Be careful when you quit a band!
the masked drummer replied to the masked drummer's topic in Making Modern Music
I'm leaving it all alone. I just got hired by a cover band for $100/show and they do at least one show per weekend. In order to sue me for slander, he would need to prove loss of revenue, and in order to prove that he needs to prove revenue earned previously. I'm sure his lawyer will discourage him to follow thru unless he wants to pay the IRS a cut for the last ten years of profits he didn't claim on his income taxes... -
Hey guys, I quit my band thursday and ever since, the manager has been trying to destroy my life. His gf hacked my facebook account, printed up some embarrasing emails about a forbidden relationship I had and mailed them out to people. He called the city where i live and is trying to get me evicted out of my new house which i paid cash for because i'm living in it while i'm bringing it up to code. He called my corner bikini bar and told the manager i've been taking pics of the girls (lie) to try to get me banned. He's sueing me for slander because he lied and posted a craigslist ad for a new drummer saying i was fired, and i retaliated by posting a reply to the ad stating the truth about why i quit the band, that I have been getting ripped off. He told us he was putting the money aside from live gigs for studio time when in fact he was just spending the money on buying... let's say "herbal remedies". I mentioned the band name so now I'm getting letters from lawyers. All this for a band I only got paid $40 over a period of a year and a half. So, be careful of who's band you join and watch out when you quit. There could be repercussions (no pun intended).

To me, the hottest Geddy was when he was standing close to the Rotisserie machine. lol

ZZ TOP PRODUCER SPILLS THE BEANS
the masked drummer replied to Brooks's topic in Making Modern Music
It's a good read for people who don't know what really goes on in studios, or how much work goes into it. Behind the scenes things are much, much different. It's been stated that beatles records drums were done by session players, but we don't really know if that's totally true, or true at all. On Kiss Alive (1975, Cobo Hall) they added an audience track recorded from a football game to enhance the perceived excitement. In the music business, there's a saying that goes something like this: "Reality is important, but perception is everything." I find stories like this very interesting. Thanks for sharing! -

QUOTE (jdouglas @ Mar 6 2010, 11:18 PM) They didn't even have to research average prices, they could have just bought this one two days earlier for $3550. If I see anyone post on the gibson forum with AL146 i'm gonna laugh my azz off at them. http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-Alex-Lifeson-ES...=item439d981936 It's sad what some people ask for when selling a used item. Sometimes I feel like posing as a buyer and terminate the sale at the one yard line just to aggravate them. Luckily for them I'm a nice guy... -

So Drumnut is unavailable for comment, I take it. I think I'm going to keep my 1980 slingerland deep shell maple kit and just downsize it. Thanks all! I posted this before, but this is my very last metal performance... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgXzDPVL5EQ -

QUOTE (Territorial_Game @ Mar 5 2010, 08:47 AM) I'm no drummer, just curious. What kind of country? The only thing I know at this point is it's a newly-formed country cover band called "Jack and Bill" with members of a Detroit prog-metal band I'm friends with and do shows with my band. (that is, until I quit my band last night over the mama drama at the band house. lol) -

QUOTE (Jack Aubrey @ Mar 5 2010, 07:33 AM) QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Mar 4 2010, 12:01 PM) I'm giving this new country cover band a shot and I'm considering keeping my drum set minimal. I was wondering what trf musicians think of these cocktail kits. The kick sound comes from hitting the bottom of a long floor tom, and there are snares on the top head so you can use the top as a snare. It sure would be nice to carry a small set like this after lugging around my double bass kit for the last couple years. So what do you think? "country sucks" is not an answer. I don't like country myself, for the most part, but I'm trying to broaden my horizons (and wallet). http://images.static.steveweissmusic.com/p...17189_large.jpg Drumnut has a cocktail kit and has used it in performance, so he'd be the man to ask. Thanks JA!!!! -

Thanks for the input. In my last band I just quit last night, we only played 45-minute balls-out metal sets, but in this band I will likely be playing all night, so I need to either sit up on a high throne or play my regular kit but scale it way back to a 3 or 4 piece. I played a gig once with only a floor, snare, bass , with minimal cymbals and it was fun (plus a lot easier than carrying my "truckload" of a kit I use now.) Thanks again! -

Have fun, RC!! Enjoy the inspiration when it hits you. It may not always be this easy to motivate yourself to practice. So practice hard! Push yourself and you'll get better and better. i a 42 and i've never been better. It's hard for me to get inspired unless I'm onstage in front of an audience, though...

Great job! I'll introduce myself next time i see you guys. My band's playing tonight at the ritz in warren for a wrif battle of the bands. I haven't played a weeknight gig in over ten years. this sux. lol -

It was remarkable how "Echoes" recreated the vocals of gilmour and waters. I was thoroughly impressed, especially some of the high notes the "waters" guy hit... -

QUOTE (rushfanNlv @ Feb 14 2010, 01:57 PM) Getting chills listening to The Great gig in the Sky as I type. Awesome. kewl. I was at best buy the other day, and while there, I saw a dvd for $9.99: "The Making of Dark Side of the Moon"! Shows Alan Parsons (the engineer) sitting at the mixing console with the original tapes loaded, showing how he used effects and stuff. How awesome is that? Richard Wright and the rest of the band were interviewed. I'm sure there's a thread on trf about it... -
Just saw these cats last night at the magic bag in Ferndale and they were absolutely amazing. They performed "The Wall" in it's entirety. They've got quite a laser and video production for a local band, plus their "Roger Waters" guy sounded like a cross between Roger Waters and Geddy Lee! I'm not affiliated with the band whatsoever, and I highly recommend these guys if you live in SE Michigan and are a Floyd fan. A+ http://www.pinkfloydtributeband.net/

QUOTE (CygnusX-1Bk2 @ Feb 5 2010, 04:56 PM) The MXL 990 is a surprisingly decent mic for what it is. There was an article on them in Tape Op magazine that was favorable after I had purchased the MXL 2001's as an impulse buy. I had used the 2001's as overheads on a project and they sounded good enough. The thing about the 990's is the design of the circuit, which is based on an older Scheops circuit. That circuit coupled with the medium sized diaphragm (not large as it claims) makes the 990 particularly good for what it is. I have used mine as overheads and as tom mics. I used them on some field recordings of weaponry and bullet/projectile impacts. They are cheap so they're a good mic not to worry too much about. There is a guy online who can do a modification on the mic for around $150 that will make it sound even better by replacing the existing electronic components with high quality parts, adjusting the diaphragm housing for optimal performance and replacing the windscreen. I think the price point on the 990s stock is around $70. A bargain for what it does. Awesome. Thanks for the info, as always sir. I tried home recording and backed off from it in lieu of going in to a studio when I need to, and let the people with the experience handle the details so I can concentrate on the drum parts I have to nail. I do occasional multitrack recording at home, but it's not done with much thought, equipment or preparation. Basically just plugging a vdrum kit into a zoom digital multitracker. Sounds OK. Acoustic drums are much more dynamic and harder to record correctly for a novice like me...

I've never tried those before. How do they sound?

Get In The Ring! BRUFORD VS. WHITE!
the masked drummer replied to RUSHHEAD666's topic in Music Of The Spheres
White is such an amazing talent, and probably a better all around, more versatile player, but I voted for BB. His risky style just blows me away. I'm sad to hear he's retired now, but he had a great career for his wild, unpredictable style. My favorite stuff he did was in the early/mid 80's with King Crimson, especially the 3 of a perfect pair tour hybrid kit. He will be appreciated by many young drummers for many years to come, I'm sure...
