  1. Favorites: EARTHSHINE, Vapor Trail, Noctune

Filler: Stars look down, Sweet Miracle, Out of the Cradle.

Clearly this album was in desperate need of an external producer. Yeah, I know, I know, with Neil's fragile state, etc. really not only does the technical production suck (*the original recording, mix, master) but the songs themselves, arrangement and performance, would have been better served with a proactive outside input. Some arrangements are just rambling and lose the point. Some performances are just "meh". Somebody need to tell the band, "chop this verse" or "another take on that chorus in Sweet Miracle" or "you can come up with a better melody here or drum track there." "maybe cut back on the dozen or so backing vocal drones...." lol.

There were several tracks that I considered as "filler" but really, they just didn't live up to their potential. Freeze is an example; great parts, so creative. Love the odd time guitar and glorious chorus intro. Yet, the song just doesn't totally work; doesn't really reach it's potential. I think it has all the elements of a Rush epic. Yet, it is not a Rush epic.

  2. I went with:

fav: Subdivisions / Analog Kid / Digital Man (love the intense drum/bass interplay and the gorgeous guitar chords!)

    weakest: Countdown.

Tough to choose a weakest, as I still like Countdown. Love the subject matter, for sure. However, I always felt like the mix and choreography of the vocals vs. the NASA announcer kinda make a muddy mess at some points.

  3. Only ten, eh? Each and every Zep tune holds a memory and a place in my heart, but oK, I'll give it a shot:

    Ten Years Gone

    Achilles Last Stand

    Stairway to Heaven

    The Song Remains the Same

    Good Times Bad Times

    The Wanton Song

    Fool in the Rain

    Dazed and Confused (especially Live!)

    No Quarter

    The Rover

Damn, missed out on Trampled Underfoot, For Your Life, Over the Hills, Immigrant Song, Out on the Tiles, Kashmir, Nobody's Fault, Ramble On, When the Levee Breaks, etc. etc. etc.

  4. Frank Zappa.

I've been a fan since the 80's; mostly the Bozzio years, but also had Apostrophe/Overnight/Roxy and Elsewhere and then also Joe's Garage (with Vinnie.) I read the Real Frank Zappa book when it was released. I haven't listened alot in recent years, but this struck me recently. Listening to all sorts; and can't get enough

  5. my wife hates that I keep all my band T's. I literally have storage boxes full of them - all the way back to '82.... I guess I'm a Rock tour shirt hoarder. I'm proud to say that almost* all of them still fit me - though some are severely worn out. I've got Rush tour shirts from every tour back to P/G; in many cases, multiple shirts from a tour. then, I went back and bought shirts from each tour before that....at one point, my Aunt gave me an original Fly By Night tour shirt (in such poor condition that my mom must have thrown it away rather than let me take it to college!) Lots of Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, YES.. Some other classics that I remember wearing in high school: David Lee Roth (Eat 'em and Smile!), Iron Maiden, Metallica. I wore rock shirts basically every day of high school (fortunately I found a girlfriend that had a similar affliction!) Some other shirt memories from college: KING'S X (FHL and KX), Eric Johnson (opened for Rush on RtB tour), Primus, Queensryche, Living Colour, YES, lots of Dead tie-dies. Some from the later 90's: TOOL, umm, TOOL Since 2000, I am mostly outfitted in Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, OPETH, TOOL, John Wesley, Anathema, and, of course, the latest Rush... I wear them mostly when I am playing with my band!

  6. The Thrak box is curdling the parts of my brain that were functioning.

    Dribble.

The first time I saw King Crimson was on the Thrak double-trio tour. I had already been a fan of the classic stuff and the 80's stuff and the Thrak album was right up my alley. I was blown away. I recall a great review of the show I was at (Orlando; I see it is available for download!) which included the line: "Levin, grinding holes in my chest; Fripp, insane." lol.

I'll also never forget Adrian Belew coming out to perform a drum trio ("Prism") with Bill and Pat - all 3 on gong bass drums. They were like prog-taiko drummers.

  8. Most cross-over wide-stream acceptance? Pink Floyd

Most prog rock genre influence? King Crimson (with Genesis not far behind, but would also have to include Yes.) I don't see Floyd as just a prog-rock influence. They are bigger than that - but probably not as influential specifically within the prog-rock genre as any of the other three.

  9. I believe it was a different member of the road crew that had the drug issue. I think this is alluded to in the "Ghost Rider" book.

I never heard about Larry giving away the drums (he was indeed gone on the TFE tour!) but I know he gave me a pair of sticks off of Neil's set during the Cp tour!

larry was neil's tech on T4E, there's a quick mention of him and a shot of him on the work in progress video

You are correct! I got confused because Lorne also did work for the band on the TFE tour - but as a carpenter. I wonder when Larry sold/gave away the Cp kit then.... after TFE?

  11. They very clearly are my favorite. Pretty much the only band in my "top tier" that rises above the others (but I love them all!):

    Rush

    Led Zeppelin

    Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson

    Pink Floyd

    Yes

    King Crimson

my "Second tier" can be reasonably ordered:

    King's X

    TOOL

    Genesis

    Jethro Tull

    Opeth

    The Beatles

    Alice in Chains

    Peter Gabriel

    Jimi Hendrix

    Red Hot Chili Peppers

    Van Halen

    Marillion

    The Doors

    Grateful Dead

    The Who

    Kansas

    Anathema

    Dream Theater

This doesn't mean I listen to Rush all the time (or even very often anymore!) But I know every note they've played, I collect all sorts of Rush stuff, and have followed them for 35 years. They're the reason I'm a musician. They're the only thing I suppose anyone could say I'm fanatical about. Though at the same time, I can be critical of them - I just very much enjoy all of it; good and bad. It's all interesting.

  12. I went with Grunge - I love AIC, Soundgarden, PJ but I suppose this also comes down to defining the genres. Some would associate any 80's metal with "hair metal" and that would sweep in a whole lot of other bands that I liked. I hated the mainstream "hair" (Poison et al) but in a way, their presence probably allowed alot of other ,cooler, 80's metal bands exist. Perhaps even "thrash metal" and some "Prog metal" which I quite like. On the other hand "grunge" also inspired alot of crappy spin-off bands to exist too. So, who knows.
  13. 1. Wish you Were Here

    2. Dark Side of the Moon

    3. Animals

    4. Meddle

    5. The Wall

    6. The Final Cut

    7. The Division Bell

    8. Atom Heart Mother

    9. Obscured by Clouds

    10.Saucerful of Secrets

    11. Ummagumma

    12. Piper at the Gates of Dawn

    13. More

    14. A Momentary Lapse of Reason

    15. The Endless River

positions 1-7 would be albums I love

positions 8-12 would be albums I like

positions 13-14 would be albums that are too hit/miss for me

    position 15 is meh.

Favorite post-Floyd album: Amused to Death - one of my all-time favorites. I'm very much looking forward to Roger's new disc (May 19!!)

Pink Floyd concerts I've seen: Momentary Lapse of Reason (Syracuse, NY 1987), Division Bell (Tampa, FL 1993)

I've also seen Roger Water on two different tours.

  14. I guess I have to be careful with my choices because I am a fusion fan and could list several Mahavishnu, Return to Forever, Billy Cobham, Bruford, Chick Corea, Brand X, Dixie Dregs, Weather Report, etc. songs that rock harder than most "rock" bands

Also, "rock" bands that are primarily instrumental have too many great choices to narrow down my favorites (The Aristocrats, Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, Focus, Yngwie)

anyway, among "rock" bands that are primarily non-instrumental

1.) La Villa (on odd days), YYZ (on even days)

2.) King Crimson - "Level Five" (Monday, Wednesday, Fridays) Larks Tongues in Aspic II (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.) Larks Tongues I (Sundays.) Red (Every day), Fracture

3.) Allman Brothers - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (January - May), Jessica (June - December)

    Honorable mentions to:

Frank Zappa lots - maybe Peaches or Watermelon

Dream Theater - Dance of Eternity (an insane collection of time signatures!)

    Steven Wilson - Vermillioncore

ELO - Fire on High (always loved this jam)

ELP - Hoedown, Fanfare, Pictures at..

    ELQ (just kidding)

    Opeth - Ending Credits

Yes - Heart of the Sunrise (ok, it does have vocals among the incredible instrumental awesomeness)

  15. Metallica - not even close.

Don't get me wrong, I own, and really like, some Megadeth albums. However, back in the day, I loved Metallica (including Justice). I dropped off with the Black album, though I can appreciate where they were trying to go (horrible St Anger and all). I feel that last two albums have been somewhat re-invigorating.

Also, for me, one measure of a band is how much of a team effort they are. When I think of Rush, I hear three amazing musical personalities complimenting each other. When Ged did his solo album, it was very interesting and cool, but it most certainly was not Rush. Now, with Metallica, they have had a couple bass players (RIP Cliff), but I believe they have successfully re-inverted themselves. Today, Metallica is made up of very distinct musical personalities that continue to compliment each other and define the Metallica sound. As for Megadeth, who is even in the band now??!? Ellefson left and came back, so many other guitarists, drummers, I couldn't name them all! This is not a sign of a successful band. Mustaine has been successful because of his talent and drive, and Megadeth is his brand, but he has not built a successful band.
