Thanks for posting this. It's very interesting.  Though the mention they cataloged the vault there is no specific mention of any live material in this conversation. There's evidence that there is a vault but no evidence of what's in there aside from work in progress demos which kind of dispel the myth that there are no demos.

I'm optimistic that we will see robust GUP 40th AND Rush 50th next year...Geddy and Alex are still vital and eager to put themselves out there.

They are putting themselves out there. Alex was just shredding with Tool, working on Envy Of None and who knows what else and Geddy is on his book tour and released to new songs.. They're moving forward not back.

It was pretty clear he isn't a professional interviewer but he did a passable job. I thought he talked too much about himself and his life. He also had some tangential comparisons and off the wall references.

That's the first time I've been in that theater and it's beautiful. We were in the first balcony and the view was great.

Had first row in the balcony at my show. Clear view and a very relaxing evening.

  4. Finished six chapters. Have to force myself to slow down. (Trying to balance it by reading Romano's Moving Pictures which obviously isn't nearly as good in comparison) More than a quarter of the way through and they just got to the first album. Seems like a lot is going to be left out. (Still want a copy of the 1200 page manuscript.) Love the pictures, didn't realize some of them were color but I finally found them.

If they want to retire, let them.  If they want to play, let them.

The decision is up to Ged and Al, and I'm fine with whatever they want to do because I know they're decent human beings.  If they tour again, it'll be done with with class and with respect to Neil's memory, because that's the kind of people they are, and I'll be right there to buy a ticket.

Agreed except for the ticket part. I'd need to know A LOT more than what I know now. And since THEY don't know, it's going to be a while even if the clock is ticking.

  6. Kind of old news but I didn't see it here so..

Seems to be going as expected so far. A bit surprised that he says there wasn't much discussion about details before the decision was made so hopefully that will work out.  Seems to project the right kind of attitude about it at least.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Great evening in Cleveland (even though some of you booed the mentions of my city of Pittsburgh, the home of Neil's 1st show!!!!).

I picked up the 5-card baseball card set for the fun of it.  Seemed like a different kind of memento than the usual article of clothing.

$5 a card was bit on the high side for me but I thought it was a cool idea and it was well designed so I went for it. I really wanted an article of clothing (Take my money!) but the art was lacking.

  8. There was NO thought that 30 some years later there might be a demand to have this stuff. The music video format for most of that was no more than 75 minutes to 90 for decent quality video. It was edited for production and the rest was forgotten about maybe saved but not well preserved. This stuff was not considered like an Oscar worthy film, it was just music.  Who knew?  Anything that survived (like the Laura Secord footage (which was never filmed for release at that time) is just random luck.

If you listen to the bootlegs of the Darien Lake show on the VT tour, you'll hear a really high-pitched and obnoxious "WOO!" right smack in the middle of the pause at the emotional peak of Resist, when Ged and Al and the whole rest of the audience is dead silent.

That woo is 17 year old me, who was absolutely mortified by what he did and instantly regretted it. I'm sure everyone around me was annoyed, but now when I listen to that bootleg it makes me smile and remember how exciting it was to be at my first Rush show (and my first big rock concert too).

This reminds me of the time I was immortalized in the 6/2/90 Knickerbocker Albany video a few times when the guy who was filming randomly focused in on part our section at a few points including during War Paint. That really freaked me out the first time I watched that.

On Chapter 6 and it’s a fantastic read. I have th audible versions going and love it on my daily commute. Also bought the hardcover of course.

I am enjoying this better than any of Neil’s books.....actually far more.

I love Neil's style of writing. It's certainly a different style but I'm enjoying Geddy's style too. Interesting to compare the two.

Great book! I whipped right through it, even thought it was 500+ pages. In fact, I thought it seemed a little rushed at times. (No pun intended!)

Geddy did say that the editors chopped out a lot, maybe there will be an "expanded edition" in the future.

Also, it was neat that Geddy mentioned many of his musical influences. For example:

I'd love to see the 1200 page manuscript but there's a much chance of that happened as there is of hearing the 30 plus minute version of The Main Monkey Business!

Here's a photo someone posted of the New York march available-  not sure how it translates to your prices, but $90.00 for a hoodie is insane, 40.00 for a hat is pricey as well.    The rest kind of look like standard concert prices. Maybe there will be bootlegs in the parking lot!

I thought the apparel designs sucked but I got the baseball cards to go with the Vapor Trails baseballs I guess. Thought the litho was very well done and now I need to find a frame and somewhere to hang it.

Here's the found footage interview from 2005: https://bravewords.com/news/rush-producer-director-talks-about-upcoming-dvds

    - I know Doug Maher is not well liked by many in Rush fandom but why does anyone think this interview is "faked?"

    - I do expect, if Geddy even responds to me, that his answer will be that Anthem/Ole has a team that handles that, Alex is usually consulted about those things, blah, blah, blah. I mean, here's a guy that said Ben Mink found his two unreleased songs as if he totally forgot they existed. Haha. So, I don't have much hope of getting a satisfying answer.

Well, he insisted consistently (without evidence) in the years prior to that quote (maybe it's still available on the alt.music.rush internet archive if there is one.) that all of the footage not used in the those three videos was just sitting untouched in the vault. Then it shows up in that article years later about R30.

Since then there has not been ANY supporting evidence for this. Usually in cases like these you can find more than one reference. (Such as for when Different Stages was released there was supposed to be a video release but they ran into tech-syncing problems and it was later scrapped Some of this footage was eventually released on the R40 box in 2014.)

I want the rest of that footage as much as anyone and it doesn’t hurt to ask about it, but I’m pretty sure that “found the footage” article, which I remember well, was one of those Douglas Maher interviews that was faked.

Also, doesn’t hurt to try anyway, but I feel confident Geddy would just say “I don’t know anything about reissue plans, other people handle that.”

But hey, best of luck. I would kill for all

that cut footage from the three 80s concert videos if I could get it.

Edited to add: I always found it strange that holding off for Blu-ray (from that interview) to release a 100 minute concert shot on videotape made any sense.

Also, there has been NO supporting evidence since that time. NONE

Was curious about Geddy's friendship with Steve Shutt so I did a little searching and found a journal entry from Shutt

"I took my bass home and started practicing. I read my “Introduction to Bass Playing” book. I did scales and learned how to tune the bass. After a couple of weeks, I thought I was getting the hang of playing and sounding pretty good, so I went over to Geddy’s house to show him. When I got there, he had his bass out and one of those old portable record players where, when you opened it up, the speaker would be in the lid. I got out my bass out and said “Okay, let’s do some scales.” Geddy looked at me and said, “Um, I can’t do scales.” My confidence started to rise. “I’ll show you,” I told him. “Just follow me.” Maybe I did have some talent.

Geddy said, “Wait, before we do that, let’s listen to this record.” I told him that would be fine. The record started on the cheap portable player and he said, “Listen, can you hear the bass?” Then he said, “Look at this,” and started playing. His bass came alive. It pounded the speakers of the 12″ amp and sounded great. I didn’t know if he was copying the record or not because I couldn’t even hear the bass on the record. He did the same thing on the next song and the next one after that. I went home and put my bass away and I don’t think that I ever picked it up again. I guess, looking back, it would have been tough for anyone to compare with the best bass guitar player in the world. I think that both of us made the right decision."

Couldn't access the site but this was quoted in a Reddit thread a few months ago.  More interesting trivia

Guess it's trivia now but Steve Shutt and the Canadians were thanked in the liner notes for Moving Pictures. Always thought that was really cool.
