zappafrank
I know that aside from the Rutsey days, Rush infamously doesn't have any leftover material to release to the masses (aside from stuff like the Power Windows demos which have leaked), so this isn't about unreleased material. The question that occurred to me the other day was: does anyone know what the longest amount of time has been b/w the band having either a song or the basis of a song and them actually recording it? For example, the main synth riff in Tom Sawyer was something that Geddy came up with during soundchecks on the PeW tour, right? So something like that gets at the idea, but obviously not in the sense of them holding onto it for a while, since it was used right away for the next album. Think of artists like Zappa or The Grateful Dead who had songs that they either had for years in the vault or even played for years live before finally doing a studio recording of some kind. Obviously the public will not have heard any unused substantive Rush ideas since they say there aren't any, but when they did have something more concrete than not, did they work it out for the next album, or did they ever hold onto something for years before finally getting it the way they wanted?
