Clementine, Book One by Tillie Walden. Seems like another tough one from one of the top graphic novel artists of today. I'm not the kind that has ever enjoyed or can watch horror films or series. This graphic novel, based loosely on the Walking Dead character Clementine, is beautifully illustrated (as the works by Walden tend to be). The walkers, too, are horribly beautiful. Since one of them attacked me in a nightmare I had after reading the first twenty pages of the book I had to reconsider my choice but then decided to see how Clementine's surviving. The story seems to have just enough layers to carry through the first book, but I'm not sure if I'm going to endure the anxiety that is present in that post-apocalypse setting, and foremost, the slow proceeding of the story. I'm not at all familiar with the Walking Dead world so I have no idea who Clementine is and how she's been portrayed in other WD products.

You are braver than me, don't think I could read those.  Other than a couple of Stephen King novels, I have not read much horror.  A big fraidy cat, moi.

  2. Saturday's game against Edmonton was fantastic.  Hard to believe this was the first time the Avs have played them this season.  It was a close game but one big thing that stood out to me was how many more blocked shots the Oilers had against the Avs, we were shelling Skinner.  But it remained tied at the end of the first.  Second is when the scoring started, had a penalty shot and a goal disallowed for kicking it in between both teams. Our deadline trade pickups were doing a great job, Walker almost had a hat trick.  Welcome back Lekhonen, this guy is a swiss army knife, can do it all. And with 0.2 seconds left scored the winning goal.   We always go to overtime against the Oilers, it's fun but nerve wracking too.

  4. I enjoy Bob Cesca, found his podcast a couple of years ago.  He is a big Rush fan and good friends with Donna Halper.  The majority of his stuff is political so it may not be everyone's cup of tea.  He talks to Donna at least 4 times a year.  She has been a professor for many years and is a very smart lady who I enjoy listening to.

Here's a link to the newest show with her on Valentine's day this year

I didn't know that if you pull the goalie in OT and get scored on, you lose the point you gained in regulation.

Me either, that was pretty gutsy of the Wild to do that the other night, big risk to lose your extra point.

Glad Avs didn't have to do that :pirate:

  7. Last night's game in Vancouver was a topsy turvy event.  Avs found themselves down 2-0 early in the game and when the Canucks scored again in the 2nd period, it looked like it wasn't their night.  Mikko scores a goal with 2 seconds left in the 2nd period, so there's a chance.  Avs come out hard and tie it up 3-3 in the third.  It was going to overtime but Vancouver hit the puck over the glass with time running out.  So Avs get a power play in OT and win it with a crazy bounce off Nichushkin's visor.   Crazy

  8. Avs start out slow against Calgary but made up for it with a 5 goal burst in the 2nd period. I can see why Avs got some extra bodies at the deadline rather than another goalie.  Had Lekhonen and Parise out with illness/injuries.  Just lost Logan O'Connor for the season (hip surgery).  The big line is scoring like a machine.  MacKinnon kept up his points and will pass his own scoring record with one more goal.  Nichushkin picked up where he left off, has helped the power play get back on track.  Mikko had 4 points last night as well.

Now tonight will be in Vancouver, this should be a big game.

He should've stayed in St. Louis. We only have Murray as the only good broadcaster in Chicago, and he's on radio with that John "five seconds late" Wiedeman.

I do miss Pat Foley, his voice was unique and loved his sense of humor.

If the Earth were flat, cats would have knocked everything off the Earth by now.

    Absolutely!

I don't know why he's there, but I hope he stays.    Much better than Pang.

I think he was just visiting, he's on NHL Network frequently so that's his steady job.  You don't like Pang?  Holy jumpin' really?  I think he's funny but can only take him in short (ha ha) segments.

  12. Overall I agree with these, I do like Madrigal (I named a cat after it :coy:).  Chemistry I didn't like at first but have come to enjoy it.  Roll the Bones is fun and I like the percussion in High Water.  I am a Vapor trails fan so I don't mind Stars look down however I skip Sweet Miracle most of the time.  BU2B so many pan it   I just see it as a segue into the next song.

Superconductor is the most cringe worthy song for me.

    Thanks Rita, try this one:

Wow, that was fast and funky.  Some good players, know Jamie Glaser on guitar (heard him with JLP) and Marcus Miller on bass.  Didn't really hear the background vocals  Chaka Khan and Diane Reeves would be quite the team.  Thanks for sharing

  14. This trade deadline is just crazy.  AVS got Middlestadt from Buffalo but lose Byram to them. (Backstory Byram probably asked to be traded, he and Dylan Cousins were team mates in juniors). Avs need another center so let's hope he pans out.  Then Johanson goes to Philly for Walker, and 2 more guys who I have no idea why they got them

Guentzel did get moved to the Canes, rumors are Sullivan will be gone at the end of the season.  A couple more hours left, it will be interesting to see who gets who in the last hours.

Jane Eyre was good, but not great.  The writing is a little too purple for me, and the drama lacks some depth, the author puts very similar speech and speech patterns into different characters (e.g., two different people will describe one thing in exactly the same way), and at least 3 characters have superhuman observation skills which would make them unbeatable at a poker game.  Having said that, I largely enjoyed the story and the writing, and look forward to my inevitable trip to visit and revisit the Brontes and Austen.

But before that, I think I’m going to go for either When Christmas Comes or Alice in Wonderland.  But I won’t know until I fire up my kindle again in a day or two.  I also want to read Paradise Lost, The Road, All the King’s Men, and A Secret History of Christianity.

I didn't like Jane Eyre the first time I read it  but after multiple readings, I have come to like it a lot.  Jane is really a strong person in such a harsh world and it was easy to root for her.  I don't know if you like re-tellings but I found a fun series years ago called the Eyre Affair.  It is set in a time where people can actually interact with characters from literature.  Thursday Next is a Lit Detective and through a complicated set of events, Rochester appears to her and asks her to help him get Jane back from a kidnapper.  It is so clever and funny with lots of inventive ideas and inside jokes.  I started laughing from the first page on.

12" plus of new snow dumped last night.  After 2 hours of shoveling* the wife and I had a great snow shoe hike in the early sun with the dog.  I love a bluebird morning after a big storm!

How are you holding up with all the snow dumps in the last 10 days?   It's been weird here.  First unseasonably warm about 10 days ago 60's.  Then lots of rain in the valley, snow piling up in the mountains  (avalanches galore).  To the first of this week, crazy winds.  Some areas by the GSL had 65 mph, we got 35 mph and seeing yard furniture blowing down the street.  Now we are back to warm again, puddles.

It's like the old saying, wait 10 minutes and the weather will change....boy howdy.

Avalanche 5 Hawks 0  Richardson making jokes about the Hawks winless streak on the road. And he's got arm tattoos. Why isn't this guy fired yet? 15-42-5

Avs keep their winning home record going.  MacKinnon is now tied again with Kucherov for the scoring lead.  Happy Cale got a goal, he'd had a dry spell.  And that stop on Bedard,  way to go Annunen!   Sorry, didn't mean to rub it in.... After that awful loss in Nashville Saturday this was much better to watch.

I've come a long way in how I see tattoos.  I used to think they were really dumb and even low-class, but I've mellowed quite a bit.  Some of the artwork that I've seen is really good.  I don't give anyone any grief about tattoos.

Face piercings, on the other hand.....

I don't give them grief, I just don't get covering yourself in ink that will degrade and look bad.
