  1. QUOTE (Ghost of a Rider @ Jun 5 2012, 05:10 AM)
I refuse to listen to any leaks and in fact, I haven't listened to the two singles except when they played them in concert. And I wish they hadn't done that.

Call me old fashioned but I like to listen to an album for the first time in its proper sequence and hearing all the songs for the first time at the same time. For me, hearing the two singles before the album release would have diminished that experience somehow.

christ man, your patience is beyond superhuman ohmy.gif

    good luck to ya fella

    good luck to you

    yes.gif

personally, the last couple years wouldn't have been the same without bu2b in particular and caravan

sidenote: isnt the album version of bu2b like even freakin better???

Can it match the brand new MAROON 5 album though? unsure.gif

hey that maroon 5 guitarist is a serious rush head, i saw him on one of those mtv crib shows and his room was plastered with rush posters, had a powerwindows t-shirt on too i was well impressed smile.gif

Who voted SnA? Give me a break.

    biggrin.gif

    i voted VT

VT might have poor sound production but CA doesnt trump the quality of material yet

by the way, got the album version of caravan on right now..... is this beast or what smile.gif

  5. QUOTE (micgtr71 @ Jun 3 2012, 07:47 PM)
I said it before and I'll say it again...I am 41 and for 25 years I have been experiencing new Rush albums. Some have been better than others. Still, I think that it is fantastic that I can still experience this kind of anticipation. I am sure that I will like it. Maybe not as much as Hemispheres or Signals, but probably better than RTB.

    really good point.

i think people should bear in mind, how many bands, after 40 years, would have a huge fanbase in anticipation of something almost completely different every time round? i mean think about it......

this great band has consistently worked their imaginations to breaking point to give their fans something different with every album, like we expect it and wouldnt accept anything less, we've taken it for granted and we always will...

you know, i dont follow a whole lot of contemporary music these days, my era was like mid 70's-2000, and i can honestly say, from all the great bands i took seriously, like genesis hawkwind floyd radiohead and dozens others, none of em produced the sheer divergence of work that rush have......

it's incredible really, looking at a list of their albums the development and sheer breadth of undertaking has been mind boggling, even in their later years when these three guys might have a case for settling down into a niche

this new album shows promise, even though i myself agree with one or two negative points raised, we have to wait for the full album and take a while to digest it, but whatever happens it'll be different, god bless Rush.

Maybe it's just a style that Alex enjoys. Why must he do arpeggios because that's the kind of thing we like most? In the 80s a lot of fans complained because Lifeson's guitars were often merely accent points and shimmering textures and that they'd gotten away from riffing. Now he's riffing and people complain that that's all he does. biggrin.gif We should start a petition and outline the TYPES of styles that Lifeson should stick with to hold our attention.

see, those shimmering textures you so eloquently described, are what made Alex great for me.... like he wasnt just a guitar player, more like a master sound effects artist at times who happened to use a rock guitar

thats what made him Alex Lifeson of Rush

gimme more shimmering textures please keep the wah wah pedals smile.gif

  7. QUOTE (lonelymoon @ Jun 3 2012, 06:37 PM)
Like most of you, I am disappointed by the Italian clips, and I don't think it's realistic to hope that each song has a radically different surprise part that will make them great when we finally hear the whole thing. I really don't understand what Al is doing by just plodding away on power chords on EVERY tune. Joan Jett could play this stuff. He used to be such a creative, melodic guitarist with a deft touch and would always surprise you. Now he's Joan Jett. I have tix for Montreal in October, but I don't know if it would be enjoyable sit through all of CA to hear a bit of earlier, better material. I don't mind Ged's ongoing vocal style; I think some notes in the vocal lines are deliberately atonal for an eerie, unsettling effect. It's the fact that Al is just banging on boring power chords that makes this one really jump the shark for me.

    eh.gif

couldnt agree more, you put into words exactly how i'm feeling right now about those chords you mentioned..... i'm just hoping the full versions more creative and deft as you put it

  8. QUOTE (GUP1771 @ Jun 3 2012, 05:47 PM)

Hell, just to throw out there, it took me many listens for Rush's classics like 2112, Hemispheres, Xanadu, all of Moving Pictures (besides Limelight and Tom Sawyer) to warm up to them. It always takes me many listens to process the songs before I can like them. There's only been a few select songs that have made me go, "HOLY CRAP, I LOVE THIS!!!"

Rush is a band that surely requires an acquired taste, so I'll be giving it a try. Let's just hope that people give it a fair try, and don't go into this and convince themselves they already hate it. If people give a fair listen of the new material, and still decide it's not their cup of tea, no worries. It's all good. smile.gif

i'll certainly agree with the aquired taste thing for some rush tunes which is a big point to make, too many fans kinda automatically write a track off from the start and end up never giving it a chance.... for a couple days after release i thought bu2b was some of the worst stuff rush ever produced then the track kinda hit me like a brick and became one of my all-time favs

there's been a song or two like that on virtually every rush album over the past couple decades and they always turn out to be masterpieces smile.gif

heck, i remember back in the eighties the whole powerwindows album was too much for me at the time too much pop divergence going on shiny suits collar n ties etc didnt even rate mystic rhythms for chrissakes and i gave the band a break for a couple years.... which is unbelievable to me now as that album, along with all the eighties stuff, is simply awesome rush at their finest

good point though, rush really are that type of band where they can sometimes be a step or two too much ahead of you at the time being the great artists they are, and you yourself just need a little time to catch up

i mean, the very first time i heard AFTK and Hemispheres as a teen into Queen and ELO and ACDC and shit it was like really strange goofy stuff i thought id never be interested in..... a couple years later i was a disciple of the temples of syrinx smile.gif

just dont write off anything from clockwork angels for a while give it time to settle and sink in... the trolls with a natural need for negativity can do all the complaining bless em

  9. not a bass player myself but malignant narcissism sounds as if quite easy to start off with

    wink.gif

i remember as kids we all used to go ballistic over The Trees bass solo, i think id probably start with that actually

I'm a sucker for metal, unlike the majority of the old farts who just want Perm Waves part 2. Perhaps being a newer fan (1996) has it's merits. So glad i'm not grumpy and detest the new stuff.

tell ya what, i'm a serious nu rush kinda guy (who also deeply appreciates the vintage stuff by the way) but everything after moving pictures is sweet by me, however....

gimme Waves pt II any freakin time please smile.gif

I cant wait for the technology to come along where I can punch someone right through the internet.

gotta be the next internet big thing yes.gif

or even better, to have the ability to punch a hole in some douchbag's chest over the internet before ripping out their spleen and feeding it to your dog

that would be nice in this case wink.gif

  12. greyfriar i know its probably a matter of principle but you aint learning a whole lot by clicking those buttons, they just tempting little teaser trailers really, stop punishing yourself with self discipline and let it go for once
