  1. I have no idea where the whole "Decay after 1976" stuff comes from. I thought he was still on top through the Hemispheres album. The tour is where his voice changed.
  2. Personally, here's my peaks for Geddy. Studio: Rush-Hemispheres Live: 1974 (Rush Tour) through 1978 (AFTK tour). While his voice was great on the Hemispheres album, the tour featured him losing his grit and power. Though his voice still sounded good afterwards, even today, it can't compare to the greatness of the '70s.
  3. This is also not talking about after Hemispheres tour, it's talking about the change with the Hemispheres tour.
  4. This thread's talking about his ability to sing the old stuff with his signature grit and power. I think it dissipated after the AFTK tour. Compare Different Stages disc 3 to the Black Forest boot, for example.
  5. I would have the line be the end of the Kings tour.
  6. I disagree. Listen to Cygnus X-1 from Different Stages, for example.
  7. The Bootlegs and dates are Anthem from Black Forest (5/28/1979) 2112 from A Passage to Oslo (5/22/1979) Cygnus X-1 from Different Stages (2/20/1978, why the Kings tour was his last one on top) Cygnus X-1 from Boston 79 (1/11/1979)
  8. As stated on an older thread, I said that Geddy Lee's live high singing started to go down with the Permanent Waves tour. However, After listening to many bootlegs, i think his voice started going down with the Hemispheres tour. Take this version of Anthem, for instance. Many higher parts are lowered or spoken around. Or this version of 2112. (Skip to around 1 hour and 10 minutes) He lowers lots of highs, and none of the highs have his signature grit and power. Most songs i've heard, he still hits the higher parts, but none with the power of the earlier years, or lowers them. Compare: In this version of Cygnus X-1, he still has the power and grit of before (This is my favorite version!), possibly even more so than earlier! This one (Skip to 40 minutes or so) he still hits much of the notes, but without any power. So what do you think? Did the Hemispheres tour mark a change? Or are there boots where he has his classic grit?
  9. I hate New World Man. Sounds like an awful copy of the Police, which i already hate.
  10. What Rush songs are your most underrated and overrated? For me: Underrated: None really. Overrated: Time Stand Still How about yours?
  11. I can't really sing along to early Rush songs like 2112, Closer To The Heart, and others, but i still love his voice. Another great moment, much more recent. "They call me the Working MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN" That sustain!
  12. Time Stand Still isn't much better than Tai Shan. If anything it might be worse.
  13. BUMP! Here's some of my favorite live moments. I like this Cygnus X-1 live version more than the studio version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzcdvQnafOY Same with this version of 2112. The climb at 1:30 :sundog:
  14. I really don't see anything high about his voice. http://www.youtube....h?v=-Tdu4uKSZ3M i don't see it either. I hear it. ;) Should have fixed it.
  15. I really don't see anything high about his voice. http://www.youtube....h?v=-Tdu4uKSZ3M
  16. Good call Lorraine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54H3EUAzpVg This guy makes Geddy sound like Barry White! Good call!
  17. Think about it this way. What if a song was sung in the third octave, but had some random A5 or B5 near the end? Would you say that song is higher than one sung entirely from C5-G5?
  18. You can't say 2112 is the highest when there is concrete proof his range peaks in Cygnus. If the question was "which song is the more difficult to sing," it would definitely be 2112, because parts of the song live in a super high register, whereas the peaks in Cygnus are more spread apart, or are just one note here and there. I don't think that this means what song has the highest note, just what song is his voice the highest overall.
  19. Honestly, I'd say 2112 is the highest. The only notes in Cygnus i need to dodge are "LIGHT of deneb" (F5) "HEART of Cygnus" (F5) "My ship can not resist HER long" (F#5) "GAINS CONTROL"(G5) "SEA UNENDING" (A5) and "TORN APART" (Bb5) In 2112, I have to dodge pretty much every high part in Temples, Presentation, and Soliloquy.
  20. Finally, the lows. Geddy's lowest studio note is a C2 in Double Agent, but it is spoken. His lowest sung studio note is a G#2 in Red Lenses. His lowest sung note overall is an E2 in the country version of The Spirit Of Radio (From Rash, the Real History Of Rush). As for the other nominees... The lowest note in The Trees in an A2. The lowest note in Distant Early Warning is an E3. The lowest note in Roll The Bones is an A2. The lowest note in Time Stand Still is a C#3. The lowest note in Resist is a Bb2. The lowest note in The Way The Wind Blows is a D3. The lowest note in Bravest Face is an E3. The lowest note in Neurotica is a D3. The lowest note in The Speed Of Love is a D3. The lowest note in Cut To The Chase is a B2. The lowest note in Ghost Of A Chance is a C#3. And the lowest note in Hemispheres is listed as a D3, but it is actually a C3. The song with the widest range is Fountain Of Lamneth, with A2-G5.
  21. As for highest notes on post Hemispheres albums... The highest note on Permanent Waves is a F5 in Freewill. The highest note on Moving Pictures is an E5 in Tom Sawyer and Vital Signs. The highest note on Signals is a B4 in The Analog Kid and Countdown. The highest note on Grace Under Pressure is a D5 in The Body Electric. The highest note on Power Windows is a D5 in Grand Designs. The highest note on Hold Your Fire is a C#5 in Lock And Key. The highest note on Presto is a D5 on Available Light. The highest note on Roll The Bones is an A4 on Face Up and Neurotica. The highest note on Counterparts is a C5 on Nobody's Hero. The highest note on Test For Echo is a C5 on Resist. The highest note on Vapor Trails is a C#5 on Out Of The Cradle and Secret Touch. The highest note on Snakes and Arrows is a C5 on Armor And Sword. And the highest note on Clockwork Angels is a C5 on Carnies.
  22. Huge NecroBump. Here is the definitive analysis. I am a user on a site called The Range Place (Named Queenfan11), which talks about vocal ranges. It features pages for many singers, that show their voice type, vocal range, and other info. Here is Geddy's page. http://therangeplace.forummotions.com/t3901-geddy-lee The highest studio note listed on the page is Bb5 from Cygnus X-1, though he hit B5 live on two occasions, once in Cygnus and once in Something For Nothing. As for the other songs people nominated: The highest note in Circumstances is D5 The highest note in Freewill is F5 The highest note in Available Light is D5 The highest note in The Necromancer is E5 The highest note in Fountain of Lamneth is G5 The highest note in Battle Scar is E5 The highest note in 2112 is G#5 The highest note in Marathon is C#5 The highest note in Anthem is A5 The highest note in Bastille Day is E5 The highest note in Finding My Way is A5 The highest note in By-Tor And The Snow Dog is G#5 The highest note in A Passage To Bangkok is E5 The highest note in Fly By Night is E5 The highest note in Lessons is G#5 The highest note in Vital Signs is E5 And the highest note in Lock and Key is C#5.
  23. No love for Roll The Bones? The main song isn't too bad, but the rap section... Easily one of the saddest moments in Rush history (Of course, Neil's tragedies are number 1) Time Stand Still is a close second. Just an awful cheese-fest with an even worse music video.
  24. I would say it wasn't that gradual. As said, very few 70s songs were kept beyond 1982 or so, and their melodies were altered heavily. On the Grace Under Pressure DVD: Closer To The Heart: Doesn't go for the C5s on BLACK-smith or PHILosphers and plowmen. D5 on Closer to the HEAAAART sounds flat. 2112: Original melody around D5-E5 lowered to around A4. Finding My Way: Lowers most of the chorus parts. In The Mood: Only goes for a few C5s.
