  1. How are you determining what various drivers did with their right foot? And where did you learn that power oversteer is a reasonable object avoidance technique at half speed under yellow? If someone was spinning their rear wheels at that point, they were trying to fling dirt on someone. Bullshit. When you have to make a snap call to avoid a moving object, you do whatever you need to change the direction of the car.
  2. Exactly. I really don't respect the judgment of anyone who's reading more in to it than this.
  3. Tony Stewart was racing sprint cars in upstate NY saturday night, when he was involved in a wreck with another driver- Kevin Ward Jr. Ward exited his car, and walked down the track in order to express his displeasure at Stewart as he drove by. When Stewart drove by, Ward got too close, and Tony Stewart accelerated (presumably to change directions and avoid Ward), but ended up snapping sideways and running him over. Ward was pronounced dead on arrival at the local hospital. There's going to be a lot of people who think that Tony Stewart did this intentionally. I really can't believe that. What I could potentially believe is that Tony Stewart was doing something reckless like trying to rev the motor to scare Ward, or to throw a rooster tail (a spray of dirt) in his direction. But even so- I don't want to go there. Especially without significant convincing evidence. There's video of the incident out there, and I really don't care to post it. I watched it before I heard confirmation that Ward had died, and it does look bad for Stewart, but the fact of the matter is that racecar physics are complicated, and I have no evidence to suggest that Stewart was doing anything other than trying to avoid the guy. That being said, Ward had no business approaching the cars that closely, and in fact, the car in front of Stewart also had to swerve to avoid him. Whatever happens with Stewart, it's going to be a burden for him to bear for a long time. I don't believe that this will be pursued criminally, as I think it's foolish to assume anything more than a sad accident. And if this isn't pursued legally, I don't think NASCAR will pursue it as a sanctioning body. What I do hope to see is sanctioning bodies everywhere (NASCAR included) make a rule restricting the behavior of drivers who are outside of their racecar after a wreck. I've believed for a long time that, with recent advances to in-car safety, the next NASCAR fatality would not be someone in a car. I believe that the most dangerous place to be in NASCAR is on pit road, or among a safety/cleanup team. This is a reminder that, unlike the drivers who sit within 3400lb metal boxes, people on foot are unprotected and completely vulnerable. Just a shitty situation all around. I feel terrible for the victim and his family. I feel terrible for Tony Stewart. Awful, awful day for motorsports.

  5. Star Trek: Axanar has released their 21 minute "Prelude to Axanar", which will preceed the full 90 minute feature coming later this year. Their work so far has been amazing. While it's a bit darker than I'm used to from Trek, they still did an amazing job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guluduK1oqw
  6. I finally got a chance to see "Don't Legalize It"... and I enjoyed it quite a bit. By a wide margin their best movie. Best line in the movie: "He works for Kraft Dinner... and that's fairly inexpensive."
  7. Strangely, I've noticed an inverse correlation between the quality of racing, and the popularity of the sport. When NASCAR was a fledgling national sport in the 80s and 90s, racing was great. When NASCAR was riding high in popularity from 2001-2008, the racing quality was kind of poor. Now that the popularity is down again, the racing is getting better. Unfortunately, the points system is a disaster now. But yeah, win #90 for Jeff Gordon! Hell of a drive today. That pass on Kasey on the last restart was awesome. I just saw someone on Facebook make the point nicely, "Jeff Gordon has two wins and leads the points. Yeah... he's really washed up."
  8. I'm the last person in the world to turn his nose up at fast food... but I will not eat the swill that Taco Bell pumps out. YUCK.
  9. I used to agree with this. But lately Wendy's quality has gone downhill, while McDonald's has been on the rise.

  11. When I go Grouse hunting with my buddies, I'm always the only person who likes Spruce Grouse. Rough Grouse is great too, very similar to chicken; but Spruce Grouse has a gamier, almost juniper flavor... Everyone else hates it, but I love it. I'm always happy to take them off their hands.
  12. even with that ending huh? I love the ending.

  14. Just watched one of my all time favorites, a holiday classic, Independence Day. I really love everything about this movie. Great characters, including the finest fictional president in movie history; a compelling plot; a real sense of humanity at it's best- something hard to find in many movies these days; it's got action, suspense, drama, humor, heart... Just one of my favorite movies all around.

  16. Perhaps you should apply for the job. I'm sure Paramount Pictures would be happy to give you an interview. :) http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/400x/37919189.jpg
  17. My birthday present today was a trip aboard the Enterprise: Here I am in the engine room of Captain Picard's U.S.S. Enterprise-D: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img849/8140/wwaz.jpg And here I am in Jim Kirk's chair aboard the original U.S.S. Enterprise: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img850/3513/3oi7.jpg
  18. Thanks everyone. I appreciate the good vibes. :)
  19. The Birthday Boys Season 1 just got released onto Netflix if anyone wants to check them out!
  20. So good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZrJvvD_29k
  21. I found it interesting that the show ended with Molly's family watching Deal or No Deal. That seemed like a callback to Lester's first meeting with Malvo, where Malvo essentially asked 'deal or no deal' about the hit on Hess. In fact, it's a theme that recurred throughout the series.
  22. I can agree that, in general, the Trek movies are a little bit weak. It's much, much better as a TV show. Agreed. The only one that I enjoyed in the least was The Voyage Home. Corny and sociopolitical as it may have been, it reminded me most of the original series....... As far as the prime-ten go, I like the Voyage Home, and also The Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact and Insurrection. All solid. (Insurrection is despised by many, but I think it's actually the most true to the TNG-era feel) But the rest of them are pretty underwhelming. Star Trek's serial, episodic, parable of the week format is just much better suited to the small screen.
  23. I don't mind the DS9 finale, but it did lack closure. As for Nemesis, I couldn't agree more. That was hands down, the worst Star Trek movie.
  24. I can agree that, in general, the Trek movies are a little bit weak. It's much, much better as a TV show.
  25. The bad acting is at its worst in A New Hope. The story is worn out. And as for having parable or meaning, that's kind of all you have left when there's a weak story and bad acting. Don't get me wrong, I like 'plain fun' movies as much as the next guy. The 2010 reboot of the A Team left me with a huge dumb smile on my face. But you won't hear me promoting it as an all time great film. Star Wars isn't nearly as fun as the A Team was. Because with Star Wars, the acting was weak, the characters were uninspired, and it just leaves me bored. Oh, most definitely. Star Trek is on another level entirely, yet still has to compete against the 'sci'-fi opiate that is Star Wars. But it doesn't change the fact that Star Wars is a genuinely boring and uninteresting story.
