I'm with Stoopid!
Surprised I didn't vote in this poll in 2009; was probably too difficult a choice to make. I love both bands. PT is among my "Top Tier" of 6 bands (Rush, Zep, Krimson, Floyd, Yes, PT/SW), Tool is very nearly in that top tier - a band I was an earlier adopter for (Undertow), have seen many times in concert, and totally in awe of the drums of Danny Carey (big influence in my drumming development). It's hard for me to define why Tool is not in my top tier - I think it is related to the sameness of vibe I get from Tool, whereas PT has a wider range of material. This could also be related to the limited output that Tool has had. Steven Wilson's excellent solo work and concerts keep the flame of PT alive for me too - whereas, Tool's more recent tours (I've seen two) are just sorta rehashing and going through motions to a degree.
Also, Stoopid, are you really sure that you can't find some angst-inducing things going on in the world to relate to? ha ha ha Seriously, sometimes I need Tool or something stronger to cope.

went with Madrigal (which is kinda ok), but would have chosen Rivendell except I love Tolkien and I laugh at the lyric:
Lying in the warm grassfeel the sun upon your, um, er, uh.... face
-
nearly impossible choice - both bands are in my "top tier" of 6 bands (Rush, Zep, Krimson, Yes, Floyd, PT/SW) I could see them as nearly equal in the 70's (Meddle through Animals and Fragile through Going for the One are full of world class albums), and even in the 80's (90125 vs. Momentary Lapse fairly close), but sadly I feel that Yes has somewhat trampled their heritage by continuing on with the name and several inferior releases. Thus, went with Floyd.
p.s. I've seen all 3 bands in this poll live (PF in 87 and 94, Yes in 87, 90, 94, 99, 04, 2011, ABWH in 89)

I'd love to have Steven Wilson's 5.1 mix.... However, I don't need all the other stuff (most of which I previously purchased multiple times in various re-mastered forms and all the way back to the original vinyl) and can't justify the $$$ just for the 5.1 mix. I'd be more than willing to shell out ~$25 for a stand-alone DVD of the 5.1, but otherwise, they will get $0.

Overall, I prefer The Beatles to The Rolling Stones on nearly every level. However, between these two songs, I prefer Gimme Shelter.

Not me. I saw Ian two weeks ago; the show was called "Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson". I'd consider myself a pretty serious Tull fan; since the early 80's and "Songs from the Wood" (SW 5.1 mix) spent time in heavy rotation earlier this year - but I never had the chance to see Tull live... Last Fall, I missed Martin Barre because my band had a gig.. anyway, I would have to say I was very disappointed. As others have pointed out, and a little research on youtube would have confirmed, Ian's voice is beyond fried. Wow. It is painfully obvious that he was struggling - not hitting any notes, pulling away from the microphone, changing phases (in the worst way), having recorded vocals (with cringe inducing synchronized videos), other band members singing, etc. It really just didn't cut it. His flute playing, However, was really good and entertaining. But this only slightly offset the abomination of vocal distress. The band - well, they were ok. But they really lacked the fire that I would hope for from JT. The drummer looked as if he might fall asleep at some point - give me Barrimore or Doane any day!! In the end, I guess I felt a little consolation in at least seeing Ian (albeit a dim shadow of his former talent) but overall, it was not good.

Filthiest in multiple ways - lyrically, and also one of the sickest 19/16 solo sections ever. lol. Vinne Colaiuta.
Pretty much everything on this album is filthy (to some degree). It is a filthy concept album!

I saw Eric open for Rush on the Roll The Bones Tour (I saw him in Pittsburgh; Mr. Big was on later shows of the tour, I believe.) I was a big fan of Ah Via Musicom before seeing the show; I actually bought a tour shirt (still have it!) However, I wasn't really into the stuff he put out after that - sorta adult contemporary. I'm considering this show in Orlando; I just bought tickets for the Dixie Dregs (one of my all-time favorite instrumental bands!)
-
Steven Wilson commented on his remix Facebook page; he explains the "Cygnus X2 eh" "New song" (it's not really a song but extended sound effects from the intro.) Still not worth $150 as far as I' concerned.
Earlier this year, I was asked by RUSH to remix their classic 1977 album "A Farewell to Kings" into 5.1 surround sound for its 40th anniversary, and it now appears on Blu-ray as part of a deluxe box set that also includes 3CDs and 4 vinyl LPs to be released on 1st December. The remix was done with feedback and final approval from Alex Lifeson. I also made stereo and 5.1 mixes of a 4 minute instrumental sequence found on the original tapes. This is basically a longer alternate version of the electronic music used at the start of Cygnus X-1, so not a new Rush song as such, more a piece of sound design, but hopefully interesting to hear if you're a fan of the album. Pre-ordering and full details of the contents of the set (which also includes a complete 1978 concert recording) can be found here - https://lnk.to/AFTK40th -
I guess this release is the natural result of Rush selling their catalog to Ole?
http://www.billboard...es-rush-catalog
My wife is amazed that as much of a Rush fanatic that I have been for ~35 years, and as much of a Steven Wilson fan (both of his work and his 5.1 remixes) that I'm not shelling out for the box. But I feel strongly about it - for my interest in this package, the value does not justify the cost. I suppose for some it might, but it got me thinking, being the one-time completest that I was (the R40 video re-package and 2112 Deluxe cured me of that!) If I'm not buying it, I wonder how many still are. I'd be really curious how many Super Deluxe packages they sell; I mean, more power to them, and good news to those that find sufficient value for the cost. But it crossed a line for me, and based on comments I've read here and elsewhere, it's crossed it for many others too.
Hopefully, they release the Bluray stand-alone someday (though I won't hold my breath, they still haven't released the Toronto TFE show from the R40 DVD box standalone.... yet.)

Dammit, if the Steven Wilson 5.1 mix had its own standalone release, I would get it in a heartbeat. But alas, it looks like it's on the boxset only.
Yeah, that's a major bummer. As much of a SW fanboy I am, and I love his 5.1 mixes, I just can't justify $149 for that. The complete 78 show is cool, but not $149 cool. I'm not interested in the vinyl other than as a collectible. Still can't tip the scale for the $.

I won't be going. I was a big fan back in the day - saw them on the Images and Words tour up through Scenes from a Memory (and then also on 6DoiT and ADToE). I've met Portnoy a few times; not to say that I'm not a fan of Mangini, as I have followed him through his career as well. But I just have so little interest in the new Dream Theater - no one could pay me to go see The Astonishing show. I know this is some sort of anniversary, but frankly, I don't think those songs would sound as good now, especially without Portnoy. I appreciate DT for what they've done, but just can't justify shelling out the dough to see this.

The album is a tremendous direction towards more concise songs. I will preface this by saying Hand Cannot Erase is easily my favorite album from his solo career and a top 3 now in all of his career including Porcupine Tree material. With To The Bone Steven is maturing even more as a song writer and looking to write great pop rock songs with his signature style and flair.
I love the direction of this album and it is a nice departure from his last two monster records.
Each listen I love it more and more and more. So many great sublime moments, and just when you think he is going to go off on a musical soundscape tangent....the song ends leaving you wanting more.
Maturity.
I am so looking forward to hopefully seeing him on tour again.
I'm with you on HCE being my favorite, but also really loving with tapestry of goodness that is To The Bone. HCE will be tough to unseat due to the deep concept, extended palette, and more muso moments. Ancestral live was just about the most intense moments in all his repertoire (including PT). The new album just has a great vibe - and taken as a whole, there is a cinematic quality to it. Hope to see him back in Florida too;

This thread got me searching for an article; didn't find it - but did find this:
http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/steven_wilson_of_porcupine_tree/
Songfacts: How do you compare the songwriting process of your solo work to Porcupine Tree?Steven: It's not different. All the Porcupine Tree songs started off as solo songs - me writing everything, demoing everything. It's just a different band that's recording them, that's all.
also, an interesting tidbit that I didn't recall. If the Deadwing film was made, the soundtrack would have been a solo album - including several PT songs and some recorded after (I wonder which?).
Songfacts: "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here"?Steven: That was based on a film script. There was a film script I wrote with a very good friend of mine named Mike Bennion who was making commercials, and he wanted to make a feature film. About 12 years ago, we sat down together to try and write something for him that he could direct as a first feature. I would describe it as a surrealist ghost story. I don't want to say too much more about it, because one day, I hope we might make it still.
But it was a surrealist ghost story, and the song "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here," well the title said it - it was about this idea of arriving at a point in your life that you never intended to arrive at, and I suppose having some perspective about that.
It was one of a bunch of songs I wrote for what would have been the film soundtrack, and it would have actually been my first solo record if it had happened. Because it was going to be the soundtrack to this movie that we never managed to get the financing for, unfortunately. But I wrote a bunch of songs that were all relating to the characters in this movie. "Lazarus" was another one. Some of them ended up being recorded by my band at the time, Porcupine Tree, and some of them I have recorded since in my solo career. But this whole group of songs were related to these characters in the movie script. It's difficult for me to talk about them too much without giving away the whole plot, but I can tell you that it was a story of this mother coming back from beyond the grave as a ghost to reclaim her son.
