  1. Well each to their own Narpet! We all need our own viewpoint, and Hemispheres is still growing on me. Although its predecessor is possibly my favourite Rush album, I cannot having one without the other. Their are a few things about this album I dislike, but I couldn't change them (unlike Power Windows).

A year ago if you had asked me what I thought of Signals I would have said "not much", now its edging it close to my tol five, so yeah...right now I struggle with this album, but tomorrow I could play it and it will just click!

But right now, I stand by my opinion: I think Geddy Lee voice saw better days...and better albums! Though admittedly not many...this is likely in my top five:

    1) AFWTK

    2) 2112

    3) PeW

    4) GUP

    5) Clockwork Angels

Ok...so its my number seven...right after MP!

  2. Its a good album...but I am very happy they didn't continue with this style as I think by this point it was getting a bit repetitive. 2112 and A Farewell To Kings showed off the styles of this album to much better effect! I must say, though, that the second side of this album is perfection. I struggle greatly with the title track!

Oh, and Geddy's vocals are starting to get on my nerves...sorry...but he redeemed himself with the next release! He is just to shrill...

Will have to rate this as an 7.5/10. Near classic album, not quite up there with the bands best early masterpieces.

Here comes the old guy again... :codger: I couldn't disagree more about the "shrill" comment. That "shrill" was part of their stamp. It was only one of the many reasons I loved them back then and the establishment hated them. That "shrill" is a badge of honor in my book. It's one part, along with the music, that moves me emotionally when I listen to the early music. I can't even fathom it not being there and being all over those records. Nothing personal. Just my opinion :codger:

I do agree with this, what I mean is his voice is too extreme. The Temples of Syrinx features ridiculously shrill vocals, as does Xanadu...but nothing of the title track warms to my ears. It sounds like a case of taking a good idea a step to far...thankfully Rush are not ACDC, they know exactly when to stop and change gears! I think if they did just one more album like this the public would have deemed them a one trick pony, and fans would be getting bored. I love his voice. But it is the one thing that ruins the title track. I would have said the same thing if I had been a fan the day of this albums release!

However, as for the second side of this album...9/10...as close to perfection as the first side of 2112...if these had made ul just one entire album I reckon we would be talking about Rush- the band who outsold The Beatles...

  4. Permanent Waves and Grace Under Pressure come to mind as two mood settlers, but there are two occasions when I have sat and played A Farewell To Kings through to Moving Pictures and have been left intoxicated, as if I were in a trance and honestly, they mesmerize me!

  5. Is this the last tour? Will this next one really be the last? I am poor at the moment so I will never get the chance to see them!

And if I could pick a band, it would be Lacuna Coil. They have opened for bands like Opeth, Moonspell, Paradise Lost and a host of mainstream rock bands, as well as bands like System Of A Down, Motorhead, Megadeth, and Deftones. And they always fit!

Plus I love them, and I think it could be ace!

  6. I imagine that people who don't get rush look at me the way I look at the boss fans. I just don't get any aspect of it. I don't like his songs, music, lyrics, or anything about him. I was surprised to see that you're a big fan and from the uk. His big fans tend to be American I thought.

Well...my favourite band is Italian and I love Japanese anime...soo...I tend to look beyond british borders (plus I was born in South Africa, so im not a true brit anyway!)

Bruce is very american, which is fascinating to me, as I long to visit the USA!

  7. Darkness on the Edge of Town is gold. Pure gold. One of his best, and one of my favorite albums.

I'll say that there are plenty of times when the hype has been just that—hype—and I feel that, especially lately, the Springsteen bandwagon is far too crowded with hipsters, posers, etc., but at the end of the day, his best work can stand the test of time. There's certainly some stuff that isn't great or even good, but there's no denying his passion for music. When he makes good music, it's good.

    This!

I am not one of those ridiculous fans who proclaim that everything he touches is gold. After all, I struggle to listen to the whole of Nebraska in one sitting, and he has quite a few releases that, for him, are bland (Human Touch is almost 100% turd!).

But his best work makes him, for me, the greatest songwriter in my opinion.

(Btw does my endless gushing get annoying? I am so full of love for Bruce its pathetic! )

  8. I like that review! You know that moment when a band or singer you HATE finally releases something amazing, or does something you HAVE to respect? And you begrudgingly tell your friend who already worships them that you may have been wrong whilst still insisting "but they were always rubbish" whilst inwardly you are filled with doubt?

This review is exactly that! I can so tell the reviewer is annoyed by some newfound respect, and at present can only communicate with "buts" and "whateverz"...ANYTHING BUT ADMIT HE MAY HAVE BEEN WRONG!

Which gives me reason to believe that this time next year they may be given a cover!

What a hysterically human piece of writing!

(Provided you read between the lines).

And never has a surname been so appropriate. La Douche(bag) HAHAHAHA

I bet he is playing it all over again as we speak (and his hot girlfriend was already at the gig! )

This gets better each time I read it.

O my days...lol well at least I am good for something! I save my most in depth emotions, I bare my soul to the world...I express my passion for the sake of LOVE!!

    why?

To make a stupid Mountain giggle.

    Great.

  9. oh GOD I hate that man's music. well, let me rephrase- the E Street band are very talented, awesome.

His vocals.....like nails on a chalkboard. NEVER liked him. I hate his music so much lol. (at least I'm not like my husband- he only has to hear a split second of the music and he's like "MAKE IT F***IN STOP G**DAMN BRUCE!!!!!!!" I mean, he gets PISSED. lol.)

His vocals suck. Songwriting, not so great IMO.

    Terribly overrated.

I will admit to understanding your view on his music. I think his voice is love/hate thing. I love a lot of his stuff, but I ueed to find he E Street Band pulled me into a song, and Bruces voice would push me away! And his songwriting, especially his early years, is definitely all over the place. I get this hatred! Although it works for me, I can see where your coming from!

I was a fan for some time in the 80s and 90s then he turned far too political for my tastes. A shame too because I did enjoy what he released. I won't listen to a thing put out by him anymore.

Yes I agree...I still enjoy the music but the lyrics are a little to preachy for my tastes! Still...I can take his recent stuff in moderate doses. He is still far better than mkst acts half his age!

  10. I am not familiar with anything he has done after the eighties, but I liked him back then. I don't know if he has changed, but back then he was down to earth. You never knew when he would show up at a Jersey shore bar. and mingle with everyone. He had a very heavy New Jersey fan base (not surprising).

He is still a good recording artist, and I think he is far more approachable and accessible now than he was in the nineties (although I find the politics of the last album a little too preachy for my liking).

  11. Try The Rising...honestly its brilliant, and its a fine blend of different styles. Im not keen on all his slower stuff, but every album has its gems! In the last 13 years, he has only had one album that I would deem slow.

When you say first couple, which album are you referring to? A lot of people I speak to don't realise that Born To Run was his third release, as they thought it was his debut!

And for the record, I adore BTR, but the two that preceeded it (Greetings From Asbury Park and The Wild, The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle) and the one that came after (Darkness On The Edge Of Town) shine perhaps a little more brightly in my opinion!

    I love this man!

  12. His music is very much underappreciated. Born To Run, Born In The USA and much of The River is overexposed...rightly or wrongly...

It took a while for his work to grow on me. Although his fan base is huge, I think its possible he may have three times as many haters.

Either way, why is it so many Rush fans cannot stand him?

Was their some sort of rivalry or coldness between the two? Their respective genres don't really have a middle ground...so I would imagine they aren't to each others taste..but what about a lot of you (fellow) Rush fans?

  13. You must try Born In The USA acoustic! It wasn't intended to be this big anthem...and the lyrics are completely misunderstood...its not a patriotic "I love America" type song, and thats putting it mildly!

The Born In The USA album is an important Springsteen album, but perhaps not truly essential. It represents only a shadow of his musical achievements, which is okay as it brought him the much needed attention his genius deserves! In all honesty, I like it (but not overly much...).

  14. Nice!

I love so much of his stuff, I can look past the few bits and pieces I dislike without much fuss!

His first four albums are absolute masterpieces. I could not pick a favourite (but The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle could very likely be The One!). The boxset of rarities entitled Tracks is an amazing selection of songs, most more than worthy of an album release, the first two discs being fine examples of Bruce in his element!

The River, The Rising, Magic and the gorgeous double-album The Promise are further favourites! The latter is another selection of rarities and b-sides that had failed to make an album thirty years prior!

Too many beloved Bruce songs, but Thundercrack and New Your City Serenade are songs I come to regularly, as I do Jungleland and Roulette.

  15. I never heard of them until last year, and it was love at first sight! They rapidly became one of my all time favourite bands, and Fahrenheit, despite a few little flaws, remains a firm top ten favourite!
