  1. What's with The Smashing Pumpkins not getting a lot of love here? Between Siamese Dream and MC&IS, what other bands have put out two albums in a row with such diverse, yet accessible material that seemed familiar and yet completely new at the same time?
  2. Jethro Tull playing all of Thick as a Brick. Including the new version. People say Ged has lost his voice, man Ian Anderson is really awful, actually had a second singer there to help him out.
  3. Coheed & Cambria is the band Rush would have been if they had come up in the late 90s. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Gcik1ZMTDv8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  4. I just realized that the alarm on my phone has the ability to play any song on my phone. Now i get to wake up to a different Rush song every day. Makes the day so much easier to face.
  5. QUOTE (Leslie145 @ Jul 17 2012, 06:43 AM) I'd be happy enough if they left out Tom Sawyer and/or Limelight - not that they're bad songs (far from it), it's just they always play them - face it, after 30 odd years, even Rush must be getting a little tired of them by now If they were only to play 1 song from MP, I'd give a big thumbs up to Camera Eye, but hey, that's just my little wish & yes, they will play Tom Sawyer & Limelight (and yes, I will sing along in my usual lusty & unmusical fashion If RUSH were to somehow still be playing live shows for the next 30 years, i dont think they would ever get rid of Tom Sawyer. Neil has said how much of a challenge it is to play and that's why they enjoy playing it so much. It's also a song that, for me, evokes the spirit of RUSH as a group the best. Whenever i hear it, i feel like it's a part of me, and i dont think i will ever get tired of it.
  6. QUOTE (New Digital Man @ Jul 11 2012, 04:13 PM) QUOTE (lightyears @ Jul 11 2012, 12:33 PM) I only saw one mention of Carl Palmer here. How is that possible? Makes my head explode 90% of the time i hear him. Maybe because he's a one dimensional drummer who was quite popular with a small minority of people well over thirty years ago and has lived on his reputation of playing weird complex music that most people can't relate to and since the demise of ELP has resorted to entertaining about fifty people in pubs and clubs around the UK! And yes i do like ELP! Mayne people say RUSH plays weird complex music that people cant relate to. I also don't see how you can say he was one-dimensional.

  8. QUOTE (Two0neOneTwo @ Jun 28 2012, 04:06 PM) QUOTE (lightyears @ Jun 28 2012, 03:25 PM) This is my first post. I first got into Rush as a teenager (I'm in my mid-20s now), and i can remember the first time I heard the hits like TSOR, Limelight, 2112...i was struck by how easily Alex's playing fit with the song as a whole and how expressive his solos were, esp Limelight. To the point of this post, as a weekend guitarist for about 9 years, I've tried to play almost every Rush song. There's nothing like cranking out the opening riff to Limelight, or trying to master La Villa Strangiato. It's a great feeling, and I think it really speaks to Alex's ability to create memorable and melodic lines. That being said, while I enjoy and actively listen to their entire catalogue, i find that i rarely feel the urge to play any songs they've recorded in the last 15 years. IMO, Alex has drifted further from the more melodic lines he used to write. I think this also has to do with the general lack of crispness in his playing. Using space in a riff, and employing rhythm really help to create a specific mood for a song. So from my point of view as a guitarist, Alex's playing has been lacking this for some time. I really hope everything I've said doesn't get blown out of proportion. I love Rush and Alex is one of my favorite guitarists. Hey I hear yea. I feel the same. I propose a different viewpoint though. (A reason for the dis-like) You said 15 years. That brings us to Counter Parts , T4E , VT, SnA, and CA. I propose Alex HAS been playing his arse off and Has been steady but the recording industry has killed many of the "great" things about Rush. Won't go much further with this since there are already thread about this but I wanted you to know that the Boys IMO have never played better. Its the recording industry that has soured many of the important aspects that make Rush, "Rush". I have always said, Starting with CP it has gone downhill. That is pretty much when (Round 90-93) the recording industry thought it was a great Idea to begin its war on our ears. People, really take a look. There is a very interesting correlation between when a lot of Rush Fans (such as lightyears and myself) found Rush really fall off a cliff Sonically wise and the timing of the Loudness wars...... Dont mean to nitpick. But 15 years ago was 1997. One year after T4E. I completely agree with you that CP featured some fine playing.
