  1. I was listening to Sabbath , Bloody Sabbath, followed by Life's Rich Pageant earlier today. The Sabbath album (with it's odd production/mixing) had me listening very openly and very closely to what was going on, and then that listening carried over into the R.E.M. album which I finally realized is great all around and I love as a result. I saw in two separate documentaries a core similarity between the bands. In one on Sabbath, their music was described as "99% from the gut, and maybe 1% was thought about, but not for very long," and in the R.E.M. doc, I learned the band rarely contemplated their musical choices, they just let things happen very naturally and organically, to the point that it was taboo to question their choices in the studio (especially Stipe's lyrical choices). Suddenly the two bands are both coming from the same place in my ears, and I love them both more for it, so here we are, Begin The Begin... R.E.M. or Black Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath?
