  1. Don't even have to think twice about this.

    Xanadu.

If it came out today, it would still be magnificent because it is timeless. There are many albums and songs that came out in the late sixties and seventies that will never be dated for that fact.

    Xanadu is one of them.

Xanadu...never gets enough love from me, which now I come to think about it, is quite unforgivable!

  3. OK, so Segue Myles said he can barely listen to one Queen song in response to my current Queen marathon.

My belief is that our little Rush brother just needs a little education and inspiration.

So, I've decided, with your assistance, that we can introduce him properly to this band's great music by posting songs for his consideration.

I have decided to begin with a song from Queen drummer, Roger Taylor's solo album, "Strange Frontier".

A Cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Racing in the Street".

Couldn't resist it: I LOVE THE COVER OF RACING IN THE STREET!

All in all, I live in hope I might be proven wrong...

  4. I dislike Star Wars because I find it to be poorly acted, scripted, designed and the special effects don't even look good for its day.

The story is bland, the universe uninspired (honestly? Star Trek does this whole thing tonnes better), the score is over the top, and it made science fiction nerdy and childish, lacking any of the depth or intelligence of the finest works of the genre.

As a piece of entertainment? Fail. When it comes to these kinds of franchises, give me Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Die Hard or even Hunger Games any day of the week. Want quality science fiction? H.G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, Richard Matheson or Frank Herbert will suffice. Want great science fiction moviemaking? The list is endless, and this is not close to being even second tier.

this post is just ignorant. opinions aside, the special effects were ahead of anything else at the time (take a look at logan's run, another great movie released just a year before star wars, and see the difference in special effects), the universe is not uninspired (dragonlance is uninspired, forgotten realms is uninspired, TOTO is uninspired ;) but star wars is anything but) and it's one of the biggest and most varied universes out there, and science fiction did a good enough job making itself childish and nerdy in the 1930s, the 1940s, the 1950s...most of the genre before heinlein started writing big boy books was pretty juvenile. and as for frank herbert, dude wrote one good book (guess which one), and a lot of asimov's stuff, although fun and full of great ideas, reads like it was written by, well, george lucas.

I'm enjoying this thread but appreciate the posts where a case is made for why a movie is overrated instead of just "I hate _____". Just because you hate it doesn't mean it's overrated.

Star Wars is overrated because it combines a simplistic story, bad acting, no significant parable or meaning, and yet it still gets lauded as a masterpiece for some reason.

it's a classic story that's been used since the dawn of storytelling and will continue to be used, the bad acting is part of the charm (and doesn't really get cringe-worthy until the new ones), and as for having a significant parable or meaning, who cares?

is this just star trek fan bitterness from you guys?

And when all is said and done: I still hate Star Wars.

  5. I've always had a hard time believing that people who don't like star wars are anything other than contrarians.

segue is suspect because he'll be the first person to tell you that toto's better than hendrix, and KJ's favorite rush record is vapor trails!

it can't be a matter of opinion. it just can't be

    HENDRIX IS BETTER THAN TOTO.

And I am not a contrarian. I simply cannot stand Star Wars.

  6. I dislike Star Wars because I find it to be poorly acted, scripted, designed and the special effects don't even look good for its day.

  7. Their playing may not be quite as precise and tight as back in the 70s or 80s, but certainly not much worse. And EVERY musician gets worse to some degree with age, that's just natural.

I'm inclined to a good agree but consider these dudes.

Ever seen Les Paul play? Mel Torme? They were stroking it well into their lives

They better stop soon lest they go blind

:laughing guy: Or need hand surgery to fix the damage done..... :codger:

You think they'd have learned from your experience!

My unsolicited advice to all pubescent males out there is to become ambidextrous soonest....

Is that like as in learning to use for feet?

:laughing guy: I guess if you can. That might land you on America's Got Talent however.....

I am quite flexible...might have to apply!

  11. They seem to be playing better than ever. How are they a little bit "worse"? They are tight as hell. Don't get it...

I Have absolutely no issues with how they're playing, I hope they continue to tour. But you could argue that Alex and Neil aren't quite as good as they once were. I would agree that they are playing super tight lately

But saying they are not as good as thirty years ago still pretty much implies that they are better than 99% of other bands!

I'm curious as to why you think this is overrated (I actually don't disagree with your opinion).

The unbearably bleak, dark, and industrial setting.

How can you call a film overrated when the vey thing the film sets out to be is accomplished perfectly?

I am sorry Singin' In The Rain is overrated. It's the perfect musical!

Come on Mountain Buddy! Give us some more details!

A quiet man whose girlfriend gives birth to a mutant and leaves him with it.

I'd rather watch turtles mate. Much more interesting.

Me and you share the same opinion then!

  13. Yes they should be performing live.

If you disagree, then do not but tickets. Do not buy the live album/DVD. Play your favourite records. And shut up.

I hate this stupid thread. I would murder my mum for a chance to see them live! (Ok...maybe not...). For all of you who saw them first time round when they were young GOOD FOR YOU. As for young fans like myself, we make do with what we have AND APPRECIATE IT REGARDLESS OF THEIR AGE.

Why are Rush fans so friggin' critical of the live performances of men nearing their sixties in the fourth decade of their career?

    DUMB STUPID THREAD.

    Bollocks.

So they should all retire for the rest of their lives, avoid making the most of their still good health because a bunch of whingy fans cannot cope with the fact their heroes are no longer twenty seven years old? I suppose if Peart ever gets arthritis we will proclaim him a seriously disappointing live drummer, and as Geddy ages we should just proclaim his voice complete garbage and hail some younger rock wannabe the new hero around town as if 39 previous good years are equal to a mere flash in the pan.

    And if Lifeson starts...

    You get the picture.

They are having the time of their lives in the wake of a major resurgence of public interest in their music, and after an incredible album we still feel it is good to complain that they are to old to tour because, for goodness sake, they no longer perform like they did on All The Worlds A Stage.

Go shoot Joan Collins for not looking as attractive as she did thirty five years ago.

I don't think you could possibly have missed the point quite so spectacularly.

It's not about how old they are. It never was. Age simply isn't the issue.

It's about how bad they are playing live.

Please try to grasp that distinction.

They're not playing "bad" live. Worse? Sure, maybe a little bit

    Me miss the point?

    Neverrrr!
