearing him (Alex makes an appearance on the audio too ).  Would be nice if someone could record these talks and sell them.

Since Geddy is reading it pretty much makes this essential too.

I doubt it.  I can imagine Ged would get sick of doing this after a while, and to be honest, I'm surprised he's doing as many dates as he is.

It's probably really good money for him, but he's pretty comfortable already, and just sitting there talking about yourself on stage for a couple hours a night has to get old quick (at least for anyone without a Trump-sized ego).

That could go either way. This eases him back into the touring mindset and he may be doing some recon about the feasibility going forward. Also this is a lot more structured than his last book signing tour which was very informal. If he doesn't like the way the machine is working these days he could just stop.

Dream Theater had a really nice cover of Different Strings they played for some club dates in the late 90's.

I agree - missed opportunity for Rush.

In general, Dream Theater used to play Rush songs that either were never played live or had not been played live in decades.
