These guys are among my favorite bands, and I've been listening to a lot of their music recently. They have amazing chops, play with time signatures in ways that benefit the songs, can jam with the best of the them, and write wonderfully accessible and complicated music.

So, does anyone here know them? Anyone like them? Am I alone?

Here is one of my favorite songs (though it is much better live). It's slow and starts with a very somber guitar solo, so you might want to start at 2:30 for when it picks up a little tempo or 3:15 to hear the song-proper begin:

And the following is a concert they did a couple years ago at Bob Weir's studio. The first 3 songs are a good intro to the early sound of the band (though played by old people, now).

I saw them open for the Black Crowes a couple of times, during the first leg of a tour in the fall of 1996. I thought they were good, but I never got into them any further after that. I didn't know they were still active, honestly.

They stopped in 1999, but have been doing reunions from time to time in the NYC area.

You unfortunately saw them in support of their worst album, Red. Their other 3 studio releases are much stronger, especially $1.99 Romances. I also saw them in '96 and I wasn't that impressed, despite the fact that I loved their first two albums and was already a big fan. Their earlier shows were much better, and their later ones were a bit better, largely due to setlist changes. Their 1994 album, which was amazing, wasn't promoted by their record company at all, and they switched in 1995. The new company pushed them to be more pop-oriented, and the result was just ok. Unfortunately, that was the album that was promoted most.
