boz69
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The NFL announced on Monday an expanded prime-time slate for its opening week starting with a Thursday night September 7 game featuring the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. It will be followed by a Sunday night Manning-Bowl clash and a Monday Night Football doubleheader. Pittsburgh will host the Miami Dolphins to kick off the 2006 season and capping a full program of Sunday games will be a night tilt between the Peyton Manning-led Indianapolis Colts and the New York Giants, quarterbacked by younger brother Eli. Monday night will have a prime-time twin bill, opening with the Washington Redskins hosting the Minnesota Vikings at 7 p.m., followed by San Diego Chargers at the Oakland Raiders with a 10:15 p.m. kickoff. Teams will be playing this season with official balls inscribed as "The Duke," in honor of the late New York Giants owner Wellington Mara, the league said. He died last October aged 89. Mara, son of one of the founding fathers of the NFL, was named Wellington after the Duke of Wellington and was given the nickname "The Duke" as a youngster by Giants players. The league also announced a Thanksgiving Day triple header. The Detroit Lions host the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs entertain the Denver Broncos, one after another on Thursday, November 23.
