  1. Thanks again to all who posted good wishes (and to those who relayed derision from the Old Grey Birdcage Liner...)

Arthritis in the scrolling finger has taken its toll, goose.   At least I can still legibly sign my social security checks.

Boy, these Toilet Bowl games are foul.  Roofclaim.com bowl last night:  USF 45, Syracuse 0.

Just call them what they are, exhibition games.   These have to either be the easiest games in the world to bet or the hardest, team quality means virtually nothing, motivation is everything.

Relevant to MLB, as well, but is it time to rethink the value of winning a division? Some of them are quite weak, relatively, and while that changes over the years, maybe we just put all the teams into a pot and seed them 1-7? Looking at the standings Treeduck posted, all that would change at the moment is reversing the home field for the Eagles-Bucs, but maybe that's how it should be?

Interesting idea, but while the financial structure of baseball lends itself to large, ongoing and reasonably geographically ingrained advantages for certain teams, the same is not true for football, so these things should work themselves out over time, rather than recurring to the advantage of the same teams. I would have less trouble with it in football than baseball for that reason.

If it does work that way though it should be in conjunction with evening out the schedules in any given year, which would reduce the games between traditional rivals, which I don't like, so after all is said and done, I'm ok with the only occasional "unfair" anomalies that result at present.  I would support HFA for the team with the better record.

The Committee responded to questions about their selections by saying they are confident they selected the four best teams.  This in spite of Florida State going undefeated.  I'm curious, based on their system, where being judged better is more important than actually winning, if a lower-ranked lesser team upsets a higher ranked better team in the playoff, do they still advance to the final?

Depends on whether they play in the SEC.

Seahawks pull it out with a 4th quarter comeback vs the Eagles.  Game ball goes to the offensive penalty that kept Seattle from stupidly going for it on 4th and two and passing on the guaranteed 3 points, which was the winning differential.

    Analytics, lol.

You mean the sack that made it 4th and 8?

The 3rd string QB is part of the criteria for placement determination.  Much to FSU's disadvantage.

If by "much to FSU's disadvantage" you mean "much to ESPN's/the committee's relief'", then yeah.

PJ continues:  "There is talk 2nd string QB Tate Rodemaker will be sufficiently healed to play.  Though I doubt his availability, or lack therof, made any difference."

Not as long as ESPN is pulling the strings.

Sorry I botched the quote string as badly as the committee botched their job.

"Figures often beguile me," Twain wrote, "particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: 'There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

    - Twain

Statistics, like words, can be used to advance lies or truths.  Maybe players, managers, and front offices should stop talking, too.

Just now reading about his career and he was good. Starting with Mr. Basketball in Indiana and ending up in the NBA. I found it interesting/stupid that when he was in college, he and every other freshman, weren't allowed to play in games per NCAA rules. RIP

In Lew Alcindor's freshman year, he led the freshman team to a huge win over the varsity (the rule above was in effect) in a preseason scrimmage. If the rule was not in effect, a) UCLA would have likely won 11 championships in a row, and b) the all black Texas Western team likely wouldn't have beaten lily white Kentucky in the championship game that year and that wonderful story would likely never have happened.  So I guess some good could have come from what I think is a stupid rule.

  9. Chicago Cubs: world series in 2016, no WS appearances and several collapses in the other 53 years I've been a fan

Miami Dolphins, no Super Bowl wins since 1973,_no appearances since 1984, no post season wins since 2001, and we're losing to the fing Raiders at home

Indiana Hoosiers, championships in 1976, 1981, and 1987, but no Final Four or even Elite Eights since 2002.

    Grade:  F

No offense but I will never understand people who are members of a forum dedicated to some particular passion and they insist on making clear they how bored and uninterested they are all the time. It's not enough to ignore what they don't care about, they want people to know that they're dismissive about it. There's a guy on a football board that I follow and most of his contributions are things like "I wouldn't go back for a game if I had a free ticket" and such. Every win is met with silence and every loss is met with bitter mockery by this person who claims to be a long-time fan and says he went to this university.

There are a million things I don't care about, but I don't spend my time on those forums interacting with people who do care. It just seems like a such a waste of time if you're that jaded. I mean, wouldn't a person rather be on a forum about some topic where they can say "Wow, I didn't even know about this but I'll check it out!" instead? But hey, whatever people choose to do with their own time is fine..

Maybe if in the audio version Geddy threw in a few glottal stops he'd change his mind.

  11. I'm a Yankee, Laker, Cowboy and Duke basketball and Alabama football fan.  Life is pretty good, I'd give my experience an A.  When we win, which hasn't happened all that much lately, I rub it in to all of those loyal shrubs who root for their home teams.  When we lose, which for the Yankees and especially the Cowboys is quite a bit lately, I shout things like "27!", "America's Team" and "You're just jealous of us" at those loser fans from other teams.

Cause I'm a winner, just like my teams...

Burrow out for the season, Bills playing like crap, Raiders, Chargers and Broncos are still the Raiders, Chargers and Broncos.  Not looking past any games, but things are looking good for the Chiefs in terms of not just making the post-season but going deep.

But isn't Taylor Swift still on tour?
