On Everyday they over produced their music and tried to wrote “hit songs"......as an earlier post said it did not age well. Busted Stuff was a dark record and was supposed to the album they released instead of Everyday. Steve Lillywhite (yeah the guy who sold out Rush before Grace Under Pressure was recorded) was their producer on that and the previous threes albums. I have a bootleg of Busted Stuff called the Littlywhite sessions.

 

They just started sounding way to the same after those first 4 albums......and the live shows started to annoy me with the bohemian crowd who followed them everywhere....did not shower and would try and steal your seats constantly. It was ridiculous......also they would play 8-9 songs in 2.5 hours. They would just jam and jam and jam....and more jamming and more solos......yeah....not my kind of thing. It got old quick. 

 

Jumped ship in 2007 as a supporter. 

 

I still will listen to those first 4 albums......also love some of his live stuff as well from those early tours. The Live from Central Park CD is amazing.

I was in the same boat as well.  The first few albums were great, they had a great live show,  and Carter's playing was phenomenal!  When the bass player passed away, and then the violinist got weird, they fell out of my rotation. I still pull some of the older stuff and some bootlegs out occasionally, but not into them anymore.

Not really a distilled spirits drinker by any stretch, but that's why I just grab the small bottle, and have one for him every year.

Just curious about what the rest of you do.

In 1976, I was at a friends house, and he was one of those guys that was always saying "Wow, you need to hear this"!  Put an album track on and freak out, then say "whoa, here's another one"!  And play like 30 seconds of a tune, not giving you enough time to just get into it.  So one night, I was there, and he goes "wait...you're a drummer, right?  You need to hear this guy!"  So it was like less than a week after All The World's a Stage came out, and he drops the needle on Working man and says " there's a drum solo at the end of this, and you're going to be amazed"! 

 

So he actually let the entire tune play, and go into the drum solo, and I was TOTALLY blown away since up until that point, I've NEVER heard anything so wild!! he told me who the band was, and when I got home that night I grabbed the Columbia House catalog, and FOUND ATWAS and Caress of Steel in their albums, so I asked my mother to order them, and she did.  When they came I think I listened to ATWAS like 10-15 times, before I put Caress on, and was totally hooked! SO in three years, I'll be a fan for 50 years! 

 

Archives was the next album I got, then when A Farewell to Kings came out, I got the new one the day it was released! 

Only saw two opening acts... the first one was Y&T on the GuP tour, and they were pretty wild! Had some great stuff. The next time it was SUPPOSED to be Blue Oyster Cult, but I think someone in the band was ill, and they didn't play. On the Hold Your Fire tour it was Tommy Shaw... When he played Styx tunes, everyone was happy, but when he played one of his solo tunes, they booed the living sh*t out of him! You'd think after the second or third one, he would have just stuck to the Styx stuff...

Other than the odd song, I think that Power Windows through Test for Echo was a period where I wasn't as enthusiastic about their album releases. (other than Counterparts)

 

There were tunes on each of those albums that were over the top (In fact Dreamline is probably one of my favorites to hear live) but on the whole, not great releases.

 

Counterparts was the exception because they seemed to get back into a "trio" sort of vibe!

The 'whip cracking noise' is a 1/4" piece of plywood being enthusiastically smacked upon a wooden stool (with a flavourful dash of reverb). The assertion of wind chimes being attached to said plywood is a case of somebody misremembering a wee bit.

 

Yeah, I read somewhere the exact same thing.

I'm still hoping for a Moving Pictures anniversary set, hopefully coinciding with an Exit...Stage Left FULL concert version live part! (And hopefully mixed as a live album, not what they attempted with the original release)

 

I still have a tough time listening to ESL.. I have bootlegs from that tour that sound better than that!

Guys, they're going to do a real box set closer to the holidays. It's fine.

I wasn't a fan of Limelight as an opener. It's just not that type of song

 

Nah...Spirit of Radio was probably the best opener!

 

 

The one thing I DID love about these guys live was that they never really did the same setlist from one year to the next!

 

From the time they came back on the Vapor Trails Tour, they really mixed it up from tour to tour! When they got to R30, I was a little disappointed that they didn't open the second set with another "overture". The first set was great because I never got to hear any off Bastille Day live, so.....

I guess the better question for THIS forum, is when are they going to release a 40th anniversary version of MP? (With an entire concert in better quality than Exit...Stage left)

 

I still can't believe that they don't have alternate mixes of songs... I GET that they used everything in once way or another, but there has to be tape of the earlier mixes, and stuff (i.e. Sir Gawain before they scrapped it)

Yeah, had I known that I would have tried to get to MORE shows. My friend and I went to Bristow, VA since it was on a weekend and easier to get to from a "work" standpoint.... we both figured that there would be a second leg, and that we'd probably get another shot or two, but sadly that didn't happen! Kicking myself for not going to Philly

I was looking for something else on Amazon, and found a cd called Rockabye baby Lullaby versions of Rush songs....

 

It's cute, but as one of the reviewers said, after the first few it gets old...

I have a question to y'all: you buy cds, vinyl or both? I like cds the most cuz there's more of a clear sound and you can play it in your car :haz: oh and they are cheaper... I am poor... never could attend a concert :(

 

At first it was just vinyl. I think the first CD I got was Hold your Fire.

 

For the most part I would buy the LP and usually ran a cassette on the first pass so I had something to hear in my car. Late in 1988 I bought a car that had a CD player in it, and didn't need to make tapes anymore!! it was great going to the record store, buying a CD, then just popping it in the deck!!

 

All I buy is CD's anymore....

Hmmm... I'll make it easy...

7: First Rush Bootleg That Blew You Away?

someone like yourself who has been a fan from way early on - was that the first Rush boot you saw too? I think the first Rush boot ever pressed was the Montreal 1978 record with the bad fan art, but am curious as to which other ones came after that. Back in the early 80's when I first started looking to collect boots - rush ones were rare

Back in the late '70s / early '80s Rush bootlegs were not readily available here. I got the St. Louis show in the late '80s ..... It was a double vinyl and I think it was just called Xanadu (I no longer have any of my old vinyl stuff).

I have only really been gathering Rush shows in earnest in more recent years (last 20 odd years) pretty much because of a) the advent of CD, b) more availability via the internet and c) logistically being unable to get to a lot of concerts in person in the 80s/90s.

Looking back now, it's easy to see why many people were turned off by bootlegs - generally crappy vinyl pressings, a plain white sleeve or poor quality printed image, and more crucially awful sound quality.

Nowadays the quality is light-years better (although there are still awful sounding ones about). I tend now only to look for soundboards. Some of these IMO sound better than the official live releases.

Also what i like nowadays is the emphasis on free trading .... made by the fans, for the fans .... I remember way back shelling out maybe 4 times as much money for a bootleg compared to the going rate

for official albums .... only to find it was totally crap!! ... I seem to recall having a couple of Deep Purple and Zeppelin boots which were particularly bad!!

 

No, not really... The first bootlegs I ever had were Led Zeppelin, that I got when a friend found someones cassette box in a parking lot...it had a 1969 show, some odds and ends from other tours, and an out takes compilation. My first Rush Bootleg was a cassette of a Permanent Waves show (from LP) that was pretty much incomplete, but it was cool to hear.

 

Once I found ways other than the odd show in music stores that sold them, it was out of hand!

Cygnus Gold Edition (because it was the first time I got to hear Cygnus X-1 and Hemispheres live in any way, shape or form)

My wife works at a hospital, and it's easier for me to drop her off and pick her up due to where the parking is. So every day I get a text that she's almost ready, so I drive the two miles, park in front of one of the entrances, and listen to my music, and play my "wordscapes" game. Today's selection was Snakes and Arrows, and Armour and Sword came on.

 

I happened to be parked in front of the Children's hospital entrance, which is just up from the Cancer Institute's entrance. As the song is playing, I notice a little girl walk out with very thin hair just as the line "No one gets to their Heaven without a fight" and just totally lost it! about two minutes later, another little one came out completely bald.

 

I LOVE that song to begin with, but I've never had such a poignant revelation while listening to a song.

 

Talk about a moment!

I was a little surprised that we haven't had anything pre-2112 yet... You'd think that there would be SOME live odds and ends in the vaults?

Going back to the four studio, one live album days, I ALWAYS thought that the third album in each series was the most unique!

Did they always skip the Apollo/Dionysus sections when they played Hemispheres live?

They played the whole thing when I saw them on the Hemispheres Tours.

 

Which is what bugs me about them not releasing a Hemispheres show for that one!

Can't find any! This store closure came at a horrible time to get anything like that. Every place I've checked online where I could get it doesn't have it. Ebay doesn't even have any for a ridiculous price.

I'm just curious that there's nothing on the official site yet?
